The CEW

The Centre for Education and Work, is a project-funded not-for-profit educational organization located at the University of Winnipeg

The CEW is recognized for our innovative, multi-media learning materials that promote deeper and more lasting learning

CertWork Project• CertWork Project (3 year project funded by the Government

of Canada – Foreign Credentials Recognition Branch)

• Partnership between the Centre for Education and Work and the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (Manitoba)

• Work- Based Managerial Certificate verifying managerial skills and experience

The Work-Based Certification Project Responds to Labour Market Needs

• Canadian companies need skilled managers

• Immigrants are a rich source of potential managers

• Canadian companies often are not able to assess offshore credentials and experience in relation to local and regional needs, especially in non-regulated professions

Immigrant Candidates• Highly skilled immigrants may already have

post - secondary credentials and managerial experience in their country of origin

• Many would benefit from a Canadian credential but would not want to re-do university or college

CertWork Project Scope

• A certificate based on industry-determined standards for the position of Manager (manufacturing)

• A training program for company-based assessors and mentors

• A mentorship and assessment system for immigrants with managerial experience to demonstrate their skills and experience

Goals

• Invite participation in this project to train 10 assessors, 10 mentors and to assess 10 candidates

• Candidates are selected from immigrants with off-shore credentials and previous managerial experience

• 1 Assessor, 1 Mentor and 1 Candidate from the same company

• 30 People in total

• Assessors and mentors chosen based on experience, willingness to participate in training, and personal qualities

• Candidates chosen based on potential for a future management position and willingness to prepare for assessment

• Assessors and Mentors– ½ day of in-class training– Supplementary on-line training– No charge for training– CEW will pay an honorarium to assessors and mentors

for their time outside of work

• Candidates– On-line training– Time with Mentors to prepare for assessment– No charge for training

Who Should Be an Assessor/Mentor?

Assessor

• Extensive Experience in the profession

• Subject Matter Expert

• Selected by the company as someone whose expertise and judgement is relied upon

Mentor

• Interested in helping less experienced individuals succeed in the profession

• Willing to share their expertise• Able to commit time to the

mentoring process• Good communicator• Subject matter expert

RolesAssessor

• Determine whether the candidates have sufficient knowledge, skills and experience as managers to be awarded the certificate

• Identify gaps that require additional training

• Recommend appropriate follow-up for candidates who do not meet all the criteria for assessment

Mentor• Prepare candidates for

assessment

• Help interpret standards and gather documentation

• Help the candidate understand the culture of the workplace
