CHAPTER RELATED SCENARIO Acting as 22nd President of the United States, we need YOU, Grover Cleveland to decide on how the United States shall interact with the Native Americans currently occupying lands the U.S. desires for expansion. Interactions with the Natives have proven to be bloody and dangerous throughout the years and a multitude of strategies have been used to ease tensions during expansion. Which decision will you make to help settlers improve relations with the Indians? 'Directions: Choose a scenario below that you think you would have supported. Be sure to state why you would chose such an option and how it would affect both the United States AND the Native Americans themselves. Scenario #1: Give the Indians all of their land back and make the settlers go back to the safety of the East Coast. Scenario #2: Kill all of the Indians and take their lands. Scenario #3: Assimilate the Indians into “American” culture. Scenario #4: Push the Indians onto reservation lands in areas that settlers don’t want to live Scenario #5: Redraw the political boundaries of the United States to include areas allowed for settlement and areas preserved for indigenous populations, determined through negotiation Scenario #6: Ship all of the Indians to Canada and build an electric barbed wire fence to keep them from coming back to the U.S.

The Populist Party was a third-party movement that sprung up in the 1890s and drew support from many disgruntled farmers of the time period. Many of the reform ideas of the Grange and the farmer’s alliance from your chapter reading would become part of the Populist Movement in later years. This third-party would shake the foundations of the two-party system in the elections of 1892 and 1896, which you will read about in Chapter 19. The notes you will take below show the very foundation of this party of the people.
