Ceramic manufacturers have mastered the art of imitating almost any material and the products newly-released this season, as ex-pected, are stunning in their range and vari-

ety. Whether inspired by stone or wood, the veins of marble or the splendour of mother-of-pearl, a shim-mering surface of water or the roughness of tree bark, thisyear’ssenseofluxuryisfirmlyrootedinnature.

Ceramic tile designers have abandoned all decorative excesses and are now focusing on a product's quality and practicality. The classics are being revisited, this time with a new meaning. Floral relief motifs in simple and elegant linesarecurrentlypopular.Thepopular'wood-effect'cov-erings have returned in newly-available dimensions and a modern design. 'Retro' is again in demand, with its warm shades and black and white geometric patterns, with their rich history and traditions as are fashionable ethnic motifsbasedontheskilfuljuxtapositionofdifferenttypesof wood and natural stone, with ancient shapes and pat-terns embedded in the surface. Full-body'stone-effect'porcelaintilesforexterior

huesand'stone'effecttiling, withitsnaturalmarbleveins, brings a natural vibe to any interior. The Medi-terranean colour palette is ever present, imbibing the many varied shades of the earth and sea. Soft colour tones and a natural texture acquire

a special charm when reproduced on the product as the'markoftime':chafingandabrasion, chippingandsurface deformation. These shape imperfections are typical of the particular vintage style – a model of warmth and comfort, perfect for living space.

Ceramic mosaic never loses its appeal thanks to the use of new production methods, such as the unique 'monopressocottura', which translates from the Italian as 'single pressing and firing'. The tech-nique is based on the use of dry clay and various glaz-es, which are pressed and bonded together at high pressure.Atemperatureof1200°Candan18hourfir-ing cycle guarantee the product's exceptional durabil-ity and hardwaring strength.

The extensive colour range available allows man-ufacturers to produce items and products that cater for any taste. Contemporary design, however, is dom-inated by a trend towards nature; with this comes the use of natural colour tones, namely beige, light grey, sand, taupe and anthracite.

HOME

Creating your own spa at home is a dream which can now become reality based on a well-conceived and planned architectural and design project. Home spa complexes are similar to spa resorts, created on the shores of the Atlantic (Capetown, South Africa), and the Pacific Ocean (the Baja Peninsula, Mexico).

Page 42: Cersanex 4 eng

The designers from the architects Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects rationally used the mountainous coast. The building

'grows' with the coast's elevation, so each upper floor of the structureexpands as a small mountain would narrow. This design solution has maintained the ocean view from as many of the rooms as possible and the widest upper area is completely given over to the spa complex. This area features several relaxation zones, surrounded by an elongated pool.

The open veranda, designed for sunbathing is lined with natural stone paving and the narrow grooves in betweenthestoneslabsarefilledwithshingle. The transparent parapet gives an unrestricted view of the ocean.

The spa theme is continued in the interior. The ceiling around the central hall features exclusive LED lighted panels, imitating the water's surface. It dominates the walnut minimalisitic interior. Leading up to this however, is a black-marbled corridor that is anything but modest.

The bathroom is spacious, and like any other room in the spa building, affordsanextensiveandbeautifulview through a panoramic window that spans the wall. The glass, wood and stone finish creates awarm and comfortable interior and the snow-white bathroom units on black marble emphasises the design's gentility.

The word SPA is an abbreviation and originates from the Latin 'sanitas per (pro) aquam' – 'health through water'.

A n ethnic home spa design solution has been suggested by the designers from Olson

Kundig Architects, creating a villas project on the beach of Mexico's Baja Peninsula. The creator of the idea, Jim Olson has made nature part of the structure, using only natural locally-sourced building materials.

The infinity pool, 'hidden' behindthe building is the cental part of the home spa. The pool's impercepible edge combined with traditional design features such as the double-edge, makes the water's surface 'merge' with the sourroundings.

The free passage of the external and internal spaces provides plenty of space to relax by the water. Parts of the house can be divided by impercetible sliding doors and joined by long cantilvered overhang sections. The villa's energy sustainability is affordedbythesolarpanellingandthe building's design provides for natural ventilation.

The designer shower room continues the home spa, recreating a junglewaterfall. The stone flooris interspersed with pebbles from the ocean and the ceiling made out of natural plants and vegetation emphazises the design's natural sources.

Interior designer Terry Hunziker completed the internal area in natural sand, beige and brown colour tones and selected natural wood, stone and fabric as materials. The minimalist decor of the spa's interior was inspired by the Baja Peninsula's ancient cultural motifs.

Whatever the layout of the house may be, an infinity pool will bringtrue harmony to the design. Architectural design solutions that use the space to create a home spa will form the basis of a better interior design.

l STONE

Once the design world recognised the importance of the bathroom and started to focus on the design of bathroom interiors, the actual technical completion of the designs, which are often sophisticated and luxurious, became something to consider.

A new generation material – cast marble – became the basis for producing these designer products. The Swedish company Marmite uses cast marble to create unique collections of sink units and baths.

Cast marble is an environmentally friendly material composed of an homogenous compound mix of marble chips (up to75%),polyester resinandnaturaldyes. Its main advantage is that the substance can assume any shape, transforming the most daring designs into tangible products. The marble makes it possible to produce designs up to two metres in length with a minimum thickness of 15 mm.

The high-tech manufacturing company Marmite provides high-precision sink units, that can be perfectly adapted for bathroom furniture.

The elegant glossy shine, the varied texture, the touch of natural stone and the extensive colour range is the reason why today ceramics and bathroom hardware and furniture look 21st century.

A landmark design in the cooperation between Nevio Tellatin and Antonio Lupi was the design of the slimmest bath in the world – the Medea – whose wallsarejust12mmthick.Thedesignismadeoutofartificialacrylicstone–Corian – which is a favourite material of the designer. Continuing his bathroom range, Nevio Tellatin designed the Cerchio sink unit, the simplicity and perfect roundness of which echoes the traditional barrel shape. Cerchio's slender form and shape was made possible by the designer's use of corian. The sink unit's design evolved into the Extro Piega collection. Nevio Tellatin moved away from the classic bowl shape design, replacing it instead with a sloping unit shape, with a hidden slot for drainage. The collection makes it possible to combine sink units, countertops, shapes and the locations of the tap mixer units. This season, the experimental designer Tellatin is presenting his range of shower enclosures on the exclusive 0XCOMBI shower tray base. 8mm thicktemperedglasspanelsaresetinagroove.Thecorian-flooredshowertray consists of both regularly-and-irregularly shaped removable slats. Page 60: Cersanex 4 eng

2014 has been labelled as the year of

smart technology and eco-changes in interior design. First and foremost, the changes are occurring in the con-ciousness of the 'smart clients', who are increasingly heeding professional advice, rather than taking on repairs and construction work themselves.

If interior trends are to be dis-cussed, bright colours and eclectic prints are in currently in fashion, as is maximisingtheeffectiveuseofinteri-or space and 'smart' solutions; this is then combined with a eco-approach in the use of materials. The bathroom is no exception.

With regard to the environment, considerable attention is being giv-en to the use of wood in a bathroom

design. Don't be afraid to use wood in the bathroom, however, as the latest paints and varnishes mean that contemporary wooden bath-room furniture is now moisture-re-sistant. Wood's warm texture is perfectly suited to almost any bath-room design solution. Wood can be combined with the cold textures of natural stone, for those lovers of minimalist-style interiors.

A bathroom today is not simply a bathroom – it is a complete room, in its own style, with carefully se-lected furniture and accessories, textiles and lighting. Designers of-ten concentrate more on the design of the bathroom than on the design of the other rooms in the house. Open-plan flats make it possibleto extend the bathroom, combining

and merging it into other rooms, like the bedroom, for example, is yet another of this year's trends.

The explanation for this is sim-ple – the bathroom has stopped be-ing just a place for getting washed; it has morphed into a full relax-and-un-wind-space. It is now seen as the right decision to locate the bathroom in a room with plenty of natural light (on anatticfloorinacountryhouseorda-cha). A stand-alone bath has a special chic in creating a relaxed atmosphere.

Moving to consider the technical side of the issue, it should be noted that in 2014, designers will mostly fo-cus on studying and introducing new bathroom technology and devices in-to bathroom interior design. If a TV and a hi-fi systemhave already be-come commonplace gadgets in the

bathroom, it is now worth getting to gripswithsuchelementsasthefinerpoints in the selection of digital and electronic mixer taps, the particulars of anti-scald devices and options now available in shower systems and the wi-firangeofmixertaps.The efficient use of water,maxi-

mum durability, lack of noise, safety and the possibility of using wireless technology and devices when inte-grated into the 'smart home' sys-tem, now form the main criteria when choosing modern bathroom hardware and appliances.

Creating a stylish and ergonomic

design is worth doing properly. First, draw up a plan of the bathroom based on the technology and devices to be used in the bathroom. Then, depend-ing on budget, select the decorating andfinishingmaterialsandthentakeyour time in giving the room a stylish finish and decorative style. Today'swidechoiceoffinishingmaterials,ac-cessories and bathroom hardware and appliances will make creating a stylish, safe and comfortable space possible, for a design with any budg-et. Good luck in designing and creat-ing your bathroom!

It should be comfortable and convenient, but it should also make a good impression on others. Therefore, when in the process of designing a house, I try to understand the client as much as possible: their habits, preferences and desires. Everyone has different habitsand there aren't really any universal recipes for comfort - I would name the correct use of lighting and the proportional use of space'. Within any style you can create convenience, good lighting and an accurate design composition. Moreover, every style has its own special way of solving these issues. cessing factories. It comprises a self-levelling material, an epoxy adhesive and a 100% epoxy grout, which is resistant to all the chem-icals you will find in a food pro-cessing plant.

Another adhesive, 125, has three functions: adhesive, anti-fracture membrane and crack sup-pression. It also helps to reduce the transmission of sound from onefloortoanother.Youcaneveninstall it directly over existing tiles.

Laticrete Supercap is a system especially for big projects. For ex-ample, if you have high rises, to transport the materials from the groundfloor to thefiftiethfloor, atruck pumps all the material to the floor. The installation isveryfast. This is the latest innovation. What are the current trends in bathroom design and ceramics?

The bathroom has now become as important as any other room in a home. In the bathroom you can relax, rest, read a book – just like in the other rooms.

How has bathroom design changed over recent years in terms of the materials or colours used?

Now the choice of colours is more natural and clear than 10 years ago. We prefer white and more natural colours, rather than the strong colours used in the past. And natural materials like ceram-ics and stone are used in bathroom collections. We focus on nature and the connection with nature and the environment, and this is expressed in architecture and interiors. The style is more essential and simple.

Are consumers beginning to spend more on bathrooms?

Yes, young people are giving more importance to the bathroom so are spending more on bathroom interiors and architecture.

This season seems to be about sea colours – blues and greens. Is this a current trend?

Yes, we were at the Salone del Mobilie in Milan in May and also there we saw a lot of blue and sea colours.

The designers of I-DEA studio have traced the evolution of bathroom design since the 90s. In the Italian city of Bologna, they presented a retrospective of sanitary ware, finishing materials and accessories. One of the creators of the exhibition, the designer Lorenza Golinelli, told MosBuild Magazine about modern trends in bathroom interiors.

French colourInnovative materials, technologies and bold French design form the basis of Ambiance Bain’s new collections. Managing director Stefan Ghirardello discusses the company’s production methods and variety of colour solutions.

What are your new products and innovations this season?

We are known for synthetic resin. We have three factories making synthetic resin, which is a mar-ble powder mixed with resin, with a gel coat on top. It is not only very easy to install, but also very easy to maintain, waterproof, anti-bacterial and all in one, so really easy to clean. It is available in about 23 dif-ferent colours and from January we will also have the possibility to have it in all the RAL colours as well.

We manufacture worktops, shower trays, which are made to measure, and wall cladding. So this is a veryinnovativeanddifferentwayofcombiningfurni-ture, shower and shower area. In terms of the rang-es we have, we have a really large selection. We don’t do classic - it’s all contemporary. We have a very large selectionof unitsof different sizesand colours. We

are known for the colours as well. This is also a big difference frommost of the Italian companies here, where it is mainly wood, white and grey. We are known for more colourful things.

We also have space saving solutions. The Russians who have come to our stand – we have an agent in Russia and sell quite a lot in Russia – they really like our space saving solutions.

Tempo is a more minimalist solution, with a big thick worktop that we have in diferrent sizes – you can mix and match with the colours. The sit-on basin can be synthetic resin, ceramic or other types. Eden is another collection, a lacquered unit and top of the range.Itislacqueredinmetallicfinishandavailableinplainfinish.IthasanelectricdrawerwithLEDlightinginside, a mirror at the bottom, glass on the side of the runners and real solid wood compartments. ufactured with a 45-degree angle on the carcass and the drawer, so it is really clean when it is closed. This is good for the Russian market. TheKitoicollectionisquitedifferentforusbecause

it is solid surface. We deliver it as a whole unit, it is always white, with a thermo-shaped basin and you choose the colour for the front. In terms of quality, we are the only French manufacturer equipped with a la-ser edging machine, which means that the edges are not glued but laser activated and bonded, so you can-not see the line with the glue and it is much more re-sistant to water and moisture. The quality is much higher. This collection also goes really well in Russia. Do youmake any products specifically for the

Russian market? We have an identity, in terms of the brand, which

we need to keep, but we do bear in mind other mar-

kets and needs when we develop products. How important is the Russian market for your

company? It is hugely important. Twenty percent of our turn-

over is exports. A huge share of that is the UK, be-cause we have been there for 18 years. The Russian market we started a couple of years ago and we now have a number of distributors in Russia. There is huge delay for us when we start on a market: we need to find the right people, show in the right places andthen generate sales, so it takes time. We have plant-ed the seeds, put lots of water on and fed them, and now they’re starting to grow. So the Russian market should be quite interesting. In fact, we have had our Russian agent on the stand for the four days of the exhibition and she has been busy non-stop.

BATHROOM INTERIORSTOP-10

Today, spacious bathrooms, where there is a shower cubicle and hydro-massage bath, a toilet and bidet, and sometimes even a sauna and mini-pool, are trendy; the most important consideration, however is the bathroom's atmosphere of relaxation. In line with the client's requirements,

architects and designers can create interiors that vary in both style and complexity. Shower cubicles are now 'invisible' if they have a solid glass surround. The available space is therefore expanded and specially-treated glass does not require any additional care.

COMFORT AND PRACTICALITYWhat do you want from your bathroom fittings and fixtures? First and foremost, they should be practical and made using contemporary materials. An ideal material would be one that is corrosion-and mould-resistant, can withstand high humidity and does not show the effects of wear and tear. We use the bathroom every day: taking a shower or lounging in a relaxing bath. Therefore the priorities remain comfort and practicality.
