The island of Madeira has a long winemaking history dating back to the Age of Exploration. In the 1600 and 1700’s, Madeira was an important provisioning point for journeys to the Americas and the East Indies and sailors would stock up on this specialist wine for their onward journeys. To prevent wine from spoiling, the producers found a way to fortify the wine to survive these extensive voyages at sea. The process was to repeatedly heat the wine which developed new flavours such as roasted nuts, stewed fruit, caramel, and toffee, a process that now defines Madeira’s robust taste. The house of D’Oliveira was founded in 1850 and is one of the finest sources for specially aged Madeira wines. The company remains a family business to this day and their selection of single varietal Madeira wines date back to their founding year of 1850; the height of trading for the Clipper boats. All wines have been cask aged in the ancient cellars of D’Oliveira from 1619 and were bottled in the 1970’s.
