At CES students are expected to be SAFE, be RESPECTFUL and be RESPONSIBLE STAAR started in 2011. STAAR costs $90 million annually to administer. $3 to $7 is given per test. Tests are timed with a 4-hour maximum time limit per test. STAAR will have more questions per test, measure a higher level of thinking, and have more questions that require a student’s written response (vs. multiple choice questions). Ms. Kreps thinks that the STAAR tests costs about $9 million. Can you imagine that is 10 times that! Fifth grader Jordan Carter, studies and gets a good night sleep to take the STAAR test the next day. The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness is graded in Austin, that’s why it takes time to get your grades. Some scores have gone up here at Canutillo El- ementary. We had 3 stars last year and the year before we had 1 star and now this year we have 4 stars! Grace, a 5th grade student, feels very anxious and pretty nervous about her scores but also feels confident. At CES students are expected to be SAFE,

be RESPECTFUL and be RESPONSIBLE

STAAR started in 2011. STAAR costs $90 million annually to administer. $3

Ms. Kreps thinks that the STAAR tests costs about $9

million. Can you imagine that is 10 times that! Fifth grader Jordan Carter, studies and gets a good night sleep to take the

STAAR test the next day. The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness is graded in Austin, that’s why it takes time to get your

grades. Some scores have gone up here at Canutillo El-ementary. We had 3 stars last year and the year before

we had 1 star and now this

year we have 4 stars! Grace, a 5th grade student, feels very anxious and pretty nervous about her scores but

P.E es importante porque ayu-

da al cuerpo y a la salud.

También te puede ayudar a

fortalecer tu cuerpo haciendo

ejercicios. Otra cosa que te

ayuda es aliviar el estrés. En

las escuelas elementales

aprendes hacer ejercicio por-

que te dan el mensaje tem-

prano de la importancia de la

educación física. En P.E te en-

senan también sobre partes del

cuerpo humano.

Students favorite PE classes

are tennis, pad day, Monday

mile, obstacle course, and

exercises . The coaches

need to do P.E because

the state of Texas requires

that students are physi-

cally active at least 135

minutes a week and it’s

important to learn healthy

lifestyle. The most impor-

tant P. E. activities are

cardio activities because

if students are healthy

then they can enjoy all other

activities. Coaches use the mo-

ney from Fundraisers to repla-

ce missing or broken equip-

ment and to buy also new one.

The coaches teach Health be-

cause it is important for the

students to learn the impor-

tance of healthy habits to live

a healthy life.

Chess is a two player board

game that involves thinking about

strategies to win. Each player has

sixteen pieces which are moved on

a checkered board. The way to win

chess is to capture all the other pla-

yers’ pieces.

Mr. Gonzalez said “ I wanted to

start chess because learning chess

is a good opportunity for kids to

play a challenging game.”

first book about chess was

in 1749. The first world

chess champion was

Wilhelm Steinitz in, 1886,

from Australia. The cham-

pion for 2018 is Magnus

Carlson, from Norway.

Some of the activities at the li-brary are the book fair, comput-

er based programs, robotics, les-sons, and a lot more. Mrs. Ro-driguez said that she would use the book fair money to buy tech-nology for students and teach-

ers. She will also buy new books to replace old and damaged

books. Mrs. Rodriguez said that the estimated number of books that students check out every

year is around 25,000 books!

She said that she buys around 400 books every

school year. Mrs. Rodriguez said that the average num-ber of students that reach the 100 point club each year

is about 200 students.

active. Isaiah’s likes Do You Believe in Magic dance because he likes the movements and having a goal to complete.

Quira says that Kids Excel helps her by staying fit. Ricky says it helps him get better control of his body. Kid Excel is important because it teaches

excellence and self-confidence. Betsy, Kid’s Excel instructor said it’s kind of hard to teach Kids Excel because its different

teaching and you need to have special training at New York. She said that in Kids Excel the kids learn how to work as a

team and get self-confidence. In this class, instructors teach music, dances, how to be in a show, how to be respectful and

a leader.

Kids Excel is located in 2235 Wyoming Ave in El Paso, TX. Kids Excel teaches activities that makes a kids/adults more

active. It helps you with your health. This program goes to schools to teach the students about health and they teach the kids some dances. This program

selects some students from ele-mentary schools. This show is in sometimes at The Plaza Thea-

ter.

At Kids Excel Gavin’s favorite dance is the Alphabet Soup dance because he likes the pro-

cess of training. Angel’s favorite dance is the Treasure Dance

because he has fun and gets

Student council engages stu-dents in learning about de-mocracy and to make them a leader not a follower. Also stu-dent council does many fund-

raisers such as bake sales and school carnivals. In elemen-tary, student council will have a president, secretary, treas-urer, and fundraising officer.

Secondary school governments often have more independence

than younger grade levels. Our student council has

our back and listens to our complaints

and tries to help and fix

our problems to make our

school better.

Fifth grade Student

council members expressed their opinions about being members of this exclusive club. Jorden said that she has done activities like the Home Com-

ing Parade, organized the Lost and Found, and fixing the food schedule. Je-sus said he is trying to impact our school by

improving the play-

ground for all students. Aziel said that we need student council because the student’s voice needs to be heard, so

that kids also get to make deci-sions to help with problems and to plan changes to make

our school better. Mia said that we need to improve our

school; our teachers listen to our opinions and listen to what we want to learn. Katelin said that they have gone to very im-portant field trips like EPCC.

providing hope and opportuni-ty to young people across the

country.

Ariadna from 5th grade said

that she likes the Boys and Girls Club because they go outside to play soccer and likes to uses her phone to listen to

music. Gael from 5th goes to Boys & Girls Clubs because he does his homework

and plays dodgeball.

Saul a 5th grader said that during this time he learns Science and Reading at the Club.

Isaac, the Boys & Girls Club tutor, said he is proud of the or-ganization of Boys & Girls Club because

they get to make posi-tive impact in the lives of many stu-dents. Jonathan, an-other tutor of Boys &

Girls Club, likes to help students; it gives them the opportunity to impact knowledge and help them in their

of America in 1990. 2006 marked the Centennial year of Boys & Girls Clubs of America,

Fourth grader Shyday said “ I like chess and want to try something new.” Fifth

grader Gabriel said “ Chess helps me figure out ways around problems.” Fifth grader Jordan said “ I think it really helps my mind figure out strategies and some how

involves a friendly competition. “

WHAT IS AUTISM?

Autism is a range of conditions fea-

turing challenges with speech, repeti-tive behavior, and problems com-municating. There

are many types of autism, caused by differ-ent combinations of inheritance from family and place where they spend their time. Autism’s most obvious signs tend at 2 and 3 years old. Centers for Disease control esti-

mates 1 in 68 have this disorder. This is 1

in 42 boys and 1 in 182 girls.
