I’ve decided to share highlights of what I consider one of the most challenging, yet smooth, surgical missions I’ve been fortunate to attend. The success is thanks to impeccable medical records volunteers, gracious and omnipresent Firestone Duside hosts, logistics coordinators, and some of the hardest-working nurses and physicians I know! Over the course of seven days, more than 4,000 children were dewormed, 130 surgical patients were screened, 91 surgeries were performed, and daily lectures and hands-on professional training was provided to our Liberian colleagues. For that we are both grateful and proud. Here are some highlights from our week: Dr. Janelle Fox WINTER 2019 • We worked collaboratively with the staff at Firestone Duside Hospital. This committed local team of 142 healthcare workers serves more than 5,500 Liberians. • We were reminded of the worst Ebola outbreak in history, affecting nearly 10,000 Liberians and taking the lives of nine Firestone employees/family. We learned about the Ebola treatment units (ETUs) originating at Firestone Liberia and modeled by the CDC for containment of Ebola. • We remembered one of our longtime guesthouse friends, David, who was always smiling, but died suddenly this past year. • We celebrated life with the birthday of one of our teammates, CSI nurse Maggie Cavanaugh. • We met supportive Firestone leaders and strong Liberian women, like Sargent Cesar, who are committed to the peaceful development of local families. ◊The93-yearrubberindustrypartnershipwithLiberia,whichhassurvivedacivilwar,Ebola,slaughterhouse tapping and crop decimation, as well as plummeting rubber prices.
◊ Firestone’s sustainable planting practices, net zero deforestation policy, rubberwood repurposing and services to help small-volume farmers.
◊ How cassava is made into the local fufu, and all about Liberian lappas, which a local seamstress converted into tunics, dresses, tablecloths and aprons for homegoing gifts.
◊ A 14-year civil war, which ended in 2004, still has lasting effects in Liberia.
◊ The annual cost of childhood education is $200 and often the biggest barrier to education is uniform costs.
◊ Much medical and surgical need remains.

But this week, most of all, we learned how a well-trained team of Firestone Duside employees and dedicated CSI volunteers can share a vision and work seamlessly together to change lives and make a lasting impact in the world.
liberia, we will miss you. until next year!

Each fall, Children’s Surgery International hosts a year-end giving campaign. The Fall Fund Drive is critical to meeting our fundraising goals that support life-changing surgical and education trips around the world.
Donors participated in several ways:
• Give to the Max Day
• Fall Event at Earl & Wilson
• Dine Out for Good at Lowbrow
• Shopping event at Evereve
• Donations to honor volunteers
• Individual and corporate donations
Thanks to your generous support, we were able to raise a record $65,000. This success pays for an entire team and trip to change dozens of lives and make a lasting impact! Thank you to the many donors who made this possible. Thank you!
Thank you for making the 2018 Fall Fund drive a success!
