This five-week course will be offered again this spring, one evening each week at CVU. The start date has yet to be determined. The cost is $30 per person, which includes a family workbook and dinner each week. Scholarships are available, and childcare may be available upon request. Pre-registration is required and space is limited, so sign-up now before the course fills up!

April is Alcohol Awareness Month

Each day, 7,000 youth in the United States, under the age of sixteen, take their first drink. In honor of ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH, please remember that no matter what your role is in our community—parent, teacher, neighbor, friend, coach—YOU can help make a difference in preventing underage drinking. According to prevention research, young people who start to drink before the age of fifteen are five times more likely than those who begin at age twenty-one to become dependent on alcohol. Those who begin drinking at an early age are significantly more likely to experience other harmful effects from use such as injuries, physical fights, and motor vehicle crashes. Because of the life-threatening consequences of alcohol use, prevention is the most effective way to keep youth safe and healthy. Students need to hear the message that underage drinking is not okay from all of the adults in their lives. This message should come from home, school, and from within the community. The first step is to understand the dangers of alcohol use among minors, and then spread the message that our community will not tolerate underage drinking. To understand more about this critical issue, here are some enlightening statistics. • Adolescents who believe that alcohol use is a normal part of growing up are at the greatest risk for becoming

addicted at an early age. • Research indicates that adolescents who abuse alcohol may remember 10% less of what they have learned than

those who do not drink. • Parents' drinking behaviors and favorable attitudes about drinking have been associated with adolescents'

initiating and continuing drinking. • High school students who use alcohol or other drugs frequently are more likely than other students to drop out of

school. • Research studies indicate that children are less likely to drink when their parents are involved with them and when

they report feeling close to each other. • Adolescents drink less and have fewer alcohol-related problems when their parents set clear and consistent

guidelies and consequences. • Older siblings' alcohol use can influence the use of younger siblings in the family, particularly for same sex

siblings. • A few years ago, research determined the total cost attributable to the consequences of underage drinking. This

was more than $58 billion per year! • More than one-half of American adults have a close family member who is an alcoholic or has abused alcohol. • Alcohol is implicated in more than 100,000 deaths annually. • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that the laws specifying 21 as the minimum

drinking age have saved 22,798 lives since the mid-1970s. • Girls ages 12 to 16 who are current drinkers are four times more likely than their non-drinking peers to suffer

from depression. • In 2003, 1.5 million youth ages 12 to 17 needed treatment for an alcohol problem. Of this group, only 95,000

(6.3%) of them received any treatment at a specialty facility, leaving an estimated 1.4 million youths who needed but did not receive treatment.

These statistics were taken with permission from www.alcoholfreechildren.org.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of youth in our community. Please talk to the children in your life about the dangers of using alcohol, and remember that if you choose to drink, you should model legal, appropriate, and responsible use.

For more information about this issue, or if you would like to voice your concern about a student who might be using alcohol or other substances, please contact Jen Bickel, the Student Assistance Program Counselor at CVU, at 482-6951.

Pasture News CVU's student-driven store, The Pasture, hosted a trivia contest during the school's Winter Carnival. Students

had to correctly answer 10 trivia questions and be the first to race back to the Pasture to secure the win. In the end Megan Montgomery was the winner and received a $10 gift certificate to the store. Congratulations, Megan.

A special Thank You to teachers Justin Chapman, Chris Hood, and Pam Lord for providing us with creative questions for the contest. The Pasture will be open for business on Graduation Challenge Day, Friday May 18. Student manager Gretchen Cochrane invites everyone to stop by and purchase a gift for that special senior. We carry exclusive CVU merchandise including Nalgene bottles, teddy bears, and apparel. A variety of fresh flowers will also be available. We look forward to seeing you on May 18th.

Library News New Hours 7:30 am - 4 pm, Monday - Friday

In order to fully staff the library during the busiest times of the day, the library hours are changing slightly. New library hours are 7:30 am until 4 pm. Historically, an after-school staff position kept the library open through the evening, but the position was cut in 2005. Library staff then staggered their hours in order to keep the library open from 7:30 am until 5 pm Mondays through Thursdays. After reviewing the average number of visits to the library during early block (573) compared to after school (173), full staffing during the school day was determined a priority. This decision was further supported by the average number of students in the library during early block (> 110) compared to after school (< 10). Typical after-school use of the library has been for phone and computer access. Please make sure your student is prepared for the 4 pm closing time. New Biography Database

The CVU community now has access to a new research database—Wilson Web Biographies Plus, Biography Reference Bank, Current Biography Illustrated, and Junior Authors & Illustrators. Access it from the library website at http://www.cvuhs.org/library/CVULibrary.htm. This web-based resource is available without login at school and with username and password from home. For more information on this or other library databases (Grolier Online, OED Online, Thomson Gale, NewsBank, ABC-CLIO, Greenwood Daily Life, United Streaming, TurnItIn), please call the library at 482-7125 or email librarians Jennifer Lucey [email protected] or Ellen Arapakos [email protected]. Student Book Reviews

Looking for a good read? See what CVU students have read & recommended at http://cvureads.pbwiki.com/. Green Mountain Book Award Voting April 30

The Green Mountain Book Award is a state-sponsored, student choice award that is still fairly new. Like the DCF or Red Clover awards, Vermont high school students who have read three or more of this year’s list of nominated books are eligible to vote for their favorite by April 30th. The complete list of this year’s 2006-2007 Green Mountain Book Award nominees can be viewed at http://dol.state.vt.us/gopher_root5/libraries/gmba/GMBAMasterClr2006.PDF. Interested students should speak with librarian Ellen Arapakos.

Friends Of CVU Grants awarded by Friends of CVU

The Fiduciary committee of the Friends of CVU, chaired by Amy Berger, has announced its grants for this academic year. The grants are dependent on revenues from memberships to the Friends (75 families joined this year at $10/family) and concession sales. A big thank you to the parents of the men and women’s basketball teams who operated the concession stand at home games…it’s a long season! v $250 to the Home/School Coordinator's Sunshine Fund for students that are living on their own for such

items as toiletries and food. v $640 to the Ultimate Frisbee Club for frisbees for a fundraiser and club activity fees. v $500 to the Baseball team for a tarp to cover home plate and the pitcher's mound during bad weather. We

asked them to put from Friends of CVU on it.

Page 5: Champlain Valley Union High Schoolcvuweb.cvuhs.org › newsletter › April07.pdf · 2007-04-04 · Champlain Valley Union High School Parent Newsletter April 2007 NECAP Testing for

v $1019 to the Math Dept for graphing calculators for those who cannot afford them. The school would own them.

v $400 to the Phoenix Program for an outing to the Montshire Museum. v $500 to the Environmental Action Club for transporting compost to the intervale. CVU will be collecting

food waste to eliminate trash and will get back compost for the cafeteria's garden. Hinesburg Elementary school is also participating in this program and will be contributing to the cost of the truck to transport the waste.

Graduation Challenge Friday, May 18th The Friends of CVU support the Grad Challenge program every year by providing an extensive buffet breakfast for students and their Grad Challenge panelists. Town representatives will be calling those who volunteered to help with Grad Challenge. Good Luck to all the seniors on their presentations. Thanks to Karen Whitby and Pam Darling for being this year’s chairs of the event. Staff Appreciation Luncheon Friday, May 25th Every year, the Friends of CVU sponsor a luncheon to thank the faculty and staff of CVU for their hard work on our children’s behalf. The Friends prepare the famous chicken salad and a thank you in advance to all the people who have volunteered to provide salads and desserts. The town reps will be calling to confirm as we get closer to the event.

Final Exam Schedule

June 11-15, 2007 The last week of each semester may be used for traditional exams or other forms of assessment. The expectation is that all classes will meet during the time that is scheduled for them. In other words, if you do not have an exam, you will be in a regular classroom activity during that time. Students will not have a “day off” because their respective classes are not giving an exam or they have done so well they don’t need to take exams. Seniors with an A average in year-long classes are exempt. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday June 11 June 12 June 13 June 14 June 15 8:15-10:10 W1 W4 W2 W3 Make-Up 10:30-12:30 R1 R4 R2 R3 Early Block and Very Late Block will schedule their own exams. Busses will run normal routes in the morning and at 12:40 p.m.

Student, Faculty, & School Recognition Band Wins Big

From March 22-25, CVU's Band II, Band III, and Jazz Ensemble went to a music festival in New York City. The students represented our school extremely well, and played extremely well. Band II placed 2nd in their division, with a Silver rating; Band III placed 1st in their division, with a Gold rating; and the Jazz Ensemble placed 1st in their division with a Gold rating. Band III and the Jazz Ensemble combined for the highest score from any school with two or more instrumental groups, earning them the "Sweepstakes" award, and both ensembles earned the "Adjudicator's Award," given to ensembles who score above 95 (out of 100). This award is so rarely earned that the festival didn't have two trophies to give CVU! (They'll be mailing us the other one). Special recognition went to Grace Gaylord as the "Outstanding Soloist" for her work with the Jazz Ensemble. She was the only student to be so recognized in the instrumental portion of the festival.

Over 1,500 students participated in this festival (chorally and instrumentally) from all over the USA, including groups from California, Oregon, Ohio, Illinois, Florida, and Virginia, as well as states closer to home. CVU was the only representative from Vermont at this festival.

By earning a Gold rating, Band III and the Jazz Ensemble have earned the right to compete in higher level festivals, as well as some other performance opportunities. Poetry Competition Kate Farley (grade 10) had a wonderful performance in the Poetry Out Loud competition for Chittenden County held at Champlain College. Kate was awarded second place and will move on to the Vermont State competition in April.

Matt Phelps and Brittany Jean also represented CVU and gave fine performances as well. All participants memorized and recited three poems. FBLA CVU FBLA has committed to sending care packages to a platoon in Iraq, which includes former CVU student Doug Ferriera. The goal is to send three different shipments before the end of the school year. The first shipment was sent early March. Now efforts are under way to raise items for the next two shipments. FBLA is promoting an advisory contest, asking students to bring in items needed by the troops. The advisory that donates the most items will receive ice cream, compliments of the FBLA group. In May, FBLA will enlist the help from members of our local community. Watch the May newsletter for more information on how you can help! Below: FBLA members packing and labeling our first shipment

Video Club Focuses on Filmmaking The CVU Video Club has been very busy this year, learning how to tell compelling stories through video and

film. They’ve been a part of a statewide videomaking contest called the “Fifty Hour Film Contest” twice this year – in the fall, the group made a science fiction film entitled “Dark Planet,” and this past month completed a romantic film called “Awakening.” Both films were conceived, scripted, shot, edited, and finalized in one weekend (hence “50 Hour”). See www.fiftyhourfilm.com for more info.

Capture your event! The Video Club would like to announce its new fundraiser - “Go Video.” If you have an event that you would like to have videotaped and pressed to DVD, call on the kids in Video Club and they’ll Go Video it for you. Your donation of $50 per hour will go to the purchase of new prosumer cameras for the club. Please email Paul Griffith at [email protected] to find out more.

Direction Center News Course Registration 2007-08 Round Three: Adding Alternates

So far, the course registration process for the 2007-08 school year has proceeded smoothly. In the first step in the process, students entered their course requests. After the master schedule was built based upon this data, students then selected their course schedules. In both of these two phases, students were limited to one full credit in each of the core academic areas: English, Social Studies, Math, and Science. Limiting the credits at this stage enabled all students to get the credit they need in required areas.

The third step in the process, Adding Alternates Week, is now scheduled for the week of April 16. During that week, students who wish to take additional course work in the core areas can come to the Direction Center to

Page 7: Champlain Valley Union High Schoolcvuweb.cvuhs.org › newsletter › April07.pdf · 2007-04-04 · Champlain Valley Union High School Parent Newsletter April 2007 NECAP Testing for

add those classes. The schedule for Adding Alternate Week will be the same as that used for Arena. It is as follows: Monday, April 16: Class of 2008 Block 1: Dotolo to Frey and Butchino to Doran Block 2: Adams to Burns and Strausser to Ziegler Block 3: Raszka to Stowell and Ly to Ranz Block 4: Jensen to Luria and Gagliuso to Jean Tuesday, April 17: Class of 2009 Block 1: Hall to Iadanza and Distler to Gurwicz Block 2: Busia to DesOrmeaux, Adams to Bushey, and Wohl to Ziegelman Block 3: Sienko to Willis and Perkins to Shook Block 4: Mahren to Pelletier and Jagar to Mahoney Wednesday, April 18: Class of 2010 Block 1: Jackson to Loyer and Lussier to Myers Block 2: Neagley to Reinhardt and Resnik to Titus Block 3: Trigg to Zittritsch, Adams to Backup, and Baker to Crelly Byers Block 4: Cross to Giroux and Glore to Irish

It is important to note that this week is not an add-drop period; it is simply the time when students can add the extra credits in Social Studies, Math, and Science which they were not able to schedule in Arena. Students may add up to 1 credit in Social Studies, 1 credit in Math, and .5 credit in Science. Those who wish to add an extra English class, or more than 1.5 credits in Science, will be able to do so in the regular add/drop period next Fall. We need to maintain some credit limits throughout the summer, in order to meet the needs of students who transfer to CVU.

As always, if you have any questions about any of the elements of the registration process, or if you would like the assistance of one of the counselors to resolve any scheduling issues, please do not hesitate to contact the Direction Center.

The Valerie Gardner CVU Student Trust This Trust was first established and generously funded by graduating students at Champlain Valley Union

High School in 2000. In subsequent years, other graduating classes have generously contributed to the Trust. In June 2005, the Trust was rededicated as the Valerie Gardner CVU Student Trust, honoring her wonderful legacy at CVU and enabling that legacy to continue in a meaningful way. The original purposes and processes of the Trust have been retained and are described below.

The Valerie Gardner CVU Student Trust is established to pursue three main purposes: 1. To help sustain and increase the diversity of groups and activities available in the CVU community. 2. To create an environment in which more members of the CVU community feel included. 3. To help students and teachers improve the CVU community.

In order to help fulfill this legacy, the Trust Committee is hoping to increase the balance of the trust through fundraising and award monies to school groups and/or individuals. If you wish to make a charitable contribution to the Valerie Gardner CVU Student Trust, please send your contribution to Champlain Valley Union High School. If you have any additional questions, please contact the Main Office (482-7100).

Letter From the Moon Family Dear CVU Community,

We would like to publicly thank the community for all its help and kindness. There is no way to thank everyone individually because we received help in so many different forms and from so many different sources. We remain in awe of the continued support and love that has been bestowed on our family.

We would like to thank all of the local businesses who participated in fundraising efforts. We would also like to thank some of the local Girl Scout troops for their fundraising efforts. We have set

aside some of those funds for a new puppy. We are on the list to adopt mid-summer so, “thank you, Girl Scouts, in advance for our new puppy!”

We would like to thank all who donated to the TD-Bank North account. In our most recent move, we needed to purchase a lot of essentials very quickly, and that fund made it possible.

We would like to thank our families, neighbors, employers, and our children’s schools for all their outstanding efforts and support. Update on us:

We have returned to Williston! One of our neighbors knew of a large apartment that had become available in the community and we were immediately interested. The landlords of the property have been very willing to accommodate us and our pets on a month-to-month basis while we rebuild. We are extremely grateful to them! It is such a relief to all of us to be back in our own town, minutes away from our building site and Hayley’s school.

We have a house plan ready to go as soon as the weather permits. We are making all the final “paper” steps involved, and hope to begin building within the next few weeks. Upcoming events we have been made aware of:

Some folks in the community have discussed the possibility of a “Shower” to be held mid-May at the Brick church. We would like to extend this invitation to anyone in the community who would like to attend. Gifts are not necessary. We would, however, welcome the opportunity this would provide us as a family to see everyone and thank them in person for their support. Dates to be announced soon.

Also, Barrett Peterson has been working very hard on plans to rebuild Steve’s barn. (We can never thank him enough!) He is planning a “barn raising” sometime soon. Again, dates to be announced.

There are other events that have been suggested that we are not as aware of. We feel maybe people in the community are uncertain as to how we can be reached, especially now that the website is no longer active. We would love to hear from anyone in the community. Our family email address is: [email protected] Warm regards, Lynne Moon

Graduation Challenge 2007 Community Panelists Needed

Friday, May 18, 2007

Grad Challenge presents a unique opportunity to seniors to decide what they wish to learn, find someone to guide them, and to spend a contracted number of hours in a self-designed learning experience. Seniors share their experience and research on their topic through a Tri-search paper, assessed by faculty reading groups, and a formal presentation, evaluated by a panel. Panelists are needed on Friday, May 18, 2007 for Grad Challenge Presentation Day, the culminating event of the seniors’ Graduation Challenge program. On this day, seniors make formal presentations about their Grad Challenge project to panels composed of five individuals from the community and the CVU faculty. Only seniors and juniors are required to come to school on this day. The day is filled with anticipation and celebration. Panelists have found their participation in this special day to be an exciting and (in many cases), inspiring experience. The day is divided into three blocks: two in the morning and one after lunch. Each block is one and a half hours long. During each block, over 20 classrooms are filled with panelists listening to groups of five or six seniors make presentations. Each grouping of students is loosely based on the topic they have chosen for their Graduation Challenge program.

There are eight general topic areas on which the groupings are based:

ØRecreational Wellness ØScience/Math ØEnglish/Foreign Language ØThe Arts & Entertainment ØTechnical Education ØBusiness Education ØSocial Studies/ Education ØLife Skills/Health

Panelists’ responsibility includes listening to presentations, asking questions, and evaluating a student’s performance (based on an established rubric ). All panelists are asked to attend a brief training session for a half hour prior to participating as a panelist. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

We recommend that parents of seniors not participate as a panelist. This will leave you free to watch your child’s presentation and help him/her celebrate the day.

Check off when you are available; please consider a minimum of two sessions (times below include ½ hour orientation session at start of block ):
