The 12th International Conference & Expo on Emerging Technologies for a Smarter World

This is the 12th International Conference and Expo on Emerging Technologies organized by the Center of Excellence inWireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) at Stony Brook University. Our major sponsors of this year‘s conferenceinclude CA Technologies, Softheon, Zebra Technologies, Henry Schein, Inc., Hoffmann & Baron, LLP, Northrop GrummanCorporation, SVAM International Inc., and MATIMOP – The Israel Industry Center for R&D. The Conference is co-hosted byStony Brook University, SUNY Korea, and CEWIT Korea.

The Conference has gained international recognition as one of the premier conferences on the development and application of emerging technologies and for bringing together academic research and industry innovation at a singleforum. This year’s conference features ten sessions including: Big Data Architecture and Analytics; Health Technologiesand Medical Devices; Information Technology and Society; Smart Energy and Urban Systems; Cybersecurity; and theInternet of Things; as well as three special panels on the Entrepreneur’s Toolkit and Funding, Trends in Venture Capital,and New York State Funded Resources for Entrepreneurs. We have also organized Big Data and Data Science TutorialWorkshops on Python Data Analytics and R Machine Learning as well as International Business to Business networkingfeaturing delegations from Israel and Korea. Through this conference, we aim to disseminate research findings and innovative solutions to major technical challenges in developing a smarter global environment.

CEWIT is a next generation research and educational facility, whose mission is three-fold: become recognized as a worldleader in interdisciplinary research in emerging, critical technologies of the information age; address the skilled technology worker shortage; and foster new enterprise development. It is critical for those who are engaged in IT researchto build strategic alliances and business partnerships among the academic, scientific, and business communities.Working with other organizations, technology commercialization activities can be formulated to help drive economicgrowth worldwide by quickly moving technologies from research labs to the marketplace.

IT is still not a mature technology and we expect the rapid advances of the last several decades to continue and increasethousand folds in many fields. Thus, IT will continue to create new and highly profitable businesses that we have not evenimagined. Computational chemistry and biology, grid computing, tying far flung supply chains, and even e-commerce,etc. are at the beginning of their creation. Within the so-called “Internet of Things,” sensors are being embedded indevices ranging from smartphones, automobiles, and utility meters to assembly lines, warehouses, and hospitals to capture data in real time. Hundreds of millions of users around the globe now contribute new data, generating newknowledge and collaboration on new innovations using the Internet.

The conference this year hosts a wide range of high-caliber speakers, including leading researchers, technologists, executives and policy makers, and a broad international audience. This conference has attracted authors and participants from all over the world, from academic institutions, industry, and government institutions. The conferenceprogram features more than 130 oral and poster presentations, including many leading research and industry experts. It also provides networking opportunities for individuals engaged in research, development, and commercialization of technologies.

Russell M. Artzt Chairman, Industrial Advisory Board, CEWIT, Co-Founder, CA Technologies, and Chief Executive Officer, With more than 30 years of ITindustry experience as a technology leader, consultant and executive, RussellArtzt provides counsel in the areas of strategic partnerships, product development leadership, community and public affairs, and corporate strategy.Artzt co-founded CA Technologies (formerly CA) in 1976 and wrote the code forsome of the company's first products. Throughout much of his career at CATechnologies, Artzt served as executive vice president of research and development where he was instrumental in building the R&D, and field services organizations. Prior to his position as vice chairman, Artzt served asexecutive vice president of products, managing all product business units at CATechnologies, with particular focus on the integration of the company’s indus-try-leading management software portfolio. Earlier, he led CA Technologiessecurity brand, overseeing all aspects of the company’s award-winning securityproduct line. Artzt also ran the storage product line, successfully spearheadingan organizational model that unified development, support and marketing with-in a brand unit. Artzt is a recognized expert in software development and proj-ect management. He serves as the Chairperson of the Industrial Advisory Boardof Stony Brook University's Center of Excellence for Wireless and InformationTechnology (CEWIT) and is also a member of the Board of Directors for theAdvanced Energy Research Group. In March 2008, Artzt was inducted into theLong Island Technology Hall of Fame. He is also active with many charitableorganizations. He is a major supporter of North Shore University Hospital. Inaddition, he is a member of the Queens College Foundation Board of Trustees.Artzt received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Queens College and amaster's degree in computer science from New York University.

Harry L. LeiderChief Medical Officer and Group VicePresident, Walgreen Company

Harry Leider, MD, MBA has over 25 years experience as a physician executive in a variety of innovative healthcare organizations. As Chief Medical Officer anda Group Vice President of Walgreens, he is responsible for developing enterprise-wide health and wellness services that provide customer value and improvepatients’ lives. Prior to joining Walgreens, Dr. Leider was Chief Medical Officerand Senior Vice President of Ameritox, a national laboratory that provides med-ication monitoring services to physicians that treat chronic pain and seriousmental illness.

In addition to his extensive background in population health, Dr Leider hasbroad experience in managed care. He served as Chief Medical Officer atXLHealth, a Population Health company and Medicare health plan that served

seniors with chronic illnesses. Previously he was Chief Medical Officer forHealthNet, a hospital-owned managed care organization, and a physician exec-utive at Harvard Pilgrim Health Plan.

Dr. Leider speaks frequently to national audiences and is a core faculty member for the American College of Physician Executives, where he was a recentpast-President and Board Chairman. His publications appear in journals andbooks including: the Essentials of Medical Management and PracticingMedicine in the 21st Century. He serves on the editorial boards of: PhysicianExecutive, and the Journal of Population Health Management. Dr. Leider is afounding board member of the Disease Management Association of America andserved on the Board of the Institute of Aging at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Leider obtained a BA from Pennsylvania State University, an MD from the University of Pennsylvania, and his MBA from the University of Washington Foster School Of Business. For six years he was an attending physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and faculty member at HarvardMedical School.

Girish RishiExecutive Vice PresidentNorth America Installation and Services and Tyco Retail Solutions,Tyco International

Girish Rishi joined Tyco as Executive Vice President, North America Installation& Services and Tyco Retail Solutions, in May 2015. In this role, Mr. Rishi hasresponsibility for Tyco’s commercial fire and security businesses in the U.S. andCanada, a segment with nearly $3.9 billion in revenue in fiscal year 2014, aswell as the global Tyco Retail Solutions vertical market business. Before joiningTyco, he served as Senior Vice President, Enterprise Visibility and Mobility, withZebra Technologies. Previously, Mr. Rishi oversaw product development, productmanagement and engineering for the Enterprise division of Motorola Solutionsand held positions of increasing responsibility with Symbol Technologies, rang-ing from sales and marketing roles to general management responsibility forseveral global regions. Mr. Rishi holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce fromthe University of Mumbai, India, a master’s degree in business administrationfrom the University of Hartford, where he serves on the Board of Regents, and amaster’s degree in international public policy from Johns Hopkins University.

Yacov ShamashVice President for Economic Development,Stony Brook University

Dr. Shamash is the Vice President for Economic Development at Stony BrookUniversity. As Vice President, Dr. Shamash supervises the University’s four incu-bators, three New York State Centers for Advanced Technology, the Center ofExcellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), the Advanced EnergyResearch and Technology Center, the Small Business Development Center, andthe workforce development programs of the Center for Emerging Technologies. In1995, Dr. Shamash led SUNY’s colleges of engineering to create the statewideStrategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) program. Stony Brook’scumulative results include more than 2,985 projects completed with more than480 companies, helping company partners win more than $95 million in com-petitive federal awards. During the period from 1992 to 2015 Dr. Shamashserved as Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at StonyBrook University. Under his leadership, the College has grown from 1500 to over5000 students with average SAT scores of entering UG students increasing from1150 to 1343, and external research expenditures increased six fold to $30 mil-lion. Prior to joining Stony Brook in 1992, Dr. Shamash served as the Director ofthe School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington StateUniversity and was responsible for the establishment of a National ScienceFoundation Industry/ University Center for the Design of Analog/DigitalIntegrated Circuits. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Keytronic,American Medical Alert and Applied DNA. He is also a member of the Board ofDirectors for the Long Island Software & Technology Network (LISTnet) and theLong Island Angel Network. Dr. Shamash has held faculty positions at FloridaAtlantic University, the University of Pennsylvania and Tel Aviv University. Hereceived his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Imperial College ofScience and Technology in London, England. He has authored more than 130publications and is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Dr. Satya Sharma came to Stony Brook University as the Executive Director ofCEWIT and a faculty member of Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2003.Before joining Stony Brook, Dr. Sharma was Senior Vice President at SymbolTechnologies from 1995 to 2003, overseeing various divisions of the companyincluding World-Wide Operations, Mobile Computing & Wireless Engineering,and Quality & Process Improvements. Prior to his tenure at Symbol, he wasDirector of AT&T Power Systems and an adjunct professor at Southern MethodistUniversity. Dr. Sharma has managed technology, led product development, man-aged marketing and financial functions, led operations and taken a leadershiprole in organizational transformation. He led Lucent Technologies to win theDeming Prize in 1994, making it the first and still the only American

manufacturing company to have this honor. While leading Symbol’s MobileComputing & Wireless Engineering, the company won the National Medal ofTechnology in 2000. Dr. Sharma also led Lucent and Symbol to win the ShingoPrize in 1992 and 2003 respectively. Dr. Sharma has more than 70 technicalpublications and conducts research in a wide variety of disciplines. He holds aPh.D. degree in mechanical engineering from University of Pennsylvania and anMBA degree from Ohio State University.

In 2009 Nancy L. Zimpher became the 12th Chancellor of The State University ofNew York.

Chancellor Zimpher leads a diverse set of initiatives at SUNY in several areas,including research and innovation, energy, health care, global affairs, and theeducation pipeline. She has been a vocal advocate for groundbreaking legislative reforms that ensure SUNY can provide broad access to higher educa-tion while maximizing its impact as an engine of economic revitalization acrossthe state.

Dr. Zimpher is active in numerous state and national education organizations,and is a leader in the areas of teacher preparation, urban education, and uni-versity-community engagement. She is chair of the Board of Governors of theNew York Academy of Sciences and the National Association of System Heads.From 2005–2011 she led the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities, and from2012–2013 she was chair of CEOs for Cities. As co-founder of StriveTogether,Zimpher has been instrumental in creating a national network of innovative sys-temic partnerships that address challenges across the education pipeline.

Prior to coming to SUNY, Dr. Zimpher served as president of the University ofCincinnati, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and executivedean of the Professional Colleges and dean of the College of Education at TheOhio State University.
