Here's a look at New Year rituals from around the world.

Bengali: In Bengali, they use flour to paint patterns on the ground in front of their houses. In the middle of the design, they

place an earthenware pot filled with holy water, vermilion, and a mango tree branch, which must have five twigs and a number of leaves. The pot symbolizes good fortune for the family.

Brazil: The lentil is believed to signify wealth, so on New Year’s Day Brazilians serve lentil soup or lentils and rice.

Denmark: It is a good sign to find your door heaped with a pile of broken dishes on New Year’s. Old dishes are saved year round to throw at the homes of friends. Many broken dishes are a sign you have many friends.

China: The Chinese New Year takes place between January 21 and February 20. Every front door is adorned with a fresh coat of red paint, symbolizing good luck and happiness. The whole family prepares a feast for the New Year, and all knives are put away for 24 hours to keep anyone from cutting them-selves, thought to cut the family's good luck for the next year.

England: The British place their fortunes for the coming year in the hands of their first guest. They believe the first visitor of each year should be male and bear gifts. Traditional gifts are coal for the fire, a loaf for the table, and a drink for the master. For good luck, the guest enters through the front door and leaves through the back. Empty-handed or unwant-ed guests cannot enter first.

Greece: A special New Year's bread is baked with a coin bur-ied in the dough. The first slice is for the Christ child; the second, for the father of the household; and the third, for the house. If the third slice holds the coin, spring will come early.

Germany: In Germany people drop molten lead into cold water and try to tell the future from its shape. A heart or ring shape means a wedding; a ship, a journey; and a pig, plenty of food in the year ahead. People also leave a bit of every food eaten on New Year's Eve on their plate until after midnight as a way of ensuring a well-stocked larder.

Chamber Website Statistics

Every year, the Belgrade Chamber keeps track of how many hits each page on its website re-ceives. We do this so we know what pages are the most popular. Through the year, it is also interesting to see what pages receive the most hits. The chart below show a comparison of each quarter between last year’s hits and this year’s hits. For the most part, we are seeing more and more traffic to the different pages.

The directory and events pages receive a lot of traffic and have continued to grow in the num-ber of hits they receive. That is why Chamber members can purchase banner ads on these pag-es, which is a new addition to the many advertising opportunities offered by the Belgrade Chamber. If you would like to put a banner ad on one of these pages, contact the Belgrade Chamber at 388-1616 or Kim at [email protected]. Only 5 ad spaces available on each of these pages and several are already sold!

January 2014 Page 7

Dear Members:

I am truly excited for 2014 to start. So many good things are hap-pening, and 2014 will be a time of change and promise for Belgrade.

Ted Barkley, the new City Manager, is going to bring excitement, energy, and knowledge to the city. He is very community minded so I am sure we will see him at many Belgrade Chamber functions. I looked forward to working with him on an Economic Develop-ment Plan for Belgrade.

The East Belgrade Interchange has really started to take shape, and we will see even more progress in 2014. The access to the south will not only give us connection to all of the subdivisions but will also allow us to expand commercially!

I see a bright future for our business community. I hope we will all pull together for the greater good of Belgrade. Although the inter-change construction will cause delays, we must keep a positive attitude with our customers and citizens and remind them how great it will be when it is all done. The relief to Frontage Road is much needed, and access to the south for emergency vehicles and to lessen truck traffic on Main St. will create a better atmosphere for shoppers and city traffic. Truckers will have a safer, more con-venient way to move around the valley.

Not that we don’t have some work ahead of us, as we need to be proactive on signage and marketing at the airport as well as clean-ing up the two major entrances to the city. The Belgrade Chamber will be forming a task force to tackle these issues, and everyone is welcome to bring their ideas. This is our chance to really make a positive impact on our community. Look for the task force to start meeting in January.

Happy 2014, let’s make it a year to remember!

New Year’s Traditions (continued).

Hungary: Hungarians burn effigies known as “Jack Straw” on New Year's Eve to repre-sent the evils and misfortunes of the past year.

Norway: Norwegians make rice pudding at New Year's and hide one whole almond within. Guaranteed wealth goes to the person whose serving holds the lucky almond.

Sicily: An old Sicilian tradition says good luck will come to those who eat lasagna on New Year's Day, but woe if you dine on macaroni, for any other noodle will bring bad luck.

Spain: In Spain, when the clock strikes midnight, they eat 12 grapes, one with every toll, to bring good luck for the 12 months ahead.

Wales: At the first toll of midnight, the back door is opened and then shut to release the old year and lock out all of its bad luck. Then, at the twelfth stroke of the clock, the front door is opened and the New Year is welcomed with all of its luck.
