Chamber Publishes New Resource Directory

The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce

the publication of the 2011 Tooele Coun-ty Resource Directory. The original di-rectory was published in 1992 as a ser-vice to the community to enable them to find local businesses and community phone numbers.

The Directory was previously called the “Business and Visitors Guide”. The name was changed last year to give the magazine a new look and to remind resi-dents and visitors that the publication should be used as a resource to find lo-cal information. The Chamber hopes that residents will use the Directory year round.

This year’s cover highlights the pur-chase of the “old clinic” located at 154 South Main, Tooele, by the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce. When the remodeling of the building is com-pleted this year, the building will house the Chamber offices as well as meeting rooms for Chamber members and public meetings.

The Directory includes information about living in Tooele County and in-cludes local city and community infor-mation including names of leaders, meet-ing times and important phone numbers. It also includes a section on Community Services and contact information as well as a special section on Healthcare and Education.

In a little strip mall just south of Cal Ranch is a little store that some of

you may not even know is there, but for its loyal customers they do not know what they would do without The UPS Store for all their print-ing and shipping needs. Mike and Cindy Hollar own The UPS at 772 North Main Street here in Tooele. With Cindy as manager this busi-ness has stayed within the family for many years. Mike and Cindy decided to open the store in August of 1997 when Barrick Mining was going to close down and Mike knew he would not have a job anymore. They thought of moving to Elko Nevada so that Mike could work for Goldstrike Min-ing, but due to family circumstances it was a better choice for all to stay in Tooele. In 1997 when Mike and Cindy bought the store it was called “Mail Boxes Etc.” later, in 2002, the UPS franchise bought out Mail Boxes Etc. and the store became known as “The UPS Store” which is the current name today.

The UPS Store offers many services besides shipping. They offer copy-ing and printing services including calendars, and photos. They print in both black and white and color and offer the lowest prices around. They also offer different office services such as faxing, and printing of documents which includes collating, three-hole punch and stapling, if needed, for no extra charge. Another great ser-vice they offer is mail box services. If you decide to open a mail box at The UPS Store, some of the advantag-es you will receive are: you will not

have a P.O. Box address; you will use The UPS Store’s street address as a re-turn address. Therefore, mail can be accepted from all carriers including UPS, Fedex, and the US Postal Ser-vice. You are able to have a mail box away from your home so you know that your mail will stay safe even if you are on vacation. They have dif-ferent box sizes so you can pick what size will fit you and your needs. Of course when it comes to your pack-ing and shipping needs you want an expert to take of your valuable items that you are shipping. The UPS Store

wants to make sure that when you ship something it gets to its destina-tion safe and secure that’s why every-one at The UPS Store knows how to skillfully pack a box. The UPS Store will take care of all

your printing, copying, and shipping needs. If you are wondering how The UPS Store can help you, contact one of their friendly sales associates at 435-833-0501.

Wendover High School By Carolyn Bushman, Wendover HS teacher

Experience in Florida

Tooele County Chamber of Commerce January 20118

In October 2010, three weeks before the STS-133 launch of the Discovery Space

Shuttle was planned to take place, I received an e-mail during my prep period informing me that the school that I teach at, Wendover High School (WHS), had been selected as one of nine schools in the Pacific Northwest to send students to the upcoming launch in Florida. It was first-come-first-served for the fifty seats on the bus to the launch viewing lo-cation. I raced down to my principal’s office to get permission, contacted the district, and quickly e-mailed a reply that WHS would like five seats on the bus for two teachers and three students. In 30 minutes, every seat on the bus was filled. WHS was going to have the op-portunity to represent Utah. Three students from WHS, Baneza Montalvo, Esmeralda Arreola, and Mayra Rojas were selected to have this experience. The students worked very hard

to raise the money and make their dream occur. They succeeded in raising all the needed funds in the small time frame of the three weeks until we left. They were willing to work hard to make sure that the money came in. In fact, in one day, they walked door-to-door selling chocolates and sold 20 pounds of them. I kept getting a phone call that they needed more chocolates. Due to the nature of a space shut-

tle launch, we planned our trip to

include a few extra days in case the launch was rescheduled. With these extra days we took the opportunity to give Baneza, Esmer-alda, and Mayra a variety of educational ex-periences. We were able to go to Sea World, the Epcot Center, the Kennedy Space Center, the Astronaut Hall of Fame, and the Merritt Animal Refuge. In each of these excursions the girls learned tremendous amounts about subjects they had never been exposed to be-fore. Unfortunately, in the end the launch was postponed beyond the scope of our visit, but the trip was not wasted since the girls had many life-changing cultural and academic ex-periences. Our experience was greatly enhanced by

a journalist named Stephanie Donald who would have been the first journalist in space as she was the journalist selected to be the first journalist in space. However, due to the Challenger disaster the Civilian in Space pro-gram was dropped and she was unable to go. In spite of this setback, Stephanie spent her career as a journalist covering the space pro-gram, and, thus, knows more about the his-tory of the space program than almost any-one. She provided marvelous opportunities for us including a personal tour of the Ken-nedy Space Center and a chance to see the two launch pads at Cape Canaveral from a distance.

As a result of this trip, all of us learned so much. I am proud of these students who walked around taking notes, asking ques-tions, participating in all of the educational experiences, and taking pictures to document this opportunity while we were in Florida. It was thrilling to watch their excitement as they learned.

The following are the students’ re-flections of the trip.

Baneza Montalvo: The first day in Florida we went

to Sea World. We saw stingrays, dol-phins, killer whales, sharks, manta rays, and manatees. The second day in Florida we

went to Kennedy Space Center with Stephanie Donald, Cathy Collins, and Bekah J Collins. We got on a ride that simulates what it feels like to be in a shuttle launch. That ride was fun except it shook my cheeks too much. We also met Mitch Currah who helped the astronauts from Apollo 13 come back to Earth alive. Then

We want to begin by saying thank you to everyone who made this trip possible: Northrop Grumman, AFA Industry Associates, Three Utah AFA Chapters, Wal-Mart, Cargill Salt, Intrepid Potash, Joseph Chapman, Robert George, Mary Ann Hogsett, Darrell Kimball, Wendover Community, George Terra (Scentsy), Representative Ronda Menlove, Sun Lok Yuen Restaurant, Valley Mental Health, Wireless Beehive, Rocky Mountain Space Grant, Debbie Chapman, Dr. and Julia Holt. Thank you for helping us reach for the stars. You have made a huge difference.

we went to the Rocket Garden, where we saw and got in the Mercury Capsule. When I got in it, it was very small. I couldn’t stretch my legs. I saw the Titan II and Saturn V. I also got to see inside a full size replica of the shuttle. When I entered the shuttle I realized it was big enough for people to stand straight inside of it. We also went to the Astronaut Hall of Fame. In the Hall of Fame, I got to see a statue of Alan Shepherd. He was the first American in space. I saw his space suit, gloves, and hel-met in which he trained in. I saw and learned a lot of interesting things. The third day in Florida we went to Ep-

cot Center. My favorite thing we did in Ep-cot center was when we got on the Future Ride, also known as the BIG GOLF BALL. I like that ride because it showed you how ev-erything started from the beginning of time till present. The people they used in this ride looked so real. At first I thought they were hu-man beings, but as we got closer they weren’t. The fourth day in Florida we watched Apollo

13. I learned that when Apollo 13 was on their way to the moon both of their oxygen tanks blew up. So they had to go into the moon land-er, there was a problem with that. The moon lander was built for only 2 persons, but there were 3 of them in Apollo 13. Too many peo-ple caused too much carbon dioxide, which could lead them to death. So now Mitch Cur-rah the man we met in Florida and Ken Mat-tingly “the astronaut that was suppose to be on board with Apollo 13 that was not allowed to fly because he was going to get the mea-

sles, which he didn’t” came to the rescue. They started building a filter out of a square that would fit into a circle. Using materi-als only found in the moon lander. After that they had to turn off all the power, to make sure they had enough for re-entry. They made sure that everything worked in the simulator run by Mitch. Ken dis-covered a procedure of the order to turn

things back on to minimize power usage. He also discovered a way to take battery power from the lander back to the Apollo capsule. The whole world held their breath as they came back. If they were even a little bit off they would burn up and never come back to Earth. Apollo 13 made victory when they ar-rived home safely. This movie made me appre-ciate Mitch a lot more. He was up at least 21 hours a day until they were home safe. He was fresh out of college and only 23 or 25 years of age at the time. That average age of NASA engineers at that time was 25 because they thought ev-erybody else was crazy and went somewhere else to work. The most important thing I

learned was if you try hard you can accomplish anything you want to do. My advice to anyone is to try hard and never give up. Esmeralda Arreola: While I was in the U.S Hall

of Fame, I learned a little more about Buzz Aldrin. I personally met him this past sum-mer when I had an internship at NASA. He is a great guy who has an awesome sense of hu-mor. He was the second person to step on the surface of the moon. The first was astronaut Neil Armstrong. Both of these men were on the mission Apollo 11. Visiting the Kenne-dy Space Center and Astronaut Hall of Fame were my favorite because I got to learn about the history of NASA.

I saw the flag that symbolizes our progress in spaceflight program. It has reached space twice in the year of 1961 and 1995. Within that time 206 Americans left earth and 12 walked on the moon. PERHAPS later on this flag will be carried to Mars on it next voyage. It took ten thousand people to build the

Hubble telescope and while it was in space something was wrong with the mirror so they had to install contact lenses to fix the blurri-ness. In 2013, the James Webb Space telescope will see beyond the Hubble telescope. This telescope will a replacement for the Hubble and will consist of infrared-optimized equip-ment. The infrared region of the electromag-netic spectrum; electromagnetic wave fre-quencies below the visible range; “they could sense radiation in the infrared”. Electromag-netic radiation have wavelengths longer than visible light but shorter than radio waves. I had an unforgettable and education ex-

perience. It was disappointing not being able to see the shuttle launch but I learned things that were life changing. Overall, the most im-portant thing I learned was go after what you

want. Many things can happened if you strive for your goal. If I had the chance to do it all over again, indeed I would.

Mayra Rojas: On day two, the original day of the

launch when we first planned our trip, we went to Kennedy Space Center. When we arrived, we were all excited to see and learn about all this new stuff. We went to hear the

George Terra, Scentsy Distribu-tor, conducted a fundraiser to help the Wendover High students fulfill their dreams to attend a space shut-tle launch. He presented the check to students Baneza Montalvo, Es-meralda Arreola and Mayra Rojas with help from their teacher Caro-lyn Bushman.

The NASA Flag in picture was de-signed and created by WHS stu-

dent, Jamahl Middle-ton. It was taken up to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Astronaut Mag-nus’s 1.5 personal be-longings. It was flown when WHS students asked questions of As-tronaut Magnus in a twenty minute down-link carried on NASA television in January of 2009. The Wendover High Seniors desired

to Reach for the Stars and have As-tronaut Magnus to be their gradu-ation speaker. She was the speak-er and returned the flag to us. The flag launched on Shuttle Eneav-our November 14, 2008 then went on the ISS and returned to Earth on Discovery March 28, 2009. It was in space 134 days and traveled 50,304,000 miles.

astronaut give a talk. We also took a picture with him, Astro-naut James Reilly. Then we went to a ride that there is in Kennedy Space Center; it’s called Shuttle launch experience. It felt like we were actually on a shuttle launch. Then we went to see the rock-et garden. Yeah, I know it might sound weird but it’s a garden of pure rockets. It’s pretty cool. We also got to meet a hero, well a hero to me and to many other people. Why is he hero you ask me? He is a hero because he is one of the persons that helped get the astronauts of Apollo 13 (The Suc-cessful failure) get home. That is why he is a hero thanks to him he saved 3 astronauts. THANK YOU MITCH CURRAH. On the fourth day, went back

to Kennedy Space Center. We also got to go to The Astronaut Hall of Fame. We got to see a lot of awesome stuff. Baneza and I got to get on a ride that was sim-ilar to what you feel g-force like when you are on an airplane. It was really cool. We also got to see the memorial of the astronauts whom had died.

We went to a planetarium it was really cool to see and learn about the planets. We also got to see a show about the constellations and laser mania. What we learned about the constellations was re-ally cool, because after that we got to see Jupiter and four of its moons through the big telescope. It was really cool how we got to see Jupiter and how we were find-ing the constellations. Our last day we went to an

airboat ride. It was really fun and cold. We actually got to see only one alligator that we named George. Esmeralda and I got to try alligator meat but it was deep fried. It was good, yum.

We didn’t get to see what we wanted in the shuttle launch. However, we got to learn more than what we lost. I also learned that anything is impossible and that even the impossible is pos-sible, and to never give up. Also if you work as a team you can do anything and anything is possi-ble with team-work.
