Mr. Utterson, a prominent lawyer from London was going through his documents and found that if Dr. Jekyll was to die, his entire estate is to be passed over to Mr. Hyde. Utterson was suspicious. Utterson then visited Dr. Lanyon, his old pal. It turned out that before their professional dispute, Jekyll and and Lanyon were friends. Lanyon never hear of Mr. Hyde. After their hang out, Utterson started to have nightmares about Hyde. He stalked Hyde’s house and finally they met. Utterson was totally repulsed by Hyde’s terrible manners and appearance. Utterson thinks that Jekyll is being blackmailed by Hyde. Jekyll denies about the accusations and told Utterson to drop the issue during the party.

The story then shifts to the future. A maid was sitting in her window and saw a sweet old gentleman asking a young man for directions. The young man was Hyde. Out of no where, Hyde beats up the old man with a walking stick. The old man died; and maid fainted. When the maid woke up, she called the police. The old man who was recognized as Sir Danvers Carew had a letter on him addressed to Utterson. Utterson offered the police to Jekyll’s house but they were unsuccessful on finding Hyde.

The setting is during the Late nineteenth Century in London. The main places where this novel takes place in the chapters is Mr. Utterson’s House and Dr. Jekyll’s House

With this atmosphere I think of older darker times with some fog to give it a creepy atmosphere which I believe goes well with this twisted story

“And here, for a moment, the fog would be quite broken up. and a haggard shaft of daylight would glance in between he swirling wreaths” p. 29

● Dr. Henry Jekyll- wealthy, handsome middle aged doctor. He alienated his close professional friends like Lanyon because of his experiments concerning the dual nature of mankind.

● Mr. Utterson. He narrates the story. He is a very prominent lawyer in London. He is a friend of Dr. Jekyll and he suspects something weird is happening between Hyde and Jekyll

● Mr. Hyde- Dr. Jekyll’s alter ego. He has no conscience and commits several violent acts.

● Dr. Lanyon- Dr. Jekyll’s closest friend of many years; Lanyon and Jekyll split up due to arguments over scientific ventures.

● Mr. Poole- Jekyll’s servant

3rd Person Limited-The story is mostly told from the perspective of an external unbiased narrator that commentates on the events of the story from the perspective of Mr. Utterson.-This deviates in the Chapter 4: The Carew Murder Case when the perspective changes to the maid who gives an account of the Carew murder.-It’s important that the point of view in this novel is limited to the perspective of only a few characters in a non-homogeneous way because if we knew the point of view of all the characters the story would not be interesting (we’d know what’s going on with Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll!).

POV

Page 8: Ch. 2-4 Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hydemtdp.weebly.com/uploads/1/9/5/4/19544697/e12h-_jekyll_and_hyde...suspects something weird is happening ... curiosity to find out what happened

Why is the point of view important?-It’s important that the narrator for Chapter 2-4 was coming from the perspectives of Mr. Utterson and the maid because the limit on perspectives maintains the suspense of the mystery of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Is the narrator trustworthy?-We must assume that the narrator is truthful and unbiased because the narrator would have no motive to not be (he is simply an outside commentator), and because there is no evidence to show that the narrator is untrustworthy, or trying to actively describe the events as they unfold untruthfully.

POV

Page 9: Ch. 2-4 Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hydemtdp.weebly.com/uploads/1/9/5/4/19544697/e12h-_jekyll_and_hyde...suspects something weird is happening ... curiosity to find out what happened

Curiosity - The driving force behind these chapters. Mr. Utterson is driven by curiosity to find out what happened to his dear friend Dr. Jekyll and who this mysterious Mr. Hyde is.

Good vs. Evil - Mr. Utterson views Dr. Jekyll as a pure, good, kind man who can do no evil, which is why he so desperately wants to help him. He doesn’t offer the same treatment to Mr. Hyde because he’s the opposite of what Dr. Jekyll represents. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are basically battling the other for control this whole time. What Mr. Utterson doesn’t know is that these two are the same person, just with different “personalities”.

Horrific, mysterious, gloomy, fearful, ominous, disbelieving, dramatic, shocking, and questioning.● The section was full of questions and wonders as to why such a great will

would be given to a horrid man.● Events: the fact that Dr. Jekyll is willing to relinquish a will to an odd

individual, beating of Sir Danvers Carew with a “weapon” that was given to Dr. Jekyll as a gift from Mr. Utterson, the lab found in Dr. Jekyll’s home, the authority Hyde has on the servants of Dr. Jekyll--all with permission of Dr. Jekyll, Jekyll’s refusal to speak about Hyde, and the horrific truth of a dream that Mr. Utterson endured.

Quote: “The fog still slept on the wing above the drowned city, where the lamps glimmered like carbuncles and through the muffle and smother of these fallen clouds, the procession of the town's life was still rolling through the great arteries with a sound as of a mighty win” page 22

This quote contains similes, metaphors and personification that describes the setting (London) after Dr.Jekyll learns from Poole that a letter never came by post. The letter was a key component to this chapter because Mr.Hyde wrote it and Dr.Jekyll was the writers benefactor. (Figurative language)

Stylistic Devices

Quote: “ Such unscientific balderdash, added the doctor, flushing suddenly purple, would have estranged Damon and Pythias.” Page 16

Lanyon is talking about Jekyll in this quote. He foreshadows how Jekyll is messing with experiment that he should not be messing with, and the outcome we get from it. (Foreshadowing)

Quote: “Mr. Utterson had already quailed at the name of Hyde; but when the stick was laid before him, he could doubt no longer; broken and battered as it was, he recognized it for one that he had himself presented many years before to Henry Jekyll”

This can easily be described has flashback, Mr Utterson was the one that gave the cane to Jekyll and that was used to has a weapon in the Carew murder case.

Diction: “ Although a fog rolled over the city in the small hours, the early part of the night was cloudless, and the lane, which the maids window overlooked, was brilliantly lit by the full moon. It seems she was romantically given, for she sat down upon her box, which stood immediately under the window, and fell into a dream of musing.” page 17. The word choice in this paragraph gives the gloomy tone and feeling to the scene that's about to happen.

Syntax: “you know me: I am a man to be trusted. Make a clean breast of this in confidence; and I make no doubt I can get you out of it.” page 16. This is a distinct use of syntax, the short sentences shows the powerful and concise manner between the characters

“If he be Mr. Hyde, I shall be Mr. Seek.”-This quote is the best quote ever.-It has an awesome Liam-Neeson-worthy wordplay on the name Hyde.-It creates a sense of suspense as to what exactly Mr. Utterson will exactly do.

-Will he intend malice on Mr. Hyde or just to learn more about Hyde?-It marks a transition in the book in which the author starts setting up the action after building up the setting and characters.-It’s also ironic in retrospect because he’s not really seeking Mr. Hyde, but rather Dr. Jekyll.

“Mr. Hyde was pale and dwarfish, he gave an impression of deformity without any nameable malformation, he had a displeasing smile, he had borne himself to the lawyer with a sort of murderous mixture of timidity and boldness, and he spoke with a husky, whispering and somewhat broken voice; all these were points against him, but not all of these together could explain the hitherto unknown disgust, loathing and fear with which Mr. Utterson regarded him.”

Steve Buscemi = Mr. Hyde

Mind = Blown

-The importance of this quote is that it gives the first actual description about the appearance of the mysterious Mr. Hyde.-The brilliant aspect about this quote is that it sets a broad framework for what Mr. Hyde might look like, but it lets the readers paint in the ambiguity about the appearance of him. (ie Steve Buscemi).-This quote also indirectly gives a hint as to what the strange case between Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll is when it states “he gave an impression of deformity without any nameable malformation.” through the irrational disgust that Mr. Utterson has after his meeting with Mr. Hyde.

“Things cannot continue as they are. It turns me cold to think of this creature stealing like a thief to Harrys bedside; poor Harry, what a wakening! And the danger of it; for if this Hyde suspects the existence of the will, he may grow impatient to inherit.”-The importance of this quote is that it underscores a suspenseful thought about the future of the novel as a whole: Might Hyde kill Jekyll for his inheritance?

-This ends up being partially true with Hyde being the cause for his death.-The quote also questions the relationship between Hyde and Jekyll. Mr. Utterson can not rationally expect Mr. Hyde or Dr. Jekyll to be the same person, so its interesting to see in retrospect quotes like these with speculation that Mr. Utterson puts forth regarding the relationship between Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll.

The cold-blooded beating of Sir Danvers Carew given by the mysterious Mr. Hyde can be compared with Spider Man, where Peter Parker’s uncle was unfortunately killed by a criminal trying to escape authority. In both cases, the innocent elderly men were brutally killed by odd-minded people.
