CAN BE A FASTER PATHWAY TO BOARD CERTIFICATION
Graduates from an approved three-year residency sequence typically attempt board qualification at the conclusion of their residency training. ONCE BOARD QUALIFIED:
• Certification with the ABPM is accessible within the year of residency completion.

PATHWAY TO ABPM CERTIFICATION IS IN
LINE WITH YOUR NEEDS
Requirements now allow access to certification within
one year of residency completion:
Completion
of a CPME-approved, three-year residency sequence
Passing the ABPM Board Qualification
exam
Passing the ABPM Board Certification
exam
CANDIDATES WITH 36 MONTHS OF CPME APPROVED
RESIDENCY TRAINING
Must pass both board qualification
(part 1) and board certification
(part 2) to become board certified
May sit for and pass part 1 only
and hold board qualified status
up to 5 years before expiring
MUST attempt board qualification (part 1) within 5 years
of completion of residency training
May take examinations in the year training is completed
Are NOT REQUIRED to pass a separate case review
process to attempt certification (part 2)
IMPORTANT – CANDIDATES WITH 36 MONTHS OF CPME
APPROVED RESIDENCY TRAINING
If board certification is not achieved within the first 5 years,
candidates may continue to apply for an additional 5 years
BUT:
in the second 5 year period, candidates must pass
both part 1 and part 2 within the same examination year
Board qualified classification will not be conferred
Candidates must achieve certification with the ABPM within
10 years from the time of completion of residency training
For candidates who completed residency training prior to
2015:
Applicants who have not attempted the qualification
examination by 2014 will be given until the 2018
examination year to do so
Failure to attempt the qualification examination by 2018
will render the individual INELIGIBLE to participate in the
examination process thereafter
BASIS FOR WAIVER OF CASE SUBMISSION REQUIREMENT
FOR GRADUATES OF 36-MONTH RESIDENCY PROGRAM
A 7-year retrospective analysis of case review results comparing 36-month vs. 24-month trained applicants (first-time takers) revealed:
36-month trained applicants
• 94.7% pass rate on cases
• 92.9% pass rate on certification examination
24-month trained applicants
• 83.8% pass rate on cases
• 82.9% pass rate on certification examination

All Board Certified members must enroll in the
MOC program the year after having achieved
board certification to maintain their certification
through the 10-year cycle

IN
WOUND CARE/AMPUTATION PREVENTION
Requirements:
• examination available to ABPM diplomates only • minimum of 1000 hours of documented experience in
a wound care center or hospital service, or • completion of a CPME-approved fellowship in wound
care/amputation prevention, or similar designation AND • passing the ABPM examination in wound
care/amputation prevention
