A NEW ERA OF PHILANTHROPY

For 30 years the Central Minnesota Community Foundation, along with its partner foundations in Alexandria, Brainerd and Willmar, have fueled positive change, transforming today’s goodwill into tomorrow’s legacies. In the beginning Alex Didier, the founder of the Central Minnesota Community Foundation (CMCF), believed that if they created a community foundation, generous people would come forward to give back to their local communities. George Torrey, as Board Chair in the 1990’s, believed that the CMCF should extend that dream beyond the boundaries of Greater St. Cloud to support the Brainerd, Willmar and Alexandria areas. More recently, Dennis Gregory, immediate CMCF Past Board Chair and Brian Myres, who chaired the CommunityGiving task force, believed the Foundation needed to create the right structure to sustain these partnerships and possibly create new ones. This past year the time was right to make a strategic decision on how we continue to grow now, and in the future.

CommunityGiving was born.CommunityGiving unites the Alexandria, Brainerd, Willmar and the Greater St. Cloud areas under a single framework to create efficiencies that maximize donors’ impact. This partnership of the four communities is built on three core values: respect for the autonomy of each of the partners, a focus on economies of scale to achieve greater operating efficiencies and a willingness of all partners to collaborate with one another. CommunityGiving will allow us to do whatwe do even better — help donors achieve their charitable goals and ensure their legacies are remembered for generations to come. We envision a family of thriving communities that will find inspiring ways to turn goodwill into great success stories.

As we look to the future we are excited for this new era of philanthropy and the impact this collective foundation will have on communities we serve.

DEAR FRIENDS,

During orientation, we often ask new Board members to pause….and think about the future. We ask them to reflect 30 or 50 years down the road and think about what the future of the community and the community foundation might look like. We ask them to think about the potential that the Foundation might have 30 or 50 years down the road to impact the lives of the people living in the community. We ask them to think about the donors and fund holders and the legacies the Foundation might hold.

This past year the Central Minnesota Community Foundation passed one of those 30-year milestones. Gathered at the River’s Edge Convention Center, we honored those visionaries and donors who took a risk and established the Central Minnesota Community Foundation in 1985. Their vision ignited philanthropy in the greater St. Cloud area and beyond. As of the close of the last fiscal year, their vision had resulted in:

w A Foundation with total assets in excess of $112 million w 650 component funds w $6.1 million in annual grantmaking to non profit organizations w 4 core affiliate foundations operating in 4 regional centers of Minnesota

And last year, the board of the Central Minnesota Community Foundation along with its partners in Alexandria, Brainerd and Willmar imagined a new umbrella structure — CommunityGiving — to further grow and develop philanthropic resources.

As of April 1, 2015 the new organizational entity — CommunityGiving — will serve as a common back room to create efficiencies for the Alexandria Area Community Foundation, the Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation, the Central Minnesota Community Foundation and the Willmar Area Community Foundation. Each Foundation will be led by a local Board of Directors and gain economies of scale and efficiencies by partnering with CommunityGiving.

We are not absolutely certain what the future might hold, but we do believe 30 years from today the collective work of all the Foundations will be greatly impacting the lives of people in the communities we serve. Under the brand of CommunityGiving, we will be working together to Engage Donors, Connect Resources and Build Community. Thank you so much for your generosity and support!

Sincerely,

Maryanne Mahowald, Board Chair Steve Joul, President & CEO

Difference Maker Grants The Alexandria Area Community Foundation (AACF) awarded two Difference Maker Grants in the past year to further the essential work of these key organizations dedicated to enriching the local community. These grants support local organizations fulfilling their important missions and help foster a better community for everyone. The Runestone Museum Foundation was granted a $10,000 matching grant to help with the restoration of Big Ole, the “icon” of the Alexandria and Douglas County. The project will include fully repainting the statue.

The Alexandria Senior Center was granted $20,000 to expand the nutrition services program to accommodate the increasing number of aging and vulnerable residents in Douglas County. The project will include finishing the kitchen upgrades for energy efficiency, food storage, air quality improvements and add additional service routes with volunteer drivers.

The Alexandria Area Community Foundation looks to provide leadership, financial support and make connections that go beyond the grant to advance the overall good of the community.

MAKE A MARK IN YOUR COMMUNITYLeave a legacy.

Randy Fischer was a man who made a mark in Alexandria. He was an entrepreneur, a real estate broker, an investor. He believed in his product and in the community, and he worked relentlessly for both. As Paula Jackson, a real estate colleague, describes him, “He was a non-stop ball of energy.”

Randy died unexpectedly on November 18, 2013 while on a trip to China with his wife Janet. Faced with his loss and the necessity of making a decision about memorial gifts, Janet took Paula’s suggestion that a fund in Randy’s honor be established at the Alexandria Area Community Foundation. Community members responded generously, and Janet now has a fund that she can use to help others.

Randy and Janet were both originally from the area — Villard and Evansville — and after Randy’s four years in the Marine Corps, they married and settled in Holmes City. Seven years later they moved to Alexandria. The area was a perfect place to settle as Randy had a passion for the outdoors — hunting, fishing and just being outside. After 16 years of marriage, they decided they wanted children; first Boone and then Mitch were born. The boys, now 20 and 18 years old, developed the same passion for the outdoors and the four of them hunted and fished together. That love of the outdoors led to some of Randy and Janet’s volunteer activities — Ducks Unlimited and others. Randy’s slogan was God-Family-Country.

Randy was a philanthropist — he and Janet gave to people in immediate need and most often, this was done anonymously. He was a patriot and believed strongly in supporting veterans. Another sign of his compassion was that he loved working with first-time home buyers, helping families find an affordable and appealing residence.

His death has left a hole in the local real estate world and the Alexandria community, but with the Randy Fischer Legacy Fund, he will long be remembered.

Randy was a philanthropist — he and Janet gave to people in immediate need and most often, this was done anonymously.

FOSTER PHILANTHROPYGive back locally and beyond.

Fueled by a passion for education and medical science, and an admiration for veterans, Lee and Penny Anderson of Nisswa have been selected as the Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation’s

2015 Award in Philanthropy recipients.

Each year, the Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation celebrates the generosity of the community and recognizes individuals who have fostered passion and vision for philanthropy in the Lakes Area through its Annual Award in Philanthropy.

Lee Anderson is owner and chairman of APi Group, Inc., the parent company to over 40 fire protection, industrial and specialty construction companies located throughout North America and the United Kingdom.

While the Andersons have chosen several local organizations to benefit from their personal involvement, they are extremely active on a national scale. Some of the organizations to which they have provided substantial support in recent years include St Thomas University, Saint Paul; Breck School, Golden Valley; United States Military Academy at West Point, New York; Boston Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts; and the Defender’s Lodge at the Palo Alto Department of Veterans Affairs Hospital in California.

The Brainerd Rotary Foundation Fund

Rotarians are neighbors, friends and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world.

The Brainerd Rotary Foundation Fund was established at the Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation in 2014. The Rotary Fund directly impacts youth in Pre-K through 12 located in the Brainerd Lakes Area through grants.

“The Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation is a well-managed option for investing our Foundation dollars,” says Mike Burton, Rotary Foundation Fund Committee member.

The club relies on private donations and the success of annual fundraisers to fund charitable programs in the area and around the globe. The Rotary Foundation looks to primarily fund projects that are meaningful in addressing critical issues.

Establishing their Agency Fund at the Brainerd Lakes Area came about through research by the Brainerd Rotary Foundation Committee for all area options. Rotary Foundation Fund Treasurer Roy Hurin explained, “We see it as a partnership with the community because the BLACF is a local entity that has the capacity to professionally manage all of their investments. We don’t need an Investment Committee to make important financial decisions. We use our time and talent to grow our fund and to support special projects in our community.”

ATHENA AWARDAnn Cofell

Demonstrating excellence in the legal profession for the past 35 years, Ann Cofell holds the position of Deputy Director of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid

(MMLA). She represents clients and mentors young attorneys and is continually passionate about making Central Minnesota a safe and just place for women and young girls. “We see Ann as a woman who takes initiative, who is innovative, who excels through collaboration, and above all, has compassion that has driven her to be a tireless advocate for others” said Lisa Maurer, chair of the Women’s Fund ATHENA Award Committee.

Ann played a significant role in establishing a partnership with the Stearns County Domestic Violence Court to provide safety for domestic violence victims. As a leader of this initiative, Ann has dedicated herself to educating individuals and communities about how this court works and how it has helped many women and families.

Ann also serves on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters Central Minnesota, and volunteers extensively in the community and at her church.

CMCF Celebrates 30 Years of Philanthropy in Central Minnesota

This past year marked the 30th anniversary of the Central Minnesota Community Foundation. Thirty years ago, our founder Alex Didier called together a group of community leaders to bring to life a community foundation in St. Cloud. He believed that the generous people of our community would come forward to give back to their local community and Alex was right.

The CMCF Annual Dinner on September 24, 2015 was an evening of reminiscing, recognition and honoring all those who have pursued philanthropy through our organization and made a difference in the community. CommunityGiving president Steve Joul remarked during the occasion “Tonight in our hearts, we remember those who have left us. And we honor them by ensuring their legacies make a difference today and for years to come.”

The Central Minnesota Community Foundation now looks to the future and the continued opportunity of connecting donors and their legacies with causes that make a difference in Central Minnesota.

ann is continually passionate about making central minnesota a safe and just place for women and young girls.

bill and joyce coborn

CREATE A CULTURE OF GIVINGSet an example for others to follow.

When Bill Coborn passed away in 2001, his oldest child Mark wanted to honor the memory of his dad, Bill, and mom, Joyce, who passed away in 1995. Bill and Joyce were part of the third generation of the Coborn family who owned and operated the Coborn’s retail stores. A culture of supporting employees has always been a hallmark of Coborn’s, and Bill and Joyce modestly

exemplified that tradition through their many years affiliated with the company.

One of the ways Bill and Joyce encouraged employees was in furthering their educations. Bill’s son, Mark, remembers working as a teenager at the Sauk Rapids store in the late 1970s when he came across an example of his parents’ support of education. One of Mark’s co-workers at the store, a bright girl who had recently graduated high school but hadn’t gone on directly to a post secondary school, told him she had engaged in a lively debate with Mark’s dad about furthering her education. She went on to say that Bill told her if she enrolled in school and passed all her first term classes, he and Joyce would pay her tuition. Mark never forgot the impression this conversation made on him.

Mark decided to establish the Bill and Joyce Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2003 to honor his parents and carry on a tradition of supporting employees particularly in the area of education. The informal, quiet way Bill and Joyce helped out employees and their families was becoming increasingly difficult as Coborn’s grew in to a multi-store, multi-state operation with thousands of employees. So Mark partnered with the Central Minnesota Community Foundation to set up the scholarship program. Employees and their families are eligible for the program. Since its inception, 155 students have received scholarships. This year the program will be granting ten $1,000 scholarships.

“I am very grateful that I have had the opportunity to establish the scholarship program to honor my parents and support Coborn’s employees and their families. The Central Minnesota Community Foundation has been a great partner and made it easy for me to offer this program. It is efficient, effective and impactful.”

INSPIRE PHILANTHROPY IN OTHERSBe a leader for your generation.

Along time teacher, Elaine Adams knew the importance of community and helping ignite leadership in future generations. She understood the power of philanthropy and answered the call to make a catalytic gift of $50,000 to seed the Willmar Women’s Fund and leverage a match from the Otto Bremer Foundation. Elaine was the recipient of the Marv Otto Award for her generous contributions

in the Willmar area.

Elaine desired to inspire philanthropy in others and took special delight in seeing local women step into roles as philanthropists. Elaine was a generous supporter of the Willmar High School, Ridgewater College, St. Scholastica College and the Willmar Area Community Foundation.

Elaine grew up in Norway, MI and Iron Mountain, MI, graduating from Iron Mountain High School in 1932. She moved to Minnesota to attend the College of St. Scholastica, in Duluth, majoring in Mathematics and graduating cum laude in 1936. Upon graduation, she returned to Michigan to teach elementary school for four years. She returned to Minnesota, settling in Willmar with her husband, Harry Raymond “Ray” Adams, who was an employee of the Great Northern Railroad. Ray died in 1968 in a railroad accident.

Elaine taught all levels of mathematics for over 50 years, teaching in Kerkhoven and Clara City, most of her teaching years in Willmar. She developed new courses, especially to teach basic math skills and earned a reputation as ‘everyone’s favorite teacher, even if you didn’t like math.’ She earned a Master’s in Mathematics from St. Cloud State University and took additional classes towards her doctorate degree. She retired in 1979.

In 2001 she married Eldred “Al” Beckman and they spent summers in Minnesota and winters in Florida. They moved to Paynesville in 2006 and became involved in the community. Elaine passed away in January 2014 at the age of 98 and only then was the full measure of her generosity made clear. She had left estate gifts to over 20 organizations and non-profits that she cared deeply about and left an indelible legacy that exceeds her lifetime. Thank you Elaine for the lives you have touched and the lessons you have taught us all about the power of one person to make an enormous difference in the lives of many.

AWARD IN PHILANTHROPYBob and Patti Dols

Bob and Patti Dols of Willmar received the 2015 Award in Philanthropy for their charitable support and volunteer leadership towards a wide array of

efforts within Kandiyohi County.

Since joining Northern States Supply in 1972, Bob has played a key role in promoting economic and business growth in the region, dedicating years to the expansion of Highway 23 into a four lane road between Willmar and St. Cloud. He has also served on numerous non-profit and economic development boards that align with his personal passions of keeping jobs local and providing a high quality of life for those in the Willmar area.

Patti is a retired educator, serving as the principal of Roosevelt Elementary School in Willmar for over a decade. She continues to advocate for children’s issues via the Willmar Children’s Cabinet, as co-chair of Empower: Women in Leadership and as chair of the Willmar Public School Foundation board. Patti also serves on the board of the Southwest Initiative Foundation and helps several local arts organizations.

bob and patti give countless hours to charitable support and volunteer leadership towards a wide array of efforts within kandiyohi county.

ESTABLISH A FUND

Donors can use a variety of assets — including appreciated stock, real estate and cash — to make gifts. They may give to any of the funds listed on the following pages, or may establish their own named funds through an Acorn Fund, which builds to a minimum of $20,000 before paying out grants, or with a minimum gift of $20,000.

There are nearly as many different kinds of funds at the Community Foundation as there are donors, since each fund may be customized to meet a particular charitable goal. There are, however, several general types of funds that donors may select from when choosing to make a gift to the Community Foundation. Currently the Foundation has more than 600 component funds of the following varieties.

A DESIGNATED FUND is designed to support one or more specifically chosen charities. If a charity changes its mission or type of services, or goes out of business, the Community Foundation directs grants to a similar organization. In this way, the donor supports the organizations he or she chooses, but ensures that the gift will remain relevant over time.

A DONOR ADVISED FUND allows the donor to participate directly in the grantmaking process by making recommendations for grants to specific organizations from the fund. A donor advisor also may work closely with the staff of the Community Foundation to select grant recipients.

When a donor desires to establish a fund for a specified, broad purpose, a FIELD OF INTEREST FUND is the appropriate choice. Donors with particular issues of concern — children’s services, the environment or helping the poor, for example — may focus their giving by setting up this type of fund. The Community Foundation then makes grants to meet current needs in the specified field.

A donor may establish a SCHOLARSHIP FUND to honor a loved one or simply as a way to assist young people with their education.

An UNRESTRICTED FUND is one of the most flexible ways to give, since it may be used for any purpose approved by the Foundation’s Board of Directors. This fund allows the Community Foundation to identify community needs and award grants designed to address those needs.

AGENCY FUNDS have been established at the Community Foundation by nonprofit, tax exempt organizations who appreciate the Foundation’s fund management expertise. Some of the funds are permanent endowments, and some act as a reserve fund for the nonprofit organization.
