Basketry Since the dawn of humanity, we have been making baskets. In this merit badge you will learn the basics of this ancient art and its applications. By the end of the class you will understand the process of basket weaving and turn that knowledge into your own handmade basket. Composite Materials Composites can be found just about everywhere in the modern world, from items in your kitchen drawer, to the bikes in the Tour d’ France. Mariner’s Program (CFI’s “Trail to 1st Class”) The Mariners Program is designed to be a “Trail to 1st Class” for Scouts who have recently joined a troop or crossed over from Webelos. This program is designed to aid new Scouts in navigating the world of Scouting. Here you will learn basic Scout skills and methods, in addition to earning your Totin’ Chip, Firem’n Chit, First Aid Merit Badge, and Swimming Merit Badge. This program is not intended to advance from Scout to First Class in a week, though it may help. Our main goal is to make sure your first summer camp experience is one of the best and that your intro to the Scouting world ignites a fire in you for years to come. Cycling is a 3-period class Since 1911, hundreds of thousands of Scouts have made the most of their two-wheel adventures by earning the Cycling merit badge. Whether you just got your first bicycle or have been cycling for years, you will learn more about your bike and what it can do by working on the requirements for this badge. The camp has a selection of nearly new road bikes for rent $25, Scouts may choose to bring their own bikes for use. Personal bikes must be appropriate for long distances and are subject to inspection by qualified staff. Maximum number of participants: 12 Prerequisites: Before coming to camp you must complete a 10, 15 and 25-mile bike ride.

2019 Aquatics Merit Badges

Board Sailing This award has been developed to introduce Scouts to basic boardsailing skills, equipment, and safety precautions; to encourage the development of skills that promote fitness and safe aquatic recreation; and to lay a skill and knowledge foundation for those who will later participate in more advanced and demanding activities on the water. Boardsailing is not a merit badge. Maximum number of participants: 6

Canoeing The canoe was a primary method of travel for explorers and settlers. Today, it remains an important part of the wilderness experience and an enjoyable leisure activity that teaches communication, teamwork, and physical fitness. Maximum number of participants: 16

Celestial Navigation (CFI’s New Aquatic Program) To be a true pirate, one must be able to orient themselves using the oldest method available-the stars. In this 5-period course, scouts will expand on their sailing skills by serving as the crew of our hallmark 23-foot sailboat, Kryptonite. They will earn the orienteering and astronomy, merit badges and finish the week with an overnight sail where they will be given coordinates to their location and using the stars and basic orienteering skills, they will safely arrive at a shipwrecked shore. Scouts participating in Celestial Navigation will be unable to participate in regular merit badge sessions. Celestial Navigation is a 5-period class. Recommended age: 16 and up Maximum number of participants: 4 Prerequisites: Completed the Small-Boat Sailing Merit Badge Anticipated costs: $20 Fee

A103 Flying Hull (CFI’s New Aquatic Program) Camp Fiesta Island’s Catamaran Sailing Program is an intensive week-long course for Scouts with sailing experience. These scouts will learn catamaran sailing from start to finish from rigging and rules of the road to racing techniques, hiking out, and “flying a hull”. Wind permitting, the week will finish off with a Thursday sail trip through the ocean to San Diego Bay for an overnight camping trip with a BBQ dinner, and a return trip on Friday. Scouts participating in the Flying Hull program will be unable to participate in regular merit badge sessions. Adults are welcome to participate so long as there is space remaining when you arrive at camp. Flying Hull is a 5-period class. Recommended age: 14 and up Maximum number of participants: 6 Prerequisites: Completed the Small-Boat Sailing Merit Badge Anticipated costs: $50 Fee

Kayaking Kayaking was once the preferred water transportation of the Inuit people, and has now become an incredibly popular source of exercise and competitive sport. In the kayaking merit badge scouts will learn the basics of kayaking in a flat water and calm environment. Maximum number of participants: 20

Lifesaving No Boy Scout will ignore a plea for help. However, the desire to help is of little use unless one knows how to give the proper aid. The main purpose of the Lifesaving merit badge is to prepare Scouts to assist those involved in water accidents, teaching them the basic knowledge of rescue techniques, the skills to perform them, and the judgment to know when and how to act so that they can be prepared for emergencies. A108 Paddle Boarding

Stand up paddle boarding, also known as “SUP” is a fun, relaxing activity that anyone can enjoy. Scouts will learn proper paddle technique and balance on the calm waters of the bay. Maximum number of participants: 16

Personal Water Craft In Personal watercraft (PWC), participants will enjoy a week of instruction and ride time on our jet skis. Participants will be exposed to a variety of locations around Mission Bay as they navigate choppy waters. The Scouts and adults that sign up for this class will learn safety and how to properly ride and control the personal watercraft. Maximum number of participants: 4 Recommended age: 16 and up. If the Scout is under the age of 16, an adult must sign up with the Scout. Anticipated costs: $150per person/ $225.00 if you ride double

A110 Rowing Rowing is the use of oars as a means of propelling boats, and it has grown from a basic method of transportation to a competitive sport and an enjoyable method of exercising. In this merit badge, you will learn proper rowing techniques and skills. Maximum number of participants: 12

A111 Scuba Diving (Full day program & free time) Start with a dash of swimming skills add equal measures of aquatics first aid, safety, and conservation. Do use liberally with ADVENTURE! Through this program you will earn your scuba diving merit badge, along with your PADI Open Water Diving Certification. Participants will explore the beautiful waters off the San Diego Coast. Scuba Diving is an all-day class M/T/W/Th/F and during free time. Participants will be expected to transport themselves to and from the Scuba facility. Recommended age: 13 and up Maximum number of participants: 10 Anticipated costs: $550 (includes flippers, goggles, snorkel and booties) Prerequisites: Completed the Swimming Merit Badge

Indian Lore Merit Badge Far different from the stereotypes or common images that are portrayed on film, on television, and in many books and stories, American Indians have many different cultures, languages, religions, styles of dress, and ways of life. To learn about these different groups is to take an exciting journey of discovery in which you will meet some of America's most fascinating peoples. IA102 Open Crafts In a Craft merit badge and want to spend some more time on your project? Just want to put some of your crafty skills to use? Then come on by the crafts area put your skills to use!

Open Waterfront Wednesday Morning and afternoon the waterfront will open up for scouts and adults. Use your aquatics skills on any of our paddle craft (paddle boards, canoes, kayaks, and rowboats), on our small sailing boats, or cool off with a nice dip in the swim area.

Relax & Chill If you don’t want to do anything, kick back and relax in your campsite. Play games, read, work on your nap safely certification, or work on figuring out the treasure of Fiesta Island.

Tie-dye Wednesday in the Craft Area Come by the Crafts area at 10 am and 2 pm, to create your own piece of tie-dyed clothing. All materials are provided, and a staff member will be there to guide you through the process. Please bring an article to dye or buy one of the CFI patterned shirts especially designed for tie-dyeing from the trading post. Wade into the surf, walk along the boardwalk, or simply soak up the sun on this beautiful part of the Southern Californian Coast. Aviation Merit Badge taught on the U.S.S. Midway Since the dawn of time, humanity has dreamed of the possibility of flight. Now, that dream is a reality, as we have been able to fly faster, higher, and farther than any other creature. In this merit badge class, you will learn about the fundamentals of flight, the ways flight is important to us today, and get to test your skill on flight training simulators. And what better place to earn the Aviation Merit Badge than onboard the historic aircraft carrier U.S.S. Midway? Transportation to and from, as well as excursion supervision is provided. WA103 Belmont Park Opened in 1925; this historic amusement park is a local icon, still housing the Big Dipper roller coaster, one of the last wooden rollercoaster on the West Coast.
