This accomplishment, since 2008, has been awarded, for the first time in Vietnam, with aprestigious international accreditation granted by the EFMD (European Foundation forManagement Development).During the last 20 years, the world and Vietnam have changed. The country has developedrapidly. It needs high-level managers, skillful at managing and leading companies. The CFVG,nowadays with over 2,100 graduates, has contributed to this requirement.

The last year’s launch of the doctoral program with a consortium of four prestigious institutionsgoes in the direction desired by our two countries and matches their respective priorities. The French government has continuously supported the CFVG since its creation and, while itcontinues to do so, I am happy that this center is gradually taking charge, a sign of maturity. Prof. Serge Dauchy, Director of Lille Nord de France Doctoral School and Research Director at CNRS,

arrived in Vietnam for the first time (and first time in Asia). We are interested in his impressions of his visit, his opinions of the CFVG, the PhD programme and in particular, what we could do to improve and developit in the future.

Ms. Delphine Rousselet-Vinot, Deputy Director of the CFVG Ho Chi Minh City (DRV): What do you think about your first visit to Vietnam, to Hanoi and then to Ho Chi Minh City?

Mr. Dauchy (SD): Thank you! Well, a wonderful experience, all my colleagues told me about thehospitality of the country, the warmness of the Vietnamese, their willingness to work and to go forward. The experience did not disappoint me, and it was even more enjoyable because between Hanoi and HoChi Minh City, I had a chance to make a little tour to Ha Long Bay.

A welcoming and loving country with a population very young and the young people I met were very likable

and nice. A very good experience. It is true that this was my first visit to Asia, and I need to say that if therewas a country that I wanted to see on this continent, it was really Vietnam!

DRV: You visited our two centers, in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, what are your general impressions?

SD: I only know the CFVG for a very short time. I am not a professor in finance or marketing, but a lawhistorian. I am coming here as the Director of the Lille Doctoral School. My colleagues Frédéric Lobez andMarie-Hélène Fosse-Gomez praised Vietnam and told me a lot about enthusiasm of the present teams, but I did not realized there was such a distance between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City!

Interview

.

We are happy to announce that Ms. Delphine Rousselet-Vinot ([email protected]) took up her position as Deputy Director of the CFVG Ho Chi Minh City on February the11th. Mr. André Schmitt, Co-Director of CFVG Ho Chi Minh City ended his term at theend of June, 2011 and returned to his post at the University of Strasbourg after 2 yearsand a half at the CFVG, where he was always dedicated and rigorous in his academic aswell as mana ement work.

Graduated from Reims Management School, Ms Delphine Rousselet-Vinot has diverse experiences inthe luxury industry (seven years with the grand designers of Paris haute-couture fashion), at the FrenchEmbassy in Moscow (for 5 years, economic mission), and then for 5 years creating her own enterprise inParis.

This recruitment marks a strong step in the growth of the CFVG, who now takes charge of the essentialpart of the post, while the Embassy of France adopts a complementary role. The CFVG Ho Chi Minh Cityand the CFVG have also reinforced, especially in communication, the relations with the enterprises, theadministration, as competition is getting tougher, but also as the demands for training at the high level ofeducation increase, become more diversified and need an irreproachable quality.

Since February 1st, Ms Tran Thi Nhu Nguyen has also joined CFVG Ho Chi MinhCity's staff as the Communication Manager and MMSS (Master in Marketing Sales

and Services) Programme Assistant. She succeeded Ms. Vo Thi Thao Nguyen inboth positions.

Boasting a Master degree in Management of the Cultural Sector granted byl’Université Libre de Bruxelles and with 5 years as the Manager of Communication atthe IDECAF (Insititute of Cultural Exchanges with France in Ho Chi Minh City), NhuNguyen brings to the CFVG precious qualities and contributes to the development ofthe Center.

They also told me about Vietnamese students that they met during their teaching time here. I arrived inHanoi with a warm welcome from the people in charge, Mr. Bruno Ponson and Mr Nguyen Chan.

I arrived in Hanoi at 6 am and had my first conference at 11 am. This conference on research methodsgathered much more participants in Ho Chi Minh City than in Hanoi, but in both places, the quality ofresearchers was very good.

In both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, I found very good quality people at the management level as well asthe administrative level, who were always ready to help and guide me. I also found both centers qualifiedto provide a high quality education.

DRV: The PhD programme is a very young programme for the CFVG, it has existed for only one year and a half. Our first intake will receive their Master 2 Degree tonight. What are your impressions of this PhD programme?

SD: The consortium between the CFVG and 4 French partners offers richness, also an opportunity to havea variety of partners but this is also a factor of difficulties. I met PhD candidates who are extremelymotivated to do research that will take three to four years. What makes them more deserving candidates isthat they have a family to take care of and many things that they have to deal with are not always obvious.

On the other hand, the essential is that they all have research directors who they call their supervisors. They have many occasions to meet personally their supervisors during the professors’ visits for theircourses, with whom they maintain regular contacts by email, skype, etc.

The PhD program has certain specific features, framed in France by the decree in 2006 which eachuniversity has to follow, even if different modalities can lead to different practices at different PhD schools.I found the PhD candidates, whom I called young researchers, who have good bases and who havestarted their long-term research very well, but who themselves faced certain difficulties and had certainquestions and anxieties toward the administrative structure that accompanies their research. For thethesis, each school has its own issues linked to the 2006 decree, training issues, follow-up issues, issuesof application and re-application. They also found that as PhD candidates, they were connected toresearch centers of their thesis directors and these centers also organize seminars. This is a new scenethat is opened for them, a new scene that they also must get used to.

The CFVG had the good idea to foresee in the partner contract the presence of these students in Francefor at least 4 – 5 weeks a year. They already took contacts, some of they will go very soon. However, Iwarned them that the French school calendar was not the same as the Vietnamese one and it will beuseless to plan their stay for example in August. They also must be aware that as they began their firstthesis year in September 2011 and they are in fact at the end of this first year. Therefore, I suggested forthe following years, they should organize their stay in France sooner, around February/March to be able toget things done fast and meet all the important people for their research work: the PhD school, researchlaboratory and of course their thesis director.

To help them to profit fully from this stay in France and all these exchanges, I think it is necessary toencourage them to follow a short course in the French language.

My trip to Vietnam really allowed me to understand their difficulties, their questions, and as the Director ofthe PhD School, I will do my utmost to find the modalities allowing to simplify the life of those who will beenrolled at Lille, without making the concessions on the requirements on the terms of work and the qualityof research, and in their own interest, the PhD schools are there for the students and not the other wayround.

DRV: Finally, tonight you are going to deliver the Master 2 degrees to nine students in Ho Chi Minh City, what will you tell them, what message will you give them?

SG: I will tell them that I’m not qualified to give them this degree (smiling) because I am nota professor in this program, but particularly, I will tell them that this degree is the key for thethesis step and without this degree, their application for the thesis is impossible.Especially, I will tell them that they have a very, very big opportunity to have been able tostudy at the CFVG with very high quality professors, experts, study program and courses. Ifthis degree is granted to them, it is because they deserved it, because the demands on thequality were respected, because no compromise was made in this program, in the exams orin the record. They could be proud of the work they did and they were awarded with thisdegree for this. For my part, I am proud that our school Lille could count on these high quality students whowish to follow this program. It shows the CFVG could be a symbol of the friendshipbetween France and Vietnam, between the partner institutions in France and the CFVG inboth Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

DRV: Thanks a lot, Mr Dauchy for this conversation, and especially for having supported

the CFVG and for our PhD program! We look forward to seeing you again very soon.
