This festival is on 31st of October. People used to believe the spirit of the dead appeared at night. Nowadays, in Britain and the USA, children dress up as witches and ghosts and go to fancy dress parties. They decorate their houses with pumpkin lanterns, made from pumpkins with candles inside and put them in the window. In the evening you may hear a knock on your door and shout “Trick or treat!” Give them a piece of candy or they may put soap on your window.

In 1621 William Bradford, the Governor of Massachusetts, decided to have a thanksgiving dinner for all the people. He wanted to thank God for many things. Read the article given and present to your class. Saint Patrick’s Day is a great celebration in Ireland. People sing and dance in the streets. They wear green Clothes because green is the national colour of the country. They also wear shamrock, the symbol of Ireland. There are special days we celebrate during the year. Sometimes they are holidays, people don’t go to work and there’s no school. We prepare special food, we send cards to our friends, we get together with our families and we exchange gifts. Some of these days have a religious origin, for example Christmas, Saint Patrick’s Day and Easter. Others such as Thanksgiving, are historical. There are also traditional celebrations : Halloween and New Year’s Day. Finally, we have a few sentimental celebrations such as Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day.
