21. Battle of Jutland—fought off the coast of Denmark, May-June, 1916. This fight between the British and the Germans was the only major sea battle of WWI (The Great War).

2. The British cut the transatlantic cable connecting Germany and the U.S. All news from Europe came from London. Its pro-Allied bias helped shape the opinion of the American people.

3. May 7, 1915, a U-Boat sank the Lusitania off the coast of Ireland. (128 Americans died).

4. Wilson demanded that Germany stop submarine warfare.

5. Germany promised to stop sinking passenger ships without warning.

6. March 24, 1916, a German submarine sank the Sussex, a French passenger ship. The U.S. threatened to cut diplomatic ties to Germany.

7.Sussex Pledge—the Germany government again promised that U-boats would warn ships before attacking.

8. Pres. Election of 1916- Wilson a Dem. Ran on the slogan “He kept us out of war”.

Charles E. Hughes a Rep., criticized Wilson for not taking a strong enough stand against Germany.

Wilson won by a narrow margin.

10. Feb. 3, 1917-The U.S. broke off diplomatic relations with Ger. And began arming merchant ships.
