Chapter 1 Ecosystems and ecosystem services maps Natures Benefits in Kenya
This is the first presentation of many related to the http://virtualkenya.org platform. By 22 June 2011 more presentation will be posted on slideshare and on the http://virtualkenya.org website.
The Virtual Kenya website provides users with a platform to interactively view, explore, and download Atlas data in a variety of file formats and software applications, including Virtual Kenya Tours using Google Earth. In addition, GIS users in Kenya will—for the first ime—have a dedicated online social networking community to share their work, comment and interact with each other on topics related to maps and other spatial data.
What This Presentation Shows: After highlighting the relevance of nature to people’s livelihoods and the importance of natural resources in Kenya’s economy, this presentationintroduces the concept of ecosystems and ecosystem services. It describes various categories of ecosystem services, briefly explains some underlying ecosystem processes, and emphasizes that understanding the processes that affect the flow of ecosystem services is essential for effective ecosystem management. Six maps showing the physical geography; rainfall patterns; major ecosystem types; and densities of wildlife, livestock, and people provide a synoptic view of Kenya as a context for the subsequent chapters on poverty and selected ecosystem services.
This presentation based on Nature’s Benefits in Kenya: An Atlas of Ecosystems and Human Well-Being (“the Atlas”), originally published jointly in 2007 by the World Resources Institute together with the Department of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing, the Central Bureau of Statistics, and the International Livestock Research Institute
