We have invested in state of the art laboratories and made fi ve new appointments in engineering, in addition to other investments by the University in the general area of industrial biotechnology. This Chair is intended to strengthen our position, enabling us to establish a world-leading Centre in Biocatalytic Manufacturing.

HistoryNottingham has a long history shrouded in drama, mystery and myth. From the world-famous outlaw, Robin Hood, to three literary giants, Lord Byron, D H Lawrence and Alan Silitoe, the city’s heritage is made of legends. Nottingham Castle, the Lace Market and the city’s network of underground caves are all famous historical attractions.

EventsNottingham is a city bursting with year-round events and activities for everyone to enjoy, whatever the season: fairgrounds, foreign markets, festivals, outstanding fireworks displays, cultural celebrations, music events and even outdoor ice skating. Notable events include Goose Fair, The Robin Hood Beer Festival, Riverside Festival and the Christmas Market.

SportThe county is also home to an impressive range of major sports teams and first-class facilities. Nottingham is home to two professional football clubs, Nottingham Forest and Notts County as well as its own rugby club. The famous Trent Bridge Cricket ground is just outside the city centre as is the The National Water Sports Centre whilst the National Ice Centre resides in the heart of the city.

ShoppingNottingham is in the UK’s top 10 shopping destinations according to a 2010 retail survey, and with over 1,000 shops the reason is clear.

You will find an array of high street shops and good department stores in the city centre. The Victoria Centre and Broadmarsh Centre offer hours of indoor shopping. If designer chic is what you are looking for Nottingham’s Lace Market area has a number of designer outlets to offer, including Vivienne Westwood, Kurt Geiger and of course local designer Paul Smith. Nottingham also boasts a rapidly growing vintage scene. The historical area of Hockley offers a range of boutiques and independent outlets selling vintage and alternative garments, retro furnishings and vinyl records galore.

DiningBeing a culturally diverse city Nottingham has a lot of choice when it comes to eating out. There is a vast array of exciting foreign foods including Caribbean, Malaysian, Japanese and Greek cuisine. In Hockley and the Lace Market you will find many alternatives to mainstream coffee shops including Lee Rosy’s tea rooms and The Walk Cafe. There are also some highly awarded restaurants on offer in the city centre including World Service, Harts and Michelin starred Sat Bain’s.

Engineering at NottinghamEngineering at Nottingham is one of the strongest engineering faculties in the UK with all departments recognised as being amongst the best in higher education. An engineering degree from The University of Nottingham, whether from the UK or Asia, is a statement of skill, innovation and quality.

TeachingOur teaching strategy is to develop graduates who have a thorough grounding in their subject of study, are aware of research, have a critical approach to knowledge, can study independently, and have the skills and attributes to be successful in employment. We are particularly keen to ensure that our students have a well-balanced programme of lectures, tutorials and seminars. Laboratory work is an intrinsic part of our undergraduate degrees and is highly valued and enjoyed by our students. The concept of engineering as a design discipline is fostered, and students often work on live projects set by industry or on projects which benefi t society, particularly for developing countries.

Our students are taught by academics who are leaders in their fi elds of research enabling them to engage creatively with new and exciting ideas; an advantage which is acknowledged and valued by employers world-wide.

The Faculty of Engineering has adopted a clear, long-term vision of investment in its people, research and teaching, and is keen to support activities which have the potential to grow, and to deliver an influential amount of world-class research and knowledge transfer which addresses global issues and challenges. Key amongst these activities are the University’s priority groups where staff in the faculty are leading in key areas such as: aerospace, advanced manufacturing, energy, and sustainable chemical and biological processing.

We are continuing to invest in our world-class infrastructure, to support talented people and to develop partnerships with industry, funding bodies and government agencies, to create an exemplary environment where discovery, scholarship, innovation, commercial exploitation and public engagement thrive.

New developmentsThe Energy Technologies BuildingThe £9 million Energy Technologies Building is set to become the UK’s most advanced research facility into new energy innovations and offers an extensive range of novel features, including the Wolfson Prototyping Hall; a 400 m2 and 12 m high testing facility allowing energy efficiency testing of full-scale building exteriors and features. The building also boasts a climate chamber, and an additional 200 m2 of external space open to the elements where tests can be carried out in real-time weather and daylight conditions, plus a hydrogen production and refuelling station.

The building itself has been designed to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding rating, the highest level for environmental sustainability with building design with low energy cooling and heating systems. A bio-fuel CHP generator will generate up to 150% of the total annual electricity requirement. The building will also produce more heat than it requires and the surplus will be directed to a neighbouring building.

The building was formally opened by Vice-Chancellor, Prof David Greenaway in October 2012 with keynote speeches from Steve Holliday, Chief Executive of National Grid and Dr Tony Cocker, Chief Executive Officer of E.ON UK.

Aerospace Technology CentreNottingham alumnus John Rishton, Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce, opened the new £5.1 million Aerospace Technology Centre at the University’s Innovation Park in October 2012. The centre will help to secure the University’s position as one of the leading institutions in the world for research into aerospace technologies.

The centre enables researchers to develop, integrate and demonstrate new technologies at a scale and complexity not currently possible within any other research institute in the UK.

The centre is at the heart of the Institute for Aerospace Technology which brings together a number of internationally leading research groups involved in work on aerospace materials, advanced manufacturing, more electric aircraft, aero engines and propulsion and aviation operations.

The University’s aerospace research portfolio amounts to over £50 million which includes over £20 million in funding from the EPSRC. Many of the world’s biggest aerospace businesses work with the faculty, including Rolls-Royce, GE, Airbus, EADS, Boeing, BAE Systems, GKN and Goodrich. In addition, staff are also working with many SMEs which play a key role in the aerospace supply chain.

Engineering and Science LibraryThe George Green Library, located in the heart of the faculties of engineering and science will see an £18 million investment in building refurbishment and extension which will almost double the existing space. Work is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

Shanghai Nottingham Advanced Academy (SNAA)The University is developing a partnership agreement with East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) to jointly deliver courses and training in University priorities areas including aerospace and green technology.

The Biorenewables and Bioprocessing GroupThis newly established and expanding group specialises in applying fundamental discoveries in the biosciences and chemistry to develop products, materials and processes of the future. The group aims to develop innovative processes and materials to exploit renewable feedstocks, including wastes. The group is funded by the UK Research Councils and industry, and has superb, newly equipped laboratories. The group is truly interdisciplinary, including chemical engineers, biologists and chemists, and collaborates with internationally leading groups in the UK, Europe and the USA.

Chair in Biological EngineeringThe University of Nottingham has an outstanding international reputation for research in bioenergy and sustainable chemistry, and has recently established a new Biorenewables and Bioprocessing Group in the Faculty of Engineering. The University is also a world-leading centre for synthetic biology in clostridia and in yeast/fungal genetics, physiology and biotechnology. Thus, Nottingham has a leading position in sustainable chemicals manufacturing, encompassing both chemical and biocatalytic approaches.

The new chair is intended to strengthen this position, to build a world-leading Centre in Biocatalytic Manufacturing, specialising in biorenewables. The new post is funded by The University of Nottingham and is accompanied by a generous start up package.

The new appointee will join the Biorenewables and Bioprocessing Group in the Faculty of Engineering. The group is expanding rapidly, with five new appointments made within the last 24 months. The new post advertised will continue this rapid expansion. The group has new, state of the art laboratories for research on biocatalysis, including equipment for microbiology, enzymology, molecular biology, chemical analysis and fermentation. The group is funded by BBSRC, EPSRC and industry.

The purpose of the role will be to advance the discipline internally and externally to the University, to engage academe with the practice and to provide academic leadership for the discipline in the Faculty of Engineering. The role entails the design, delivery, supervision and assessment of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; the soliciting, execution and dissemination of research, nationally and internationally; the provision of advice, support and encouragement to colleagues and students and a contribution to the strategic management of the department, and, as required, by the University.

Key selection criteriaApplications are invited for the above post based in the Faculty of Engineering, building on chair and lecturer appointments within the last two years. The faculty is highly multidisciplinary, and wishes to build a world-leading centre for research and teaching in biocatalytic manufacturing, specialising in biorenewables. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in any of the following areas: applied biocatalysis, synthetic biology/metabolic engineering, metabolic modelling, directed evolution, metagenomics and/or biocatalytic reaction engineering.

Candidates must have a demonstrable commitment to interdisciplinary working, and should have qualifications in chemical or biochemical engineering, or relevant biological or chemical sciences.

Candidates should have a substantial record of publications, a proven ability to attract research funding and demonstrable experience of leading research groups. The person appointed will be expected to undertake a leading role in the development of the University’s research programmes and strategic direction.
