Along with a minimum of 19 hours in child development/early childhood courses, an additional six hours may come from either liberal arts or science or child development courses. Students completing the Associate in Arts Degree may transfer to any senior-level state institution and expect to find their lower division general education requirements satisfied. Students should consult the four-year institution to which they are planning to transfer and carefully select courses that meet the requirements for that school. This can be done while working with their advisor at Western. The Certificate of Mastery is recognized by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, Child Care Licensing Division, as one step above the National Child Development Associate Credential (CDA). After successful completion of the required curriculum, the student will be eligible to complete a resource file and have it evaluated by the Council for Professional Recognition through the CDA National Credentialing Program. Students completing the Certificate of Mastery in Child Development are prepared for employment opportunities in child care centers, family child care homes, church-related and other similar child care programs.
