Ionic Bond:

• Ionic bonds form when electrons are transferred from one element to another– Ionic bonds occur between metals

and non-metals• Ionic bonds have the following

properties:– High melting and boiling points– Can be brittle in solid state– Think salt

Ionic Bond:

• Ionic bonds:– Atoms are neutral because protons

and electrons are equal– Transfer of electrons change the

number of electrons for each element– Create ions: charged particles that

are formed when atoms gain or lose electrons• Atoms must be close to each other for

them to gain or lose

– Created compounds are NEUTRAL

Pearls of Wisdom:

• An ionic bond is a bond that forms when electrons are transferred from one atom to another. During ionic bonding, the atoms become oppositely charged ions.

• Ionic bonding usually occurs between atoms of metals and atoms of nonmetals.

• Energy is needed to remove electrons from metal atoms. Energy is released when most nonmetal atoms gain electrons.
