A FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS ~ Sunday, Dec. 4 Celebrate the magical holiday season with your SSC friends and family at Rocky Ridge Park! The trail meanders through 400,000 Christmas lights, spectacular displays, animated holiday scenes, a G-gauge train display, an impressive syn-chronized musical light trail and five enclosed, heated pavil-ions. Snacks befitting the occasion will be available for pur-chase. Visit Rocky Ridge Christmas Magic’s website at http://www.yorkcountyparks.org/chmagic.html. We’ll meet at 5:30 pm at the display entrance to see if we qualify for group rates before paying. Regular admission costs: adults - $8; seniors (60+) - $7; children ages 4-12 - $6; children under age 4 - free. Groups: 12+ adults - $7 each. After enjoying all the displays we’ll proceed to Texas Road-house on the York Galleria Mall premises, which is located within minutes of the park, for whatever strikes your fancy. Rocky Ridge is located 1.5 miles north of Route 30 off Mount Zion Road (3699 Deininger Rd.). Contact Melody Pat-ton at [email protected] or at 717-741-6055 with any questions.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS COACHES NEEDED January 2012

Since 2002, SSC has partnered with the York Ski Club to as-sist the York Area Special Olympics skiing program. We typi-cally have about a dozen athletes (teens and young adults) and we try to have at least two coaches per athlete. We have a few new athletes who would like to learn how to ski this year, and we’ve had to put at least one on a waiting list because we’re not sure if we’ll have enough volunteer coaches.

We’ll ski at Roundtop on Thursday evenings starting Janu-ary 5. You don’t have to commit to every week, but the ath-letes (and the coordinators!) appreciate some consistency. Philip Durgin will contact last year’s volunteers to deter-mine their availability. New volunteers (we need you!) should contact Phil at [email protected] or 717-732-5325 to obtain a volunteer application form. The Special Olympics program requires a background check and a short online training course, so contact Phil ASAP. You only have to be an intermediate skier to coach, and Roundtop donates the lift tickets, so come join the fun! Many of our athletes are great skiers and they all love to ski!

HUNTER-WINDHAM, NY ~ Jan. 22-24, 2012 Hunter and Windham are blasting their snow guns to get ready for opening day on November 18. This $365 pp/do trip package includes round-trip bus transport from the Harrisburg area, lodging at the Kaatskill Mountain Club and 3 days of skiing (2 days at Hunter, 1 day at Windham). We have to turn back any unsold rooms by December 15, so contact me NOW if you want to come along!! Send completed trip application plus your check for payment in full made payable to “SSC” to trip leader Priscilla Hooper, 741 Collina Drive, Lewisberry, PA 17339. SKIER DEVELOPMENT NEWS Happy December, SSC Members! In preparation for the 2011/2012 Snow Season, Steve Vedder, SSC’s Skier Development Coordinator, has lined up two programs to help ready all riders (novice through expert) for this year's adventures in downhilling. The topics for these presentations will be (1) selecting the proper equipment including initial set-up, tuning/maintenance of equipment, and adjustments that can be made to equipment for a personalized fit, and (2) the benefits of instruction, utilizing proper riding technique, the use of beginner and advance riding techniques, and being able to adjust your equipment to fit your riding style. These presentations are slated to take place during the January and February Membership Meetings. This year’s Skier Development Program is also going to include a “Group Ride/Ski Night”. To date, we are planning to hold the Group Ride/Ski Night on Thursday nights at Roundtop. Stay tuned; more details to follow in subsequent newsletters and email blasts. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Membership Meetings, social events, and out on the Hill. It's going to be a great season to be a SSC'er! Powder to the People!!
