blogging, chatrooms, DVD replacing VCR. • 2000s- broadband, DVRs, Satellite Radio, HD, Ipods, MP3, Digital Cinema – will not

stop coming.

The Functions of Media• those days , media functions were to entertain, inform and persuade• today, e-media are involved with :• presenting entertainment• disseminating news and information• aiding commerce• transmitting culture and customs• acting as a watchdog• providing relaxation and companionship • connecting people with each other

Presenting Entertainment• dominant• movies, music, dramas, sports, etc• past activities – passive “couch potatoes”• present – adding in participation – your own program – YouTube• you decide the ending • sex and violence • immitations

Disseminating News and Information• can transcends beyond entertainment – terrorist attack, a fire, a tornado – we will

turn to media• internet , mobile phone , radio• information will always be available• programming – informational style• personalized news • sensationalized, lack of information , titillating

Aiding Commerce• advertisement • to persuade • need additional creativity – humor and effects • tailored commercials • change of shopping pattern • not easy to gain attention – we can skip the advert

Transmitting Culture and Customs• unintentional – mother, good life • intentional - religious programming, p.s.a, • creates stereotypes & give false impressions • culture clash

Acting as a Watchdog• watching what others are doing – government , politicians • media – responsibility to report – by the journalist • interpretation & conclusion

Provide Relaxation and Companionship• older people who live alone• relaxing music , emails, video games or talking to friends on phone • release from boredom • emotional release • synonym for laziness • waste a lot of time

Connecting People to Each Other• something in common• conversation and discussion • direct contact between people• “connected generation” – high use of cell phones and other communication devices• also help them to disconnect

The Democratization of Media• more in control of the media • past – gatekeepers controlled most of the public’s use of media• today – these gatekeepers have lesser power• camcorders and cell phones – supply news • we select our own music, movies – we decide • user- generated content• misuse of information – Rohingya issue

Convergence, Proliferation and Resilience

• bringing together various media forms and facilities• radio – stream program over internet• TV Programs – podcast • Satellite TV – high speed access. • using the same staff members to serve all media forms.

Proliferation• distributing media content to a wide variety of venues through ever-increasing

numbers of distribution platforms• media products are everywhere – fast food restaurants, buses , airports , etc• portable equipment – ipad, galaxy notes , dvd player, cell phone

Resilience• ability of various forms of electronic media to adapt and continue to exist• movie theatres – still exist
