Because of the publication of the Noli MeTangere and the uproar it caused among thefriars

Rizal was warned by Paciano (his brother),Silvestre Ubaldo (his brother-in-law),

Chengoy (Jose M. Cecilio) and other friends notto return home. But he did not heed theirwarning.

 June 19, 1887 – written in Geneva , Rizal said“Your advice that I live in Madrid and continue towrite from there is very benevolent but I cannot

accept it. I cannot endure the life in Madrid whereeverything is a voice in a wilderness. My parentswant to see me, and I want to see them also. All mylife I desire to live in my country by the side of my

 family. Until now I am not Europeanized like theFilipinos of Madrid; I always like to return to thecountry of my birth” .

 June 29,1887, Rizal wrote to his father,announcing his homecoming, “On the15th of July ,at the latest I shall embark for our country, so that from the 15th to the 30th 

of August, we will see each other” .

On July 3, 1887, he boarded the steamerDjemnah same steamer which brought him toEurope five years ago.

50 passengers, including 4 Englishmen, 2Germans, 3 Chinese, 2 Japanese, manyfrenchman and 1 Filipino ( Rizal)

Rizal was the only one among the passengerswho could speak many languages.

He acted as interpreter for his companions

 July 30 , he transferred to another

steamer (Haiphong) which was Manilabound.

August 2, this steamer left Saigon forManila

August 5, the Haiphong arrived in Manila

He stayed in the city for short time to visit hisfriends

He found manila the same as when he left five

years ago.

On August 8th he returned to Calamba

His family welcome him affectionately , withplentiful

He found his family enjoying good health andhappiness to seeing each other again.

They shed tears of joy and He had to answerten thousand questions at the same time .

February,1888, he earned a total of P5,000 asmedical fees

Rizal did not selfishly devote all his time toenriching himself.

He opened a gymnasium for young folk, where

introduced European sports. He tried to interest his town mates in

gymnastics, fencing and shooting so as todiscourage the cockfights and gambling.

He failed to see Leonora Rivera. Leonora’smother did not like him to be son in-law.

 A Few weeks after arrival, a storm broke over his novel.

Rizal received a letter from Governor General

Emilio Terrero (1885-1888) requesting him tocome in Malacañan Palace.

The general asked the author for a copy of theNoli so that he could read it.

Rizal had no copy then because the only copyhe brought home was given to a friend .

The Governor’s hear that the Noli containedsubversive ideas

Governor General Terrero read the Noli and foundnothing wrong with it

But Rizal’s enemies were powerful. The Archbishopof Manila, Msgr. Pedro Payo sent a copy of the Noli

Father Recto Gregorio Echavarria of the Santo Tomasfor examination by a committee of the faculty

The report of the faculty members of UST stated thatthe Noli was "heretical, impious ,and scandalous inthe religious order, and antipatriotic, subversive ofpublic order, injurious to the government of Spainand its function in the Philippine Island in thepolitical order”.

Governor Genneral Terrono was dissatisfiedwith the report, he sent the novel to the
