girL scOUTs sUrPAss cOOkie sALe gOAL Girl Scout Troop 224 would like to thank Montevallo and local businesses for all the support during our 2015 cookie sale season. During each cookie sale season the troop sets three goals; a personal goal, a service goal and an educational goal. This year, the personal goal was to sell 120 boxes of cookies each. The girls sold an average of over 160+ boxes each! The service goal involved raising funds to purchase supplies for 25 toiletry kits for SEA, the girls blew this goal out of the water. The educational goal, visit the Wild Animal Safari Park in June to learn about wild life conservation. On Monday 4/13, Troop 224 delivered over 40 toiletry kits to SEA. The kits included 20+ basic toiletries, men’s and women’s shaving kits plus children’s kits. Cynthia Pope and Monique Williams welcomed the troop and educated the girls on the mission and services of SEA.

In addition to community service projects, the girls have been busy earning badges. Most recently, Troop 224 earned the ECO-Hero badge touring Ebenezer swamp with Dr. Hardig and UM volunteers. The girls learned about native plants, animals and the swamp’s ecosystem. During the summer the girls will be working on their Bronze award, a community service project. The girls decided that they want to bring smiles to Meals on Wheels recipients and will be making placemats for Montevallo and Wilton meal recipients.

sPring cLeAning It’s that time again! This year let SEA help with your Spring Cleaning. Their truck is available to pick up gently used furniture, clothing, books and other household items. 2015 TOUr De cUre is JUne 13Th Two years ago Cindy Holsombeck, Montevallo’s assistant city clerk, knew something was wrong. She was experiencing blurry vision and unquenchable thirst. “The lightbulb clicked on and I knew I had it.” The “it” is type 2 diabetes, a disease that runs in her family. Her father and one of her brothers both died at age 49 with the disease, and her two remaining brothers have the disease, too. The diagnosis changed Cindy’s life—certain foods like orange juice and sweet tea are no longer on the menu, and she takes medicine to manage the chronic condition. She also now incorporates exercise into her daily routine. “I always walk to the restaurant I’m going to for lunch,” she says. “I’m a big walker. I also love to go dancing. I try to work in activity into social situations.” For example, she likes to go bowling with friends and take her nephew and niece hiking at Oak Mountain.

Cindy is also preparing to ride in the American Diabetes Association’s 2015 Tour de Cure, which takes place June 13 in Montevallo. The ride, which features multiple distances and even has an option for people to ride stationary bikes, raises money for diabetes research and awareness of the disease. “I rode 13 miles on the stationary bike last year, but I may go for 20 this year.” “Having diabetes is not fun,” Cindy says. “But it is a disease you can manage. You have a lot more control over it than people with other illnesses … with the right information and support, organizations like the ADA. That’s why I do the Tour de Cure to promote awareness and do a little fundraising.” Find out more about the Tour de Cure and support Cindy at www.diabetes.org/touralabama .

The race to summer has definitely begun at the Boys & Girls Club with planning almost complete and registration just beginning, Summer 2015 Boys & Girls Club style is less than a month away from our May 27th opening day. Weekly movies at the library, art & crafts, outdoor and gym recreation, swimming trips to UM (with lessons for those who need them) board and video games and of course DODGEBALL is just a bit of the fun which goes on from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day at our year-round site at the Montevallo Park & Recreation Building and at MES. In addition to a fresh twist on traditional favorites including sports, fine arts, science and other BGCA programs we have some fun new theme weeks scheduled. Hero Week is where we learn about and thank our hometown heroes and have some fun with our favorite super heroes… or maybe we’ll create our own! During Crazy Calendar Week we will celebrate Christmas in July, the Iron Bowl, and other member favorites and Real World Week will give members a taste of what it is like to earn a salary…and pay bills! Triple R Week will help us all reduce our carbon footprint as we learn to reduce, reuse, recycle AND recognize, refuse, and report bullying in all its forms. We are especially excited about two new parts of our summer program. First twenty rising 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders will SAIL into Summer Adventures In Learning, a United Way program designed to decrease the number of children who fall into the ‘summer slide’. The summer slide is when students do not retain knowledge or skills over the summer due to lack of using, improving, and building upon skills and knowledge learned during the school year. This along with our participation in the Parnell Library’s summer reading program, book clubs, daily brain challenges and other BGCA high-yield learning activities will have our members exercising their brains as well as their bodies all summer long! Beginning this summer we are delighted that we will be able to offer teens a wide variety of opportunities to gain new skills, learn new things, serve their community and just have fun hanging out with one another! Through a new partnership with the City of Montevallo, we will build on the foundation laid at the MARC (Montevallo Arts & Recreation Center) by the Montevallo Junior City Council by bringing national Boys & Girls Club programs designed for teens to this setting. The summer fee for teens is $100 and their site will be the Scout Hut which will open at 12:30 and close at 6. Teens who need a place to go in the morning are welcome to join our older members at our Year-round Club for an additional fee of $100. If requested, the fees can be paid in installments. Call 665-4466 for more information.
