This leaflet gives information on changes to the maximumrecommended number of units available on prescription.

If you are diagnosed as needing gluten-free (GF) food as part of your coeliac disease and/or dermatitis herpetiformis care, please note that the maximum recommended number of units available on prescription for adults has been reduced to:

Age and Sex Allowed number of units per month

Adults aged 19 and older 8

Female in 3rd trimester ofpregnancy 9

Breastfeeding female 12

It is expected that patients will purchase any additional GF products required to ensure a healthy diet from supermarkets or online.

When do these changes come into effect?

1st March 2015.

Why reduce units for adults aged 19 and older?

The number of units funded by the NHS has been reduced because:

• AwiderangeofGFproductscan now be purchased at supermarkets, health food shops and online. When GPs were first able to prescribe GF foods, the range available in shops was very limited. It was therefore appropriate, at that time, for more units to be prescribed as it was virtually the only way that patients could obtain them. As this is no longer the case, it seems reasonable for fewer units to be prescribed now.

• Itisrecognisedthatitisnotnecessary for patients to rely on GF products to maintain a balanced diet. Many patients alter their diet and replace bread and pasta with other naturally gluten-free carbohydrate foods such as potatoes, rice and some noodles. These products can be purchased at reasonable prices from supermarkets.

Questions and answers

Page 3: Changes to gluten-free prescribing for patients aged 19 ......All fresh meat, fish and poultry. Tinned fish- e.g., tuna/salmon. Smoked, kippered or dried fish. Gluten-free sausages.

• GFproductsonprescriptionareoften more expensive than GF products from supermarkets.

• Fooditemsaregenerallynot available on prescription for other conditions.

Are the units for patients aged 18 and younger reduced?

No. The number of units available on prescription for patients aged 18 and younger will remain the same as per Coeliac UK recommendations.

Which products can I get on my prescription?

The list of prescription items includes staple foods to support a healthy diet. It includes fresh and long-life bread and rolls, flour and bread mixes, and pasta. Only certain brands are available on prescription. Please see the list on pages 4 and 5 of items available on prescription for full details and the units per item.

Which foods are naturally gluten-free?

Many foods are naturally gluten-free such as fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cream, milk, rice, potatoes, pulses and beans. For further information on which foods do not contain gluten and which foods do, please refer to the lists on page 6 and 7.

Why can’t I get biscuits and cakes on my prescription anymore?

All patients are advised to follow a healthy, well-balanced diet including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Biscuits and cakes are usually not recommended as a part of healthy diet other than as occasional treats and so will not be prescribed anymore.

Why can’t I get pizza bases or crackers on prescription anymore?

GF pizza bases and crackers are available from supermarkets at a reasonable cost and can be similarly priced to gluten-containing products. It is therefore considered appropriate for patients to purchase these, if required. Also bread mixes are available on prescription and so can be used to bake your own pizza.
