Community LeadershipThe purpose of the Community Leadership Program is to

foster leadership potential in the community to ensure contin-ued growth and development in our region.

The Community Leadership program is a nine-month pro-gram from September through May. The program begins with an orientation, followed by monthly sessions studying specific topics. Topics will include: Leadership/Teamwork, Public Safe-ty, Agriculture/Media, Health Care, Education, Government/Economic Development, Simulated Society, and Community Problem Solving. The sessions are led by a combination of community leaders, professional facilitators, and specialists in the respective fields. This program is designed to provide in-sight into the challenges and opportunities that exist in Clarke and Frederick Counties and in Winchester.

The objective of the program is to develop the skills of the participants so they will be able to provide the leadership necessary to address community needs. We also strive to enhance an understanding of the complex issues facing the communities of Clarke and Frederick Counties and Win-chester through:

-Educational programs which broaden knowledge of the area and of the critical issues affecting this region

-Exposure to existing community leaders and to local gov-ernment structure, educational systems, businesses and orga-nizations.

-In depth exchange on current issues.Applications will be available in May. For more information: visit regionalchamber.biz or call Jody

Being one of the Board of Directors of the TVRC over the past two years has provided me with an abundance of ex-perience and has increased my network of local professionals and small business owners. By working for a major corpora-tion like Kraft Heinz you can sometimes miss out on what is truly occurring with the smaller business owners which are a major part of our striving community. By being a member of the Chamber I have learned how my company can better support the local businesses when possi-ble, as well as my participation has also allowed me to identify key resources in the community that have contributed to the overall growth and development

of my facility. To share an example, recently the Winchester Kraft Heinz

plant surpassed 4 million hours without a lost time accident, which is considered “world class” performance for a manu-facturing facility. This occurred through many reasons, one being the collaborative efforts of key members of the Win-chester Medical Center and my staff members to review and improve work practices where possible. We are really proud of our Safety record at Team Winchester!

To summarize my Chamber experience, it has been a posi-tive bridge for my professional and personal growth as I have become a more active member of the Winchester commu-nity. It has allowed me to meet and build some relationships that would not have occurred if I had not been a member.

The Top of Virginia Regional Cham-ber (TVRC) is essential to the economic growth of our communities; through making introductions, facilitating col-laborative projects, educating business professionals, and keeping abreast of pending development projects.

Since 1917, TVRC has served business-es by helping to create a business-friend-ly environment, promoting local busi-ness, and providing events and tools for businesses in the City of Winchester and the counties of Clarke and Frederick.

The Chamber works tirelessly to devel-op position statements that inform our legislators of the needs of our members. As a TVRC member, we invite you to partic-ipate in advocacy forums with local legislators, and attend our Public Policy Breakfast with Senator Warner on February 17 from 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. at Shenandoah University.

If you are a business professional you can’t afford not to be involved in the Top of Virginia Regional Chamber! Look at page 7 to see what educational opportunities are happening in our community.

Combining 80/20 & 90/10 RulesWhat choices do you make to maximize your life output

and reduce your input? The Pareto Principle, more commonly known as the 80/20

Rule, states that 80% of the output comes from 20% of the input. It suggests then that the goal we all should implement is to maximize that 20% and stop wasting our time on the ma-jority of the tasks we do on a daily basis because they do not assist us in achieving the best outcomes.

Comparably, Charles R. Swindoll said that “I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.”

I’ve been thinking about the convergence of these two principles and how to harness them to maximize satisfactory results, whether that is in work, home, relationships, health or spirit. -Suzan D. Herskowitz

I am privileged to say that I have had the honor of working with many business

owners and companies through my role as a Chamber Ambassa-dor since 1996.

As an Ambassador, the opportunity has allowed me to build business and per-sonal relationships through my employment at the Bank of Clarke County and many personal relationships through community outreach.

In my experience as a Chamber Ambassador I would be glad to meet with any member to discuss the benefits of being involved in the Chamber. - Joanne Lloyd
