Changes to Earth’s Surface UnitWeek 24

Directions1.Prepare your desk for science.• Science notebook

2.Use voice level 2 (conversation) and notebook pg. 60 to discuss the following question:

• What is weathering? What are some of the causes of weathering?

Targets & Warm UpTargets:• Students will describe causes and effects of

changes to Earth’s surface.• Students will determine how weathered

material moves.

Warm Up: What is weathering? What are some of the causes of weathering?

How can you observe a mineral wear away? (pg. 260)

4 groups of students • Materials:– 1 plastic jar with a lid– 4 pieces of chalk• You need to split each piece into 2 so you have a total

of 8 pieces

– 10 rocks– 1 plate

Erosion

• The moving of pieces of soil or rock by mechanisms including gravity, wind, water, ice, or plants or animals.

Causes:• Moving water• Moving ice (glaciation)

Erosion: Moving Water• Moving water carries away materials from the

land– Streams and rivers carry pieces of rock far away– The running water carves into the land and forms

valleys or canyons

Erosion: Moving Water

• Moving water carries away materials from the land–Waves pound against cracks in rocks on the

shore and pieces of rock break off (weathering)– The waves carry the pieces away–Beaches and other landforms develop

Erosion: Ice (Glaciation)

• Occurs in colder parts of Earth– Antarctica and Greenland

• Moving ice erodes landforms• Glaciers are huge sheets of ice– Move very slowly as gravity pulls them downhill– As it slides, it wears away bits of rock and soil– Even small glaciers can easily rip rocks apart and

carry large chunks for long distances

Weathering vs. Erosion

• How are weathering and erosion similar and different?

Writing Activity

Answer the following question: How are weathering and erosion similar and different?

• 4th grade paragraph (6 – 8 sentences)• Include examples to help explain your

thoughts
