THE PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Library is a place to go when you need to know, it is
a place where you can see lots of books, written or printed
materials that can support the curriculum of the users being
served. The La Salle University Libraries and Media Centers
aims to provide different formats to enhance classroom
instruction, encourage research, and promote continuous
education through the use of its resources. La Salle
University Libraries and Media Center not only provides
books but an also electronic resource which is the ProQuest.
ProQuest is a gateway to the world’s knowledge that is
from dissertations to governmental and cultural archives to
news, in all forms this include electronic and microform
information products and services to different institutions.
This takes the role of important to libraries and
organizations whose mission is depending on the delivery of
complete and trustworthy information. This known database
contains extensive general reference resource providing
access to many publications with more than those in full
text (Curtis, 2005).
The advantage of having this kind of resources is that
2
it is widely known and it is used by many institutions in
the Philippines like De La Salle University, Ateneo,
University of the Philippines, etc, and its proven useful in
all kinds of needs.
The database includes citations of graduate and
undergraduate works ranging from the first U.S.
dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as
recently as last semester. Of the 2.3 million graduate works
included in the database, ProQuest offers more than 1.9
million in full text formats. Of those, over 860,000 are
available in PDF format. More than 60,000 dissertations and
theses are added to the database each year.
La Salle University-Ozamiz City subscribes this
database because of the partnership with De La Salle
Philippines (DLSP) and it gives only a minimal fee from the
original fee of subscription which is P1,619,953.34.
ProQuest can be accessed in campus and off-campus. For
off-campus, the user makes it sure that there is an internet
connection by searching the URL search.proquest.com and type
the I.D. number and password and for in-campus there is no
need for you to log-in since it was being programmed already
to all computers inside the campus. The users also can make
his/her account for continuously reading the article and can
save his/her time to access the information again. ProQuest
3
can be accessed in integrated school and LSU Heritage
campus.
The library promotes the resources by posting it to
the library bulletin board and electronic board, by posting
the poster in the entrance of the library, by posting the
URL in the front of the computer below the monitor, and the
Library and Media Centers also conducted orientation on how
to use the ProQuest.
Therefore, the researchers would like to conduct a
study to know whether the students are using or not using
ProQuest, whether the students aware the availability of
ProQuest, there frequency to the usage of proQuest, the
reasons of using ProQuest and the barriers in using
ProQuest.
Review of Related Literature
ProQuest connects people to information anywhere they
study, work, invent or seek to learn.
According on Reitz (2004), ProQuest is an information
service that supply online indexing of articles published in
thousands of current publication, including the full-text of
a important number of titles. ProQuest in one of the leading
aggregators of journals accessible in electronic format
that use of online e-resources and retrieval systems
requires a basic knowledge of computing and searching
skills.
The use of a computer as a medium for reading and
interacting with course materials offers advantages such as
efficient searching, convenient storage of large amounts of
information, and navigation via hyperlinks that connect
sections of text argues that the migration to the web of
content traditionally delivered by instructors in lecture
format is helping shift the function served by brick and
mortar classrooms from information delivery to collaboration
and discussion. This paper contends that in resource where
students have limited access to the Internet, the value of
web content is evident when learning resources are
9
downloaded and read offline. This means that students do not
need to be online to read resources nor incur unnecessary
printing.
Theoretical Framework
This study is anchored on the theory of Joe Reynolds
(2001) which states that: "ProQuest is an essential resource
for researchers. This rich electronic archive will bring the
world situation complete history to life: from its first
issue-a fourpage, rag-paper issue from the post-Civil War
era-through the World Wars, the Cold War, the Watergate era,
and into the 21st century. This is a privileged to bring
this proprietary information to ProQuest users."
According to De Seta (2004), as the standards-based
education movement grows, teachers want more than ever to
find and use the right instructional resources to address
national, state and local educational standards. As a
leading content supplier, one of ProQuest’s most significant
roles is to supply mentor with the tools, properties and
resources to achieve that goal."
In addition to the studies conducted by De Seta (2004)
is that other supplier offer standards-based searching
merely for limited content position, with standing alignment
to standard. ProQuest is the first collective database
10
provider to offer the service with active searching
crossways content and every current condition and national
knowledge standard. In a whole, eLibrary will consent
educators to search by standards crossways more than 50
million documents and above.
Statement of the problem
This study was conducted to determine the use,
awareness, frequency, reasons and barriers of ProQuest to
the college students of La Salle University, Ozamiz City,
School Year 2013-2014.
Specifically, it attempts to answer the following
questions:
1. How many LSU students use the ProQuest?
2. How the LSU students are made aware of the
availability of the ProQuest?
3. What is the frequency of the respondents’ usage of
the ProQuest?
4. What are the reasons LSU students uses ProQuest?
5. What are the students’ barriers in using ProQuest?
Significance of the study
This research endeavors to be of value to the
following groups of people:
11
Administrators. The result of the study will help
them to realize that ProQuest being subscribed by the school
are adherently utilized by the students.
Faculty. The result of this study will help them
realize the importance of ProQuest in the academic needs of
their students and to support their teaching methods with
information from the e-journals.
Librarians/ Information Specialist. Findings obtained
from this study will really give big impact to Librarians
since they are the consultant of information and through by
it, they can measure the strength and weaknesses of the
database that being subscribed by the school.
Alumni. This study will be beneficial to the alumni as
they can also access the database being subscribed by the
school to support their profession in life.
Students. The students of LSU- Ozamiz City, will
highly benefit from this study, since they are the reasons
why the school subscribed this database that could help them
in their academic needs and they may used the scholarly
reliable e-journals coming from the prominent authors around
the world.
Researchers. The researchers may find out the ease of
finding information by using the ProQuest the online
database that contains thesis and dissertations for stronger
12
references.
Scope and Limitations
The study was conducted to the college students of
seven different colleges and one school in La Salle
University- Ozamiz City during the second semester of school
year 2013-2014, namely: College of Arts and Sciences (CAS),

Instruments
The study used the questionnaire that was adapted from
the study entitled “A Study on the Use of Electronic
Journals among the Academic Staff of Monash Univesity
Malaysia” by Nor Zaina Zaharah Binti Haji Mohamad Ariff a
researcher from Monah University Malaysia. Items from her
questionnaire were selected for this study and were modified
and organized together so that they can be suited to the
study.
The questionnaire was divided into five (5) parts,
namely: Part I, the use of ProQuest to the respondents; Part
II contains the questions about the awareness on the
availability of ProQuest; Part III contains the questions
about the frequency of the respondents’ usage of ProQuest;
17
Part IV contains the questions about the reasons of using
ProQuest; Part V contains questions about the barriers of
using ProQuest. The comment portion in the questionnaire was
provided to get their suggestions.
Data Gathering Procedure
Prior to the administration of the research
instrument, a letter requesting the permission to conduct
the survey for the study entitled “The Use of ProQuest among
LSU Students” was made. The letter was addressed to the Dean
of seven different colleges and one school, namely: College
of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Business (CBE),
College of Computer Studies (CCS), College of Engineering
and Architecture (CEA), College of Accountancy (COA),
College of Nursing (CON), College of Teachers Education
(CTE) and School of Tourism and Hospitality Management
(STHM).
After the permission was granted, the researchers
conducted the survey to the target respondents.
Responses to the different items of the respondents
were collated, tabulated, analyzed and interpreted.
Treatment of Data
18
The researchers collected the questionnaires from the
respondents. The data were collated, tabulated, analyzed and
interpreted. After collecting the questionnaires, the
results were tabulated. In analyzing the data, the
descriptive statistics was used. In order to interpret the
data accurately, the study used the Frequency and Percentage
distribution and Weighted mean, specifically in Part IV.
The Scoring Range behavior was used in getting a
definite interpretation of the weighted mean specifically in
Part V.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
This chapter presents, analyzes and interprets data
drawn from the conduct of the study. These were done in the
manner the problems are presented in the first chapter.
Table 2 Distribution of number of students who use ProQuest
Description No. of Respondents Percentage
YES 281 77%
NO 83 23%
TOTAL 364 100%
The Table 2 shown that 364 respondents out of 505 are
aware of ProQuest and out of 364 respondents’ only 281 uses
the ProQuest.
It claims that they are aware of ProQuest and it
proves that the school has subscribed to ProQuest. This
means that the school has made efforts for students to know
that they can use ProQuest in school.
As presented in Table 2 that 77% of the respondents
are answered YES that they used ProQuest. It shows that they
20
are really using it for their further studies and made the
database being useful in any terms.
Romanis and Aarnio (2006) (in Anaraki, 2013) supported
that the use of electronic resources differed among
students. Information-searching skills are correlated with
the use of electronic resources, but the level of basic
skills does with the use of electronic resources, but the
level of basic skills does play a major role in using these
resources. The student data shows that adequate training in
information-searching skills will increase the use of
electronic information resources.

The University library bulletin board should be
updated, attractive, and informative because as what shown
above that the library really gives big impact to the user’s
awareness of ProQuest.

TOTAL 281 100%
As shown in Table 4, it claims that the highest
percentage which is 58% of the respondents occasionally use
the ProQuest, because the respondents use ProQuest when they
have assignments, reports, research occasionally or 11 to 15
times they used and the least percentage of respondents
usage of ProQuest is Daily which has 1 %, that they use
ProQuest two to three times a day.

As shown in Table 5 that research is the main reason
of the respondents in using ProQuest which is ranks first
and the least reason on using ProQuest is Professional
development which is ranks fifth.
As supported by Klausner (2011), that ProQuest
information and learning is a world leader in collecting,
organizing, and publishing information worldwide for
researchers, faculty and students in libraries and school
and he said that “we will provide our customers with the
most accurate, complete and current information about their
e-journal holdings for their research needs and others”.

4.10 Minor Barrier
TOTAL 4.10 Minor Barrier
The Table 5 shows that 4.10 is the total range of
barriers in using ProQuest. It proves that the following
indicators are minor barriers of using ProQuest. The highest
24
mean of the respondents perceived barriers in using ProQuest
is dealing with several different formats (PDF, HTML, etc.)
with different access and use modes which has 4.20 range and
it is minor barrier and accurately reproducing color
illustrations from electronic articles has the lowest mean
of 3.60 which is minor barrier.
According to Bishop (1995), it is associated to
several aspects, such as availability at any time and from
any location, speed of information delivery, availability of
user-friendly interfaces and technologies, support from the
library, navigation functionalities, IT infrastructures and
authentication processer.
Based on a survey on ARL and non-ARL libraries,
Shemberg and Grossman (1999) (in Bishop, 1995) identify the
following methods available to users for accessing e-
articles such a searching an electronic index, finding a
citation and being linked to the full text, searching an
electronic index, finding a citation and searching the
library’s OPAC, searching an e-journal web page.

etc.) with different access and use modes has the
highest mean and it is minor barrier.
Conclusion
Based on the findings presented on this study, the
researchers conclude that the use of ProQuest among LSU
students must be implemented and promoted because ProQuest
is very important for all students in finding reliable
information connection to the subject interest in their
researches and in order to make used all the electronic
resources that the school purchases.
Recommendations
In the light of the result of the study, the following
27
recommendations are set into views.
1. The libraries of La Salle University must inform
everyone about ProQuest by having a formal
orientation on its functions and uses.
2. The libraries of La Salle University must publish
newsletters to every student of LSU.
3. The libraries of La Salle University must
establish partnership with Tingog in marketing
the library resources, especially about
ProQuest.
4. The libraries of La Salle University must add and
improve the number of resources that support
ProQuest.
