Dr. Mitchell A. Porter ‘s death on the 10th of October 1825 was one of Montevallo’s first great tragedies. He was spending Sunday at his home near the intersection of Island and Shelby Street when his father in law, Mr. Reuben Wade, wanted him to look at some land for sale. Dr. Porter, being a devout Methodist, did not want to go, saying that nothing of a business nature should transpire on Sunday. An argument ensued, and Mr. Wade stabbed his son-in-law with a knife. Dr. Porter died the next day, a month before his 28th birthday.

His wife, Mary Margaret Porter, was the only witness to the murder. Feelings around the town were so intense that the trial was moved to Jefferson County. Mrs. Porter gave such an emotional account of the event, pleading for the life of her father, and yet, at the same time, defendingher husband for his participation in the fight. Her testimony led to her father’s acquittal. According to her son’s obituary, she and her children moved to Jefferson County three months after the event. Mr. Wade was defended by Shelby County lawyer Daniel Watrous, who was paid an enormous fee for his services.

Dr. Porter had come to the wilderness of Montevallo to join his uncle, Rev. Dr. Joshua West, to learn the medical profession. Dr. Porter’s parents were Mitchell Porter and wife Penelope West Porter, of Sevier County, Tennessee, and personal friends of Bishop Francis Asbury who came to America to spread the Methodist religion.

Dr. Joshua West and his wife Hannah Prentice West had left Sevier County in the winter of 1816 when the Methodist Church sent him to Shelby County to “ride the circuit” in what was then the Mississippi Territory. With them were Mrs. West’s brother, John Prentice and his wife Rhoda Lovelady Prentice. John Prentice is the namesake of the Prentice family of Montevallo today.

John Prentice’s ancestry is traced back to the early days of Williamsburg, Virginia. His ancestor William Prentice came to America as an orphan, and was indentured to a merchant. He married the merchant’s daughter, and the family prospered. John and Rhoda Prentice are buried with

tombstones next to the block building in the Montevallo Cemetery. The white Prentice men moved after the Civil War to Texas and to Rome, Georgia; the Prentice girls married here and their descendants (including myself) are still to be found.

One outstanding member of the African American Prentice family was Rev. Joseph (sometimes Josire) Prentice, for whom Prentice High School was named in the early 1950’s.He was an early advocate of education for Montevallo’s African American citizens. I do not know much of his personal history and achievements, but there are those in our community who do, and his story and life’s work should not be forgotten. When the Federal government abolished the dual school system, the name Prentice High School was lost and the building became Montevallo Middle School.

For some years now, I have been suggesting to anyone who would listen that the Prentice name should be restored to the location, and Montevallo Middle School should bear the name Prentice Middle School. I feel there would be no greater justice to the African American educators and students of Montevallo than to bring back the original name of someone who did so much to further the cause of education in our community. I believe a return to the name “Prentice Middle School” would be a step in the right direction.

CITY OF MONTEVALLO NEWS

Mayor’s Message...

Hollie C. Cost, Mayor

UNITY DURING ELECTION SEASON -- SERIOUSLY?YES, SERIOUSLY.

Serving as the Mayor of Montevallo hasbeen one of the greatest privileges of mylife, second only to raising our two incredible boys, Eli and Campbell alongside my husband, Andrew. While there have definitely been challenges along the way as mayor, I am deeply proud of my 16 years of service to the city. It has been awe-inspiring to work with so many of you to position Montevallo as a regional leader amongst progressive communities. Over a relatively brief period, I would venture to say we have made more progress than any community our size in the State of Alabama.

Just to enumerate a few successes - we completed a comprehensive and magnificent Main Street renovation, welcomed hordes of new businesses to town, upgraded athletic facilities, secured millions of dollars of grant funds, built a new city hall, developed an exemplary 167-acre park, overhauled our entire paving infrastructure, passed an ordinance to protect the rights of our LGBTQ community, supported a generation of youth in their rise to community leadership, rightfully acknowledged tragedies from our past, and are now hosting community conversations that embolden those whose voices are often lost. to experience these next four months as your mayor and join you on this journey.

It is because of our unique position in the state that I am imploring all citizens in Montevallo to look deep within themselves during this pivotal time in our history. Not to be too dramatic, BUT, I firmly believe we are on the cusp of facing the intersection of events that could rip us apart or forge stronger bonds than we ever thought possible. We are in the midst of a pandemic, surrounded by international civil unrest, with a local and national election both on the horizon, couched in an incredibly diverse community racially, economically and politically. If what I am seeing on social media and mass media is evidence of things to come, we could all be in a world of hurt. Politics is literally ripping us apart.

Even though COVID-19 does not discriminate between liberals or conservatives, citizens are demonizing those who protect themselves differently. Even though racial equality is just and legislated, there is a strong outcry to stifle the voices of those who need verification that Black Lives do indeed matter. Even though so many police officers give their lives to serve others, they are being stereotyped and demonized across the country. Even though there are beautiful, loving people on all sides of the political spectrum, liberals and conservatives alike are casting stones at one another based solely on whether they lean left or right.

To localize it a bit, as of this writing, there are two candidates running for mayor. I firmly believe they are both in it for the right reasons. They love Montevallo and want to contribute to it on the highest elected leadership level possible. Elections are inherently polarizing. It is right and just to support one candidate over another. So, here is the challenge that I am

putting before each and every citizen in Montevallo for our local election, the bigger one in November, your position regarding Black Lives Matters and even your positon on the pandemic-----PLEASE BE KIND. Be kind with your words. Be kind with your actions. Be considerate with your social media posts. Be the person your grandmother thinks you are. Rather than trying to thrust your values upon someone else, seek to understand their values.

Through your individual actions, Montevallo, in the geographic center of the state, can serve not only as a model community in economic development, the arts, diversity and sustainability, but we can also be seen as the civic model for peace and unity through dialogue, deliberation, kindness and consideration. I am incredibly grateful that I will be able to experience these next four months as your mayor and join you on this journey.

THE PROS AND CONS OF SWIMMING POOLSSusan Lehman, Team Lehman

Since the onset of the coronavirus quarantines, pool sales have gone up 75%. This can affect your decision about what house to purchase. If you’re in the market and are considering a pool, here are some things to keep in mind.

A pool can increase the value of a house, but only to buyers who want a pool. For every buyer that wants a pool, there’s one that doesn’t want to deal with the cost and effort of upkeep, the potential hazard to pets and small children, the expense of fencing off the pool and the increased liability insurance coverage.

To really enjoy the luxury and convenience of a backyard pool, you’ll have to educate yourself about how to manage the required chemicals and be diligent about skimming the pool and cleaning the filters. Once you’ve done that, there’s nothing like a dip in the pool on a hot day, a pool party or the healthy exercise and hydrotherapy benefits a pool can provide.

And while any pool will take up yard space, a properly decorated pool area is a beautiful sight and there’s just something uniquely calming about sitting by the water just passing time when you’re not swimming or tanning. If you have your own pool, you can do all these things on the spur of the moment rather than packing everything up and driving to some distant, crowded pool.

In the off season, just imagine how beautiful the pool will look with paper lanterns floating in it, carrying tea lights! It’s just the right atmosphere for an outdoor dinner or party.

So, if you’re the sort of person who enjoys a pool, the benefits are many and the upkeep is well worth it! Go ahead and dive into home (and pool) ownership!

H RUSTY NIX HFOR MAYOR OF MONTEVALLO

Civic and community service are an important aspect of good citizenship. With much thought and discussions with my family and citizens within the community, I have decided to run for Mayor of Montevallo. Montevallo has seen many positive changes during my twelve year tenure as the City Council representative of District 1 but there is still much work to be done. I believe that my experienced leadership along with my proven integrity, honesty and commitment gives me what it takes to help this community move forward while preserving the past.

Montevallo has been my home for forty four years and my family has lived, farmed and worked in our scenic town for over one hundred years. I am a 1981 graduate of Montevallo High School and attended the University of Montevallo, Auburn University and Bessemer State Technical College. I have been employed locally as a supervisor at Stella-Jones Corporation (previously known as Seaman Timber Company and Boatright Railroad Products) for over thirty-six years. Stella-Jones Corporation is one of the largest employers in our area and has a commitment to the environmental safety and community support of our city.

I began my journey to community service thirty one years ago by serving as a member of the Montevallo Industrial Development Board for nineteen years. I also served on the Board of Directors of the softball division of the Montevallo Youth Athletic Association for four years with, two of those years as President. I coached softball in our community for fourteen years and still enjoy and support our local youth and collegiate athletic programs.

As a member of the Montevallo Jaycees, I participated in many rewarding projects. These activities included Adopt-A-Mile, Orr Park Community Easter Egg Hunt, Little Cahaba Clean-Up Project, Main Street Trash Receptacle Project and the Shelby County Emergency Assistance “Santa’s Helpers” Project.

As City Councilman, I have served on the Montevallo Water and Sewer Board, Planning and Zoning Board, Parks and Recreation Board, Arbor and Beautification Board, Montevallo Trails Committee, Montevallo Historic Preservation Commission, Golf Board, Streets and Sanitation Committee and Health and Safety Committee. During my current City Council term, I have served as Mayor Pro Tempore. As your Mayor, I will continue to work with council members to provide residents with safe neighborhoods, new and exciting businesses, a thriving economy and top notch schools. I look forward to working with the Montevallo Chamber of Commerce and the Main Street Alabama initiative as it grows our main street area of town while continuing to support our business owners on the Hwy 25 corridor. The University of Montevallo, The American Village and The National Cemetery are unique features in our community that should be supported and promoted. I also believe in the “Shop Montevallo First” campaign and would like to see that effort revisited.

I am asking for your support and would like you to assist me in helping our community grow forward. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have and don’t forget to vote on Tuesday, August 25th, 2020. *RUSTY NIX FOR MAYOR* – Homegrown Roots, Proven Leadership. Honest Commitment. Common Sense, Strong Work Ethic

HUDDLE HOUSE CELEBRATES 15 YEARS OF SERVING MONTEVALLOby: Steve Gilbert

John Roper is no stranger to building and operating a business. “I started working with my Dad doing contract work on the UM Campus when I was teenager.” John said, over a morning cup of coffee at Huddle House. That was before histime in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. “I was assigned to crash and rescue and that led to me seeking further training as a fireman and medic. I have had multiple careers,” he added with a smile.

John has been involved in business in Montevallo most of his life. “We purchased the old Whaley Furniture building downtown in late 1988 or 89 and renovated it for our home and business. The family lived upstairs and we operated Montevallo Flooring on the ground floor until it was sold around 2004.” After selling the flooring business, John opened Huddle House on May 23, 2005. “Our first customer was the late Dr. Earl Cunningham. He would stop in from time to time as we were preparing to open, and was the first one there on opening day.” Fifteen years and thousands of customers later the Montevallo Huddle House is still serving meals 7 days a week. “We have a lot of regular customers, it is a pleasure to serve them and be a part of the community. We try to give back as much as we can, to the community that has supported us.” John said. Happy 15th Anniversary Montevallo Huddle House, I’ll have 2 eggs over medium with hash browns and coffee, please.

AN INTERVIEW WITH JOYCE JONES

Why are you running?

Joyce: I’m running because I love my city and I want to help continue the progress that we have made in making Montevallo the loving, inclusive, diverse, and progressive city it has fought so hard to become. Since I’m a native of this city, I know just how far we have come in the past 50 years. One of the things I believe most is that we are strong enough to admit the uncomfortable truths about our city. While Montevallo has a history of being tolerant of all citizens, it has not always been so equitable to all citizens. I care about the whole city, those who are already connected and those who feel left out, those who believe that our government is working fine for them and those who feel it is not. My goal for running is to say to all citizens you have a voice and your voice matters.

What community/civic involvement have you participated in?

Joyce: I have had the wonderful opportunity to serve on a few boards here in town: the Arbor and Beautification Board, the Library Foundation Board and, most recently, I am serving as the Chair of the Historical Preservation Committee. All of those appointments allowed me to serve with some wonderful folks from within our city. In addition, my husband and I work closely with NACA, a home buying program for first time or low-income homeowners. I volunteer with BackPack Buddies regularly and serve in soup kitchens and shelters on weekends. I spend summers helping and volunteering with youth programs that give children access to educational and dietary resources while they are out of school. I also stay engaged with social causes that are advocated by our local NAACP and work to help other candidates throughout our

sister communities in their pursuit of being elected to public service positions throughout Shelby County.

Why do you feel qualified to represent the City of Montevallo?Joyce: Over the last twenty years, I have worked in banking and database management, technology support and implementation, secondary education, and higher education administration support. I have managed budgets, I have managed resources and supplies, and I have managed people.

In a climate of such social unrest, Montevallo would benefit from having a leader who can not only manage budgets and staff but also one who cares about people. We need leaders who can inspire those feeling hopeless or helpless and who can galvanize those who are feeling energized to go out and change the world. I believe that I am that leader, one who is methodical and sober about the business of the city but also passionate and compassionate about the people of the city.

What is your hope for Montevallo?

Joyce: My hope for Montevallo is that we can find a way forward together. The thing that makes Montevallo so unique is the diversity of its citizens. I want that diversity to not only be the thing that makes us unique but also the thing that makes us strong! I believe good leadership will reflect the diversity of our community, not just in terms of race, but also of socioeconomic status, and faith, and lifestyle, and so much more. We have been well served by those who have come before us and my hope is to build on the strong foundation that has already been laid and to help us become better as we become One Montevallo.https://www.facebook.com/JoyceJones4Mayor/ The Committee to Elect Joyce Jones, 531 Tecumseh St., Montevallo, AL 35115

ValloCycleSUMMER CYCLING TIPS

With the first days of summer behind us, welcome the legendary southern sun by taking a break to ride outside. Follow these hot weather cycling tips to safely enjoy your ride as the mercury rises:

• Plan – choose routes with more shade and places to stop for a break, and always let someone know where you’re going.

• Timing – avoid riding during the hottest times of the day, usually between 10am – 4pm.

• Sunscreen – often underappreciated, the benefits are well known. But forgetting to apply before a ride will give you a burn worth remembering.

• Clothing – choose light and breathable clothing that will keep you cool and offer skin protection and don’t forget sunglasses.

• Hydrate – drink fluids before, during, and after your ride. Bring plenty of fluids with you, even on short rides.

• Electrolytes – In addition to water, replace electrolytes on rides longer than one hour.

• Pace – overexertion happens easier on a hot day, your body is spending more energy keeping itself cool.

• Recovery – plan on longer recovery periods during the summer months. Your body will take time to acclimate to the increased temperatures.

“Millions of television viewers will see the feed from this camera. It is great exposure for our community. This project is the culmination of many hours of conversations and planning. Working with Fox 6 meteorologist Wes Wyatt, the Chamber was able to help get the project completed” said Chamber Director Steve Gilbert.

NOT TOO LATE TO RESPOND TO THE 2020 CENSUS

As of mid-June, Shelby County has a response rate of 72.7 percent for the 2020 Census. Shelby County currently leads the state, however, there are several other counties who are trailing closely behind.

The 2020 Census will take place through the end of October. We challenge you to complete the 2020 Census. This will help to ensure crucial funding for our State over the next 10 years. Funding based on the Census generates $1,600 per person per year. In addition, our Alabama State representation in Congress could lose two seats if our Census tract falls.

Montevallo currently has a 61.8 percent response rate. Pea Ridge is 52 percent and Wilton is 58 percent. These numbers are a slight increase from 2010 Census, but we need you to do more. The information you provide can’t be shared with anyone. The data you give is confidential and secure.

Please encourage your neighbors, friends, fellow church members and work organizations to fill out the Census. There are a few ways to do it. You can go on line at www.2020census.gov or you can call 844-330-2020. You may also complete the 2020census at Montevallo’s Farmers Market. The County also has mobile kiosks available to be reserved for your scheduled activity or event to assist residents in completing their 2020 Census. If interested in reserving the mobile kiosks, please call (205) 670-6555.

BEDSOLE CANDIDATE FOR HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Russell Bedsole announces today his candidacy forAlabama House of Representatives District 49. Bedsole, a dedicated public servant, has 22 years of experience with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. He has also been elected twice by the citizens of Alabaster to represent Ward 5 on the Alabaster City Council. During his time of service, Alabaster has benefited from positive economic growth, a first-class school system, and a high quality of life. A conservative Christian candidate, Bedsole’s focus in the Alabama House of Representatives will be continuing to make District 49 a great place to live not only for his family but also for all its citizens. “I have spent many successful years with my family by my side serving my community and demonstrating the type of leadership the people of District 49 will appreciate,” Bedsole states. “I am patient enough to listen to those who have something to say, but bold enough to speak up for those who feel like they do not have a voice.”

Bedsole is pleased to stand up for conservative values. “I believe that life starts at conception, that the 2nd amendment should be protected, that our taxes need to be low and fair, and that our cities and counties need their fair share of infrastructure support,” he declared. Bedsole is dedicated to the service of the citizens of District 49. As the only current public sector employee serving on the current city council, Bedsole has been able to fight to enhance the benefits of Alabaster employees. As a House Representative, Bedsole will work to improve District 49’s infrastructure and traffic flow, increase economic development, and advance school systems.

Bedsole is raising his family, working, and worshipping in District 49. Now, he’s ready to represent his home in the Alabama House of Representatives. “I humbly ask for your vote on August 4th to allow me to serve District 49,” says Bedsole.

LITTLE FREE PANTRY IS WELL USED

“Take what you need, leave what you can.” That simple thought stands behind the Little Free Pantry at the corner of Oak and Plowman (in front of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and across from Montevallo High School). If you or your family are hungry, help yourself. If you have spare food, think about sharing. The Little Free Pantry, which looks like a miniature church, is always open.

Little Free Pantries have sprung up across the country as part of a grassroots movement that seeks to address hunger and food insecurity. The LFP movement describes itself as neighbors helping neighbors, offering a community solution to an immediate and local need.

Supplies are always welcome. Leave non-perishable food items (canned goods, dried milk, cereal, crackers, boxed pasta, and so on). Hungry? Just help yourself.

The Little Free Pantry is sponsored by St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and supported by the people of Montevallo.

SOUTHERN VINTAGE MARKET – MAKING NEW MEMORIES AND PRESERVING OLD ONESReprinted from “Alabaster Connection”

Mary and Walter Lee worked with her mother for over 30 years, who ran an estate sale business. They would purchase assets of a home like the furniture and such, and then sell it off piece by piece. These items sold would move on to make other families happy. After the Lees retired they decided to take a setp of faith and open their own antique shop - Southern Vintage Market. That was several years ago.

What really sealed the deal of opening their own storefront was when the Lees attended a going out of business sale. It was not uncommon for them to attend these sales for their estate business. But what transpired would their retirement plans. The company that went out of business served its community faithfully for 95 years and over time, they acquired many unique pieces of furniure. The Lees bid on and bought many items, but one piece really caught their eye. It was a 35 foot long and over 8 feet high display case that really stood out. It was the last item to be sold at this sale. The Lees knew they wanted it. So after a few rounds of bidding they won. The ocuple had no idea on what to do with the stunning case now that they owned it.

You will find yourself picking up small pieces that bring back memories from grand’s house. As you run your hands along a tabletop you will recall the table your aunt had at her home. And when you pick up a set of goblets you may even reacall a special day from your pastwhere you raised a tost in the honor of someone special.

Southern Vintage Market is full of memorable novelty items and prosaic items. Each with their own story. Each with a past. But because of Mary and Walter Lee, they each also have a future.

Visit Southern Vintage Market between 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday at 8111 Hwy 119 South, Alabaster (just one moile south of Publix)

As the Lees tell it they decided to open up Southern Vintage Market, if for no other reason than to have a place for this special item. And if you enter the store you can’t help but notice the dazzlling case. When you arrive you will also notice the vast collection of excellent furniture, tableware, and other home accessories all in various styles and prices.

She hopes to bring her 31 years of leadership in secondary education to the political arena in Montgomery. Strong, a Republic candidate, is a native of Shelby County. VOTE SONYA SWORDSCity Council - District 4

My name is Sonya Swords and I have been a resident of Montevallo for the past 20 years. I came to Montevallo to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from the University of Montevallo in 2000. By the time I obtained my degree, I had fallen in love with the town. I decided to marry and raise my family here.

I went on to obtain a Master’s of Education degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. While attending UAB, I was employed as a Paralegal in the Jefferson County Conservator’s office. We took care of financial affairs for hundreds of wards of the state.

Currently, I am an active real estate agent and a small business owner in Montevallo. For the last seven years, our business has provided an essential service to the people of Montevallo and generated income for the city.

My husband, Mike Swords, and I have two children, ages 8 and 13. Our son is involved in many sports at Montevallo Middle School and our daughter participates in youth activities. We have been involved in youth athletics for the last seven years.

I want to be a part of the City Council that will work together for positive growth in our community. I want to be a part of a City Council that can resolve, not only today’s problems, but can plan for a bright future. To do this, I need your vote. Please vote for Sonya Swords, District 4.

THE “BEST CLEANERS”

The name “Best Cleaners” is born of a family motto to try and be the best in all we do. A passion for public service, community, and striving to achieve standards that set us apart, is why John and Amber decided to take on the challenge of taking over the operation of Montevallo Cleaners. They also operate two other locations, in Helena and Alabaster.

Operating the Montevallo location for two years has been a challenge not only to the business but also due to the recent shutdowns because of COVID-19. John and Amber are greatful and thankful to continue to operate under these circumstances. Their survival has been a credit to their continued customer patronage and their dedication to their customers. Their ability to operate in Montevallo, has been due in part to their new partnership with Happy’s Variety Store on Main Street. The agreement with Happy’s Variety Store allows for daily drop off and pickup Monday - Saturday from 9am-5pm (808 Main Street). Without this partnership, it would have been difficult to remain in the area. “We are excited and ecstatic that Harriet has been so obliging, we think this is going to be a great new setup and are grateful to still be able to provide the community with dry cleaning and laundry services”.

Hailing from New York, John and Amber met here in Alabama through their work in public service for the City of Birmingham. They have lived here for more than 16 years. They have two children and reside in Hoover, AL.
