2012 - 2013 Annual Report
Gearing up for the future
Message to the coMMunity
This past year has been particularly busy at your local hospital. We have made special efforts to continue to improve the quality of care you receive and the peacefulness of the environment on our campuses in which you receive that care. We believe striving for con-tinual improvement in these two areas will allow us to meet the mis-sion of CFVH for years to come.
We are in the middle of implement-ing a major electronic information system (Epic) that promises to streamline your care both in Sanders County and when referrals are needed to tertiary centers. This is one of the largest and most comprehensive changes CFVH has had to navigate in its history. Our staff has tackled the task with enthu-siasm; driven by the desire that implementation of Epic on August 3 of this year will be as easy for our patients as possible, and more importantly, will improve overall patient care.
This past year saw us hire five new providers including Dr. Ronald Black whose presence will allow us to continue to provide obstetrical services with Dr. Jeanne Williams and myself. After 19 years, Al Shear retired from Hot Springs. We miss him greatly but are excited that Nasreen Keyl, PA-C decided to join our team to serve the residents on the east end of the county from our new Hot Springs Fam-ily Medicine building. Robin Williamson, PA-C, Brian Rick, PA-C, and Frank Towsley, PA-C, all joined our ER team. With their ad-dition chances are you will see a familiar face when you are in need of ER services.
Dramatic changes will occur in healthcare in the coming 12 months. The Affordable Care Act will have a great deal of influ-ence on the industry. Many of you are understandably anxious regarding these changes, so CFVH plans to develop educational outreach for our communities. We are committed to do our part to make the changes as easy as possible for you.
Since 1971, CFVH has focused on delivering Quality Care Close to Home and over the years you have allowed us to serve you; our Sanders County com-munities. One constant in the way we will continue to do business is to maintain our commitment to do the best possible for you...after all, we are caring for our Families, Friends and Neighbors.

message to the community
The Clark Fork Valley Hospital Foundation is an organization whose only charitable purpose is to support Clark Fork Valley Hospital and its related entities fulfill their mission to Sanders County residents. It has provided nearly $200,000 in donations over the past five years.
In 2012 the Foundation donated $15,000 towards the purchase of industrial grade exercise equipment to outfit the new Pulmonary and Cardiac Rehabilitation Service lines that will start this Fall.
To facilitate projects like these, the Foundation conducted two fundraising efforts in 2012; a Gala event in March and the Golf Classic in September. The Gala featured The Boomer Boys (a singing group from Polson) with a review of music from the ‘40s to the ‘60s in addition to an evening of food and fun at the Sanders County Pavilion for over 70 attendees. The Golf Classic, which was in its 5th year being sponsored by McGowan Grocery, was held on Sunday of Labor Day weekend and hosted 65 golfers for the day. Tremendous support from local businesses helped make it a successful tournament and over $12,000 was raised.
Each year the Foundation seeks opportunities to fund hospital projects and services that are not covered in the budget for the year. Your tax-deductible donation does make a difference. Past purchases have saved lives and enhanced the care the hospital can provide.
Please give thoughtful consideration to making an investment in the health of your friends, family and neighbors this year by placing a donation in the enclosed envelope.

Salaries, Benefits and Contract Labor comprise approximately two thirds of the hospital’s total operating expenses. Clark Fork Valley Hospital is the largest employer in Sanders County. When salary dollars are spent locally, it is estimated they generate a multiplier effect of six times as they circulate to support the local economy.
In addition to over $10 million in staffing related expenses, CFVH paid nearly $830,000 to local vendors for services and supplies during 2012.

First hand experience
As a patient who suffers from severe osteoporosis, COPD and congestive heart failure, I feel so fortunate to have found quality primary care close to home.
I haven’t been coming to Plains Family Medicine for very long, but establishing care with Dr. Jeanne Williams has made a huge impact on my life.
I lived in Plains years ago and recently returned from Colorado Springs, CO needing much more care than before as I am now 74 and have diseases in their progressed stages. Seeing healthcare providers regularly has become a regular part of my life and the hospital has grown so much since I first lived here that I can now get everything from primary to specialty care with the occasional spout of emergency and inpatient care whenever I need it.
I can’t express enough what a world of difference it makes not to endure long travel to my appointments. Making appointments is easy and my care seems so much more coordinated within the framework of a smaller healthcare facility.
Dr. Williams is among the best physicians I have seen. She really takes the time to listen to me and keeps me included in my care plan decisions. Her sincerity and compassion for her patients is evident in so many ways but I appreciate her never making me feel rushed. She expressed early on that she had time to answer my questions and wanted to ensure I fully understood my plan of care before leaving each and every appointment. This is a true luxury in the confusing world of medicine these days.

“We were welcomed with the relaxing scentof lavender, quiet music and dimmed lighting.”
Ever since we became pregnant, we imagined delivering our baby naturally in a comfortable environment with resources readily available to handle any situation. Clark Fork Valley Hospital was that perfect combination.
As soon as we arrived at our delivery suite we were wel-comed with the relaxing scent of lavender, quiet music and dimmed lighting. Our nurse quickly placed the fetal heart monitor on my abdomen so we could hear our ba-by’s heartbeat. As my labor progressed, I took advantage of our private room’s jacuzzi tub, birthing ball and birth-ing bar to relax.
Our labor and delivery experience was one of the most significant moments in our lives - it truly was a beautiful and miraculous blessing. The staff at CFVH were caring, supportive and most of all respectful of my wishes and birth plan decisions.

As a tax-exempt non-profit healthcare provider, it is an important part of our mission to maximize and measure the benefits we provide to the communities we serve. Some of the benefits we provide are more obvious in nature, such as charity assistance and sliding scale discounts to low income patients which amounted to $624,157 in 2012. Other community benefits are not as well known, but are nonetheless diverse and include:
Community Benefit Operations Community Building Activities Community Health Improvement Services Financial and In-Kind Contributions Health Professions Education
During 2012, CFVH employees tracked over 620 hours of work time dedicated to various community activities. In addition, those same individuals identified over 1,800 hours of their own personal time supporting various community endeavors like:
Boy Scouts CADAA Cancer Network of Sanders County Chicks N Chaps Civil Air Patrol EMT Training Local Chambers of Commerce School Boards Youth Sport Leagues

Students from across the county joined CFVH employees for a day on the job as part of the Montana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) REACH pro-gram in early Spring 2012. Students were given the opportunity to explore a number of fields in healthcare through a variety of hands on activities includ-ing laparoscopic surgery in the OR, intubation and IV placement of a dummy patient in the ER and performing an ultrasound on an expecting mother in labor and delivery.
CFVH hopes experiences like these will spark an interest in Sanders County youth to pursue careers in the industry and possibly return to the area to work one day.

Laura Lanfear, Home Health RNAfter 18 years of working as a home health nurse, I have made many connections with my patients that I find to be sincere and often lasting. Working in a home setting and often being the only nurse caring for my patient at a time, I regularly am made to feel like family. It isn’t uncommon that I have cared for other family members and dear friends of my patients, creating an even greater sense of comfort and trust as I assist them to regain their independence or navigate an illness or difficult time in their life. I feel fortunate because I can make an impact on many people in a single case; care for my patient, help and teach caregivers and comfort friends and family all at once. My patients benefit from a coordinated care team all in one healthcare facility. It is easy for them and me to work with their primary care and rehabilitation providers quickly to ensure they get the care they need when they need it. In addi-tion, we are well aware of what resources are available to them close to home.
Carlane Jensen, Mammography TechnologistIn the world of mammography, I oftentimes am an advocate for my patients as they navigate highly emotional real-life situations and fears. Whether the potential of can-cer is even discussed, it is why we are here and what is always at the back of my patients’ minds. Every day is different and I like having the opportunity to meet new people, hear their stories and often be their confidant when they need it most. I ap-preciate the calm and comfortable atmosphere I can offer my patients here at CFVH. Patients can get the care they need close to home with the benefit of larger facilityamenities and state-of-the-art equipment.

Jessica Steinebach, Acute Care RN2012 Employee of the YearWorking at CFVH has allowed me the opportunity to build a career for myself while raising my family in the same great community I grew up in. The hospital supported me with a flexible part-time schedule as well as invested in me as an employee with a scholarship as I worked towards my nursing degree. Now as an RN, I feel I can truly make a difference in the care of my friends and neighbors. I enjoy being a part of the healing process and am fortunate to work for an organization that works together to provide outstanding care for their patients. Sanders County residents should feel proud of the healthcare facility they have here in CFVH. It provides a premier health-care option with a comfortable environment and experienced staff.
