ESTABLISHING A COVENANT

When writing a group covenant, you will want to consider identity issues (who we are); task issues (what we do); communication issues (how we interact); and role issues (who does what.)

CONNECT GROUP LEADER SKILLS

Page 8: CG Leaders Upgrade Session 1

UNDERSTANDING GROUP DYNAMICS

STAGE 1: Exploration Unity at the expense of Diversity

• The primary focus of the group is building community. The group will not grow if it does not come together into a unified loving fellowship of believers. • Plan activities and lessons in a way that the group gets to know each

of its individuals in a deeper way.

Page 9: CG Leaders Upgrade Session 1

UNDERSTANDING GROUP DYNAMICS

STAGE 2: Transition Diversity at the expense of Unity

• Moving from establishing community to building strong disciples and sharing God’s love in Christ with the world.• Community is a key structure that the group learns and grows in with

an ability to focus on spiritual maturity• As the group experiences God’s blessing, it will start to want to share

that blessing with others.

UNDERSTANDING GROUP DYNAMICS

STAGE 3: Action Unity alongside DiversityIn theory, mature groups need never move to the final stage of group life. If the group is able to multiply, and then the new groups are able to continue multiplying within 2 years, one can effectively creature mature groups without having to bring those groups to termination.

Page 11: CG Leaders Upgrade Session 1

UNDERSTANDING GROUP DYNAMICS

STAGE 4: Termination/Multiplication Affirming Unity, Bringing a group to an end of forming new groups

Nonmultiplying groups lasting more than one or two years should be the exception, not the rule.

CREATING A HOLISTIC MEETING SCHEDULE• 30mins: Gather together / Dinner / Fellowship• 30mins: Intro & Recap• 30mins: Discussion/Application• 30mins: Sharing & Prayer

Page 13: CG Leaders Upgrade Session 1

PLANNING LOGISTICS

• A Location that iso Convenient,o Accessible, and o Reasonable.

• A Space that is o laid out to maximize communicationo minimize distractions – phone calls, pets, unruly children

• Other Considerationso Who will handle refreshments? What parameters? (one desert, serveral drinks, potluck each

week?)o What frequency shall the group meet? When to take breaks?

Page 14: CG Leaders Upgrade Session 1

ASKING GOOD QUESTIONS

• Ask open-ended questions starting with what, why, how, and so on.• When you ask a question, pause to allow answers. Don’t fill empty

space too quickly.• Before you “get into” Bible study, ask a few opener questions (based

on people’s past, present, or future) that will help people (a) get to know each other and (b) prepare to study the text.

Page 15: CG Leaders Upgrade Session 1

SHARING GROUP CARE

• Maintain contact during the week through prayer partners, email, whatsapp, phonecalls, etc.• Pray for each member regularly, especially during intense times of

hurt and pain• Listening (when appropriate) and offering sensitive advice in relation

to the stressed and past hurts that may be shared• Celebrating special days (birthdays, anniversaries, and group

milestones)• Sharing resources or providing help during crisis

PREPARING FOR FUTURE GROWTH

“Community is and must be inclusive. The great enemy of community is exclusivity.” The Different Drum: Community Making and Peace by Simon & Schuster

• “I just need this group for me; let’s not invite others in.”• Exclusivity becomes a mindset that creates mind games, rejection and a host of other subtle

gestures within groups themselves.• The best antidote for exclusivity is an intentional group understanding that each member of

the group exists in ministry within the group, and for ministry outside the group.

Having a Group Co-leader or Group Apprentice also prepares for future growth!

FREEDOM TO FALL GRACEFULLY

12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one

thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Therefore let us, as

many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to the

degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind. Philippians 3:12–16
