The various gowns and hoods preserve the style of their medieval origin and indicate, by color and design, the degree and the institution by which the degree is conferred. Black is the basic color for gowns in the United States. The associate and bachelor’s gowns are distinguished by their long, open sleeves; the master’s, by its closed, slitted sleeves; and the doctorate, by its full sleeves trimmed with banks of velvet. The velvet on a doctorate gown may be black or a color denoting the field in which the degree is earned. A different cap can also be worn. An eight-sided velvet tam with a shorter, wider tassel depicts the doctorate degree. Academic hoods vary in length according to the degree and are lined with the colors of the institution by which the degree is conferred. The yoke of the hood is edged in a color that indicates the field in which the degree is taken.

The Deaconess tradition began in 19th century Europe. Theodore Fliedner of Kaiserswerth, Germany, established the first Deaconess Home and Hospital in 1836. The word deaconess means “one who is devoted to service.” Young, unmarried women were invited to join in the Deaconess Sisterhood to assist Fliedner with his mission. In 1851, Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, spent three months in Kaiserswerth training as a nurse for the sick.
In 1889, an Evangelical pastor concerned about the lack of healthcare in the St. Louis area proposed establishing healthcare services based on the Kaiserswerth model. On March 18, 1889, 60 men and 10 women became the first members of the Evangelical Deaconess Society of St. Louis.
The first Deaconess Home and Hospital was established near Union Station in 1889.
The following year, the School for Deaconesses was founded. Within a short period of time, the school established itself as a leader in nursing education. More than 500 Deaconess Sisters were consecrated to lifelong service.
In 1943, Deaconess School of Nursing began admitting lay students. By retaining the quality of care associated with the Deaconess Sisters, these registered nurses have gone on to hold prestigious positions both locally and nationally.
In 1983, Deaconess transitioned from a school of nursing to a college and began offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The Associate Degree in Nursing program designed for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) graduated its first class in December 1990.
At the start of the 21st century, Deaconess College of Nursing entered the world of online education. In the fall of 2000, a new option was initiated to allow registered nurses to earn their bachelor’s degree through online courses. In 2001, the College received approval to establish an online option for LPNs to earn an associate degree.
In March 2005, Adtalem Global Education acquired Deaconess. A term of the acquisition agreement required Adtalem to change the name of the school. The chosen name, Chamberlain, is derived from the Middle English word “chaumberlein,” which means “chief steward” – in recognition of the critical role of the nurse as the central steward and coordinator of patient care and the faculty and staff of Chamberlain College of Nursing as the chief stewards of their students’ education.
Chamberlain College of Nursing continues to innovate and expand nursing education. In 2009, Chamberlain began offering the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program, and, in 2013, began offering the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program, helping nursing professionals advance their education and enhance their nursing careers. Graduate certificate programs in Nursing Education and Nursing Informatics were launched in 2012.
In 2017, Chamberlain broadened its reach in healthcare education through the establishment of Chamberlain University and the launch of a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program within a new College of Health Professions. In 2019, began offering the Master of Science in Social Works (MSW) degree program further expanding the new College of Health Professions.
Chamberlain University builds upon the legacy of Deaconess and Chamberlain College of Nursing and fulfills a vision of extending the organization's mission to educate, empower and embolden diverse healthcare professionals who advance the health of people, families, communities and nations.
“I think it important the Committee should bear in mind to raise the standard, year by year.”

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program is a three-year*, full-time program offered on-site. This program incorporates general education and nursing coursework in a program of study that provides the knowledge and skills necessary for a lifetime of professional and personal growth. The emphasis on clinical experience, supported by theory from nursing and related disciplines, is the hallmark of the BSN curriculum at Chamberlain. Post-Licensure Options
RN to BSN Option
Chamberlain’s RN to BSN option allows registered nurses nationwide to advance their careers by earning a BSN degree online in as few as three semesters***. The program offers the flexibility of online learning, a focus on core concepts applicable to professional nurses and respect for previous work experience – all of which are important to nurses focused on advancing their careers while continuing to treat patients and do the work they love.
RN-BSN to MSN Option
In the RN-BSN to MSN option, eligible RN students completing their BSN degree at Chamberlain may apply for admission to the MSN program prior to completing their BSN degree. Students are able to complete their BSN degree while enrolled in the MSN program by taking selected MSN courses in place of two required BSN nursing courses. The MSN courses offer more focused, higher level content than the corresponding BSN courses. Students opting for this dual enrollment have the option at any time of completing the final two courses in the BSN curriculum and exiting the program with a BSN degree.
