• Inherited economic problems leading to Panic of 1837:– No more Bank of U.S.– States printing lots of $$$.– Public lands for sale went

fast.– Jackson had tried to slow

down land speculation by making them pay in gold or silver.

– When investors tried to cash out paper $ for gold or silver, banks didn’t have it-They closed!

– Depression hit.– Van Buren used laissez faire approach-unpopular!

William Henry Harrison1841

• Whig-New name for National Republicans like JQA. Wanted Federal involvement.

• Campaign: Tippecanoe and Tyler, Too! Slogan; portrayed as man of people, but actually wealthy; much mudslinging

• Gave 100 minute inaugural address in cold and snow w/out hat or coat, caught pneumonia, and died a month later.

• 1st President to die in office.

John Tyler1841-1845

• Whig, but did not support Whig policies

• Vetoed Bank charter• Never elected Pres.

James K. Polk1845-1849

• Democrat• Expansionist- 54°40’ or
