CHALCOT WEEKLY
SCHOOL VISION
Chalcot Lodge Primary School empowers all
students to embrace learning, achieve their
personal best and build their emotional, social
and physical well-being.
STAGED RETURN TO SCHOOL
As was communicated earlier in the week via COMPASS, we will be implementing a staged return to
school for our students.
In the first stage, students in Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 will return to our school from Tuesday 26th May.
To support all school staff to prepare for this transition, Monday 25th May will be a pupil-free day.
In the second stage of our return to on-site schooling, all other year levels will return to school from
Tuesday 9th June.
For those students who cannot be supervised at home and vulnerable children, the existing model of on-
site schooling will remain in place during the two-week period from Tuesday 26th May to Friday 5th June.
The current process that we are using to enable parents and carers to indicate the days or part-days for
which on-site schooling is required will continue for this two-week period.
All other students in these grades and year levels will continue learning from home until Tuesday 9th June.
Once a year level has returned, all students will be expected to attend school as normal. This means if you
choose to keep your child/children home after their year level has returned to on-site schooling, we can no
longer support their learning from home.
This does not apply to children who need to be absent for health or medical reasons. For those families,
please contact us so we can make an appropriate plan.
This same approach is being taken by all government schools in Victoria.
To support the health and wellbeing of all our students and staff, our school will continue an enhanced
cleaning routine and will encourage frequent hand washing.
If you child is ill or is feeling unwell, they must not attend school. They must remain home and seek
medical advice.
While the Chief Health Officer has advised that students will not be required to maintain physical
distancing at school, there will be a number of important changes to our school operations, consistent with
health advice. This will apply until further notice. I will provide more detail about our local school context
as soon as possible, but it is important to note that changes will include:
adjusted arrangements for drop off and pick up, including staggered school start and finish times;
restrictions on access to the school site for anyone other than immediate school staff and students;
the way we conduct parent-teacher meetings and interviews
We understand that some families may feel anxious about this move back to classroom teaching and
learning. I can assure you that this decision has been taken on the basis of the best health advice available
to our state.
More information about the return to school and coronavirus (COVID-19) can be found on the
Department’s website, which will continue to be updated:
https://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/department/Pages/coronavirus.aspx
Thank you for your continued support and patience during this time. We look forward to welcoming our
students back to the classroom.
Assessment – Semester 1 Reports
In order for teachers to continue our ongoing assessment schedule in preparation for Semester 1 reports,
over the next two weeks they will be assessing students. Your class teacher will give you a detailed outline
of what that may look like for your child later this week.
We anticipate that reports will be ready to be accessed via COMPASS sometime in the last week of this
term. A more precise date will be provided over the next few weeks.

3 Tips to Boost Emotional Health in Children
Like all of us, children want to feel good. And like all of us, that's a challenge - they disagree with their
parents, siblings, and friends, they may miss out on the team or things may not quite go their way. As
children experience these situations, it is our responsibility as parents to teach them how to handle these
emotional reactions and develop intelligence.
What does emotional health look like in children?
An emotionally healthy child is aware of their emotions and equipped with the skills and strategies to deal
with them. Remember, emotions can be both positive and negative.
Three ways to model positive emotional health
More effective than sharing theory. If parents show their children positive emotional health habits they are
likely to develop them in their own lives.
1. Speak about emotions Help children to understand and talk about their emotions. Being able to identify anger or frustration
allows children to let it go easier.
2. Be honest about your feelings If you're struggling or have had a hard day, don't be afraid to say "today has been hard. I need to take a
few deep breaths before we continue". This shows you are learning too and will encourage them to do the
same
3. Use calming strategies Emotionally healthy children are equipped with strategies to calm their emotional reactions. This may
include breathing exercises, visualisations or setting aside a "quiet space" in your home for them to use.
FUN AT HOME - FUN LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN
These activity ideas are provided for parents to use with their children at home and provide fun, stimulating
activities that can be used as described or adapted and built upon as desired.
The quality learning tasks are mostly self-directed, meaning children can do it by themselves, and are
generally open-ended and can be interpreted by children of differing ages to suit their own
capabilities/strengths. Enjoy and have fun! https://fuse.education.vic.gov.au/Pages/funathome
ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY
Education Day- STEM
During this week, your class will be completing Assessment Tasks, so teachers can begin to prepare your
reports. Your class will complete these tasks on one day next week. You will be given a time to log in
with your teacher and complete the assessment tasks. When you are not signed in for assessment, your
teacher will have fun and engaging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) activities set
for you to complete independently at home. You may also like to dress the part and dress up as a wacky
and wonderful scientist! We would love for you to upload photos to your teacher to see your amazing
costumes, problem solving skills and learning.
Or you may also like to take a photo to share with the school and send to

POLICY: ASTHMA
INITIAL COPY DRAFT/REVIEW
14/5/2018 13/5/2020
Purpose
To ensure that Chalcot Lodge Primary School appropriately supports students diagnosed with asthma.
AIM
To explain to Chalcot Lodge Primary School parents/carers, staff and students the processes and
procedures in place to support students diagnosed with asthma.
Scope
This policy applies to:
all staff, including causal relief staff, contractors and volunteers
all students who have been diagnosed with asthma or who may require emergency treatment for
asthma and their parents/carers.
IMPLEMENTATION
Asthma
Asthma is a long term lung condition. People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs which react
to triggers, causing a ‘flare-up’. In a flare-up, the muscles around the airway squeeze tight, the airways
swell and become narrow and there is more mucus. This makes it hard to breathe. An asthma flare-up can
come on slowly (over hours, days or even weeks) or very quickly (over minutes). A sudden or severe
asthma flare-up is sometimes called an asthma attack.
Symptoms
Symptoms of asthma can vary over time and often vary from person to person. The most common asthma
symptoms are:
breathlessness
wheezing (a whistling noise from the chest)
tight feeling in the chest
persistent cough
Symptoms often occur at night, early in the morning or during/just after physical activity. If asthma is well
controlled, a person should only have occasional asthma symptoms.
Triggers
A trigger is something that sets off or starts asthma symptoms. Everyone with asthma has different triggers.
For most people with asthma, triggers are only a problem when asthma is not well controlled with
medication. Common asthma triggers include:
exercise colds/flu
smoke (cigarette smoke, wood smoke
from open fires, burn-offs or
bushfires)
weather changes such as
thunderstorms and cold, dry air
house dust mites moulds
pollens animals such as cats and dogs
chemicals such as household
cleaning products
deodorants (including perfumes,
after-shaves, hair spray and aerosol
deodorant sprays)
food chemicals/additives certain medications (including
aspirin and anti-inflammatories)
laughter or emotions, such as stress
Asthma Management
If a student diagnosed with asthma enrols at Chalcot Lodge Primary School:
1. Parents/carers must provide the school with an Asthma Care Plan which has been completed by the
student’s medical practitioner. The plan must outline:
the prescribed medication taken by the student and when it is to be administered, for
example as a pre-medication to exercise or on a regular basis
emergency contact details
the contact details of the student’s medical practitioner
the student’s known triggers
the emergency procedures to be taken in the event of an asthma flare-up or attack.
2. Parents/carers should also provide a photo of the student to be included as part of the student’s
Asthma Care Plan.
3. Chalcot Lodge Primary School will keep all Asthma Care Plans:
in the first aid room Medical Register
in the classroom with students medication
in the class Displan folder.
4. School staff may also work with parents/carers to develop a Student Health Support Plan which
will include details on:
how the school will provide support for the student
identify specific strategies
allocate staff to assist the student
5. If a student diagnosed with asthma is going to attend a school camp or excursion, Chalcot Lodge
Primary School parents/carers are required to provide any updated medical information.
6. If a student’s asthma condition or treatment requirements change, parent/carers must notify the
school and provide an updated Asthma Care Plan.
7. School staff will work with parents/carers to review Asthma Care Plans (and Student Health
Support Plans) once a year.
8. Student asthma kit
All students diagnosed with asthma are required to have a student asthma kit at school which contains:
their own prescribed reliever medication labelled with the student’s name
their spacer (if they use one)
Student asthma kits will be stored in their classroom.
Asthma Emergency Response Plan
If a student is:
having an asthma attack
difficulty breathing for an unknown cause, even if they are not known to have asthma
School staff will endeavour to follow the Asthma First Aid procedures outlined in the table below. School
staff may contact Triple Zero “000” at any time.
Step Action
1. Sit the person upright
Be calm and reassuring
Do not leave them alone
Seek assistance from another staff member or reliable student to locate the student’s
reliever, the Asthma Emergency Kit and the student’s Asthma Care Plan (if available).
If the student’s action plan is not immediately available, use the Asthma First Aid as
described in Steps 2 to 5.
2. Give 4 separate puffs of blue or blue/grey reliever puffer:
Shake the puffer
Use a spacer if you have one
Put 1 puff into the spacer
Take 4 breaths from the spacer
Remember – Shake, 1 puff, 4 breaths
3. Wait 4 minutes
If there is no improvement, give 4 more separate puffs of blue/grey reliever as above
(or give 1 more dose of Bricanyl or Symbiocort inhaler)
4. If there is still no improvement call Triple Zero “000” and ask for an ambulance.
Tell the operator the student is having an asthma attack
Keep giving 4 separate puffs every 4 minutes until emergency assistance arrives
(or 1 dose of Bricanyl or Symbicort every 4 minutes – up to 3 doses of Symbicort)
5. If asthma is relieved after administering Asthma First Aid, stop the treatment and observe the
student. Notify the student’s emergency contact person and record the incident
Staff will call Triple Zero “000” immediately if:
the person is not breathing
if the person’s asthma suddenly becomes worse or is not improving
if the person is having an asthma attack and a reliever is not available
if they are not sure if it is asthma
if the person is known to have anaphylaxis

The blue or blue/grey reliever medication in the Asthma Emergency Kits may be used by more than one
student as long as they are used with a spacer. If the devices come into contact with someone’s mouth, they
will not be used again and will be replaced.
After each use of a blue or blue/grey reliever (with a spacer):
remove the metal canister from the puffer (do not wash the canister)
