Face aux demandes incessantes de ceux qui l’ont tant aimé et des nouvelles générations qui lui vouent encore une si grande admiration, son petit-fils, Nicolas Cerdan et sa femme Sophie, rééditent une collection de vêtements et d’accessoires de boxe que Marcel Cerdan avait développée aux Etats-Unis, l’année de son championnat du monde contre Tony Zale en 1948.

Une marque ressuscitée en hommage à l’homme et au Champion qui n’a pour ambition que d’offrir un produit légitime en signe de reconnaissance et de célébration.

Marcel Cerdan is considered as the best world champion boxer that Europe has produced (member of the “Hall of fame”).

The flamboyant rise to global fame by this man of the people, his athletic achievements, his romance with Edith Piaf and his tragic death in an air crash at the age of 33 have built a legend around Marcel Cerdan who remains one of France’s most cherished heroes.

In response to the endless requests by his fans and by the young generations who admire him, his grandson, Nicolas Cerdan, has re-edited a full boxing collection of clothing and accessories that Marcel Cerdan had developed in the United States in 1948, the year of his world championship victory against Tony Zale.

The brand brings back to life the man and the champion and offers legitimate clothes to celebrate this remarkable man. La vie du boxeur légendaire

Marcel Cerdan est né le 22 juillet 1916 à Sidi Bel Abbès en Algérie, berceau de la Légion Etrangère. De père d’origine espagnole et de mère française, il est le fils cadet d’une famille pauvre de cinq enfants (Armand, Antoine, Vincent et sa jeune soeur Clothilde).

En 1922, les Cerdan s’installent au maroc, à Casablanca, espérant trouver ainsi un meilleur avenir.

En 1924, poussé par son père, Marcel monte sur le ring pour la première fois à l’âge de 8 ans, à l’occasion d’une soirée où son frère Vincent doit se produire. Le petit Marcel victorieux gagne, à son grand désespoir, une paire d’espadrilles, au lieu du lot de consolation de son adversaire, une tablette de chocolat. Son père décide alors de le manager. Vers 1932, le père Cerdan se prend d’amitié pour Lucien Roupp, un parisien qui connaît la boxe et qui a aménagé, au premier étage de son garage, une salle d’entraînement. Harcelé par son père qui veut en faire un champion, Marcel, dont la passion pour le football est une source de conflit permanent, ira de plus en plus souvent se faire les poings chez lui.

A la demande de l’organisateur de spectacles de boxe parisien, Jeff Dickson, qui souhaite l’éprouver avant de le faire venir sur Paris, Marcel rencontre Edy Rabak, le rude « Carpentier tchèque », le 13 septembre 1937 à Casablanca. Cerdan le met K.O. à la 7ème reprise. C’est la porte ouverte à la renommée nationale… Il n’a que 21 ans.

La fulgurante ascension mondiale de cet enfant du peuple, son incroyable palmarès sportif, sa personnalité simple et amicale, l’ont fait entrer dans la légende.

La renommée nationale à 21 ans (1916-1937)

Marcel arrive à Paris et s’installe au camp d’entraînement du Vélo Club de Levallois du Père Ruinart à la Celle-Saint-Cloud. Il porte toujours sa culotte bleue à bande blanche que sa mère lui a confectionnée avec, dans sa ceinture noire, la médaille de l’enfant Jésus qu’elle y a glissée. Il gardera cette culotte toute sa vie, souvent portée sous une autre, plus appropriée pour les matchs publics.

Après avoir fait ses classes dans la capitale, Cerdan quitte Paris pour Casablanca où il rencontre Kouidri, ce qui lui permet de se positionner

comme Challenger pour le titre de Champion de France des Welters. Le combat a lieu le 21 février 1938 au stade Philip devant dix mille spectateurs, dix mille coeurs qui battent pour lui. Kouidri, l’Algérien au courage de légende, parvient à tenir les douze reprises en dépit de son épuisement évident, mais en vain : Marcel gagne à la fois ce troisième combat contre ce digne adversaire, son premier titre de Champion de France, et ce surnom qui le suivra désormais: « le Bombardier Marocain » (les Américains l’appellent « B52 »). Les supporters en folie bloquent les rues

de Casablanca la moitié de la nuit.

Le 20 mai 1938 c’est l’affrontement entre Cerdan et Gustave Humery. Après ce combat très difficile, qu’il remporte tout de même, Marcel prouve qu’il est aussi un encaisseur de première classe et devient définitivement le boxeur favori des Français.

Champion de France des Mi-Moyens (1938-1939)

Marcel Cerdan was born on July 22, 1916 in Sidi bel Abbes in Algeria – cradle of the Légion Etrangère. With a Spanish father and a French mother, he is the second son of a modest family of five children (Armand, Antoine, Vincent and his young sister Clothilde).

In 1922, the Cerdan family moved to Casablanca searching for a better future.

In 1924, Marcel climbs on a ring for the first time at the age of 8 to replace his sick brother

Vincent. The little Marcel wins the battle and is rewarded with a pair of sandals and to his great regret his opponent wins a consolation chocolate bar. His father decides to become his manager. Around 1932, the Cerdan father becomes friends with Lucien Roupp, a Parisian in close contact with the boxing world and who opened a training room on the second floor of his garage. Marcel dreams about a career in soccer and this generates permanent conflicts with his father who

pushes him with boxing. This hostile climate leads him to Lucien Roupp’s punching ball. The famous fight promoter Jeff Dickson wants to try Marcel before bringing him to the capital. Therefore, Marcel fights Edy Rabak known as the boorish “Czech Carpenter”, in Casablanca on September 13, 1937. Marcel knocks him out In the 7th round. The door to international stardom swings wide open ... Marcel is barely 21.

A national fame at 21 (1916-1937)

The dazzling rise of this man of the people, his athletic achievements, his friendly and pleasant personality have all gone toward building the legend that is Marcel today.

Marcel arrives in Paris and settles in the Biking Training Camp of Levallois of Father Ruinart located in la Celle-Saint-Cloud. He still wears the blue shorts with white stripes his mother made for him, with the medal of the baby Jesus hidden in the black belt. He will keep these shorts all of his life, often worn under other more adequate boxing shorts.

After his first training sessions in Paris, Cerdan returns to Casablanca to face Kouidri and this fight enables him to become the Challenger for the French Middleweight championship title. The fight takes place on February 21, 1938, at the Philips Stadium in front of ten thousand people, ten thousand hearts beating for him. Kouidri, legendary for his

bravery, succeeds in hanging on 12 rounds in spite of obvious exhaustion, but in vain. Marcel Cerdan wins his third battle against this worthy opponent and his first title as Champion of France, and from now on the nickname of «The Moroccan Bomber» will follow him all his career long. Ecstatic fans block the traffic all over Casablanca through the night.

On May 20, 1938, Cerdan prevails over Gustave Humery after a very difficult fight. With this victory, Marcel proves he is not only a great fighter, but also a first class opponent, and becomes the most popular boxer in France.

Welterweight Champion of France (1938-1939)

The boxer s legendary life

Le 20 février 1939 à la salle Wagram, Marcel affronte l’Italien Savero Turiello, Champion d’Europe des Welters qui doit s’incliner aux points. L’italien, fier, demande sa revanche, titre en jeu. Le combat aura lieu le 3 juin

au Vigorelli de Milan, au milieu des chemises noires de l’Italie fasciste, qui assistent à la défaite de leur champion, battu aux points en 15 reprises. Le public, en liesse, kidnappe Cerdan un long moment et déchire en

morceaux son peignoir bleu pour en faire des reliques.

Champion d’Europe des Mi-Moyens (1939)

La guerre (1939-1942)

On February 20, 1939, at the Salle Wagram, Marcel Cerdan faces the Italian Savero Turiello, European Welterweight Champion. Turiello goes down. The proud Italian asks

for a rematch, to fight for his title. The fight takes place June 3 at the Vigorelli in Milan, crowded with the fascist Black Shirts who see their champion brought down in the 15th

round. The wild crowd kidnaps Marcel during a long moment and they tear to pieces his blue robe to treasure it.

European Welterweight Champion (1939)

Le 6 septembre 1939, Cerdan est appelé sous les drapeaux au Maroc. Il est affecté dans la Marine à l’artillerie côtière, puis comme planton à l’Etat-Major. Son ascension professionnelle est stoppée. Le champion-nat d’Europe passé, il lui faudra attendre 7 ans son Championnat du Monde.

Au Maroc on assiste impuissant à l’évo-lution d’un conflit qui se passe ailleurs. On attend. L’année 1940, Marcel la passe surtout sur les terrains de football de Casablanca. Au printemps, il est sélectionné en foot-ball avec le Maroc pour affronter l’équipe de France. C’est la deuxième fois que Cerdan joue avec la sélection marocaine dont le capitaine s’appelle alors Larbi Ben Barek, la fameuse « perle noire » (17 fois international de 1939 à 1954).

Dans les premiers mois de 1941, le réseau de résistance « Libération » fait de plus en plus parler de lui. Un jour, Cerdan, qui ne cache pas ses sympathies pour

la France résistante, reçoit un émissaire. L’entretien se déroule dans le plus grand secret, mais on sait que Marcel s’engage à aider le réseau. Pour lui, il n’est pas question de basculer dans la

clandestinité, mais en revanche, tous les combats qu’il livre à partir de ce jour contribuent à alimenter les caisses de la résistance.

Marcel combat Raymond à Alger, Fortes à Oran et Kid Janas à Casablanca.

Il défend à nouveau son titre de Champion d’Europe contre Kouidri qui, pour la première et dernière fois, s’avoue vaincu avant la limite face à Cerdan. Aucun boxeur ne lui résiste longtemps.

En juin 1941, Marcel retourne en France pour vaincre Francis Blanchard à Marseille et les suisses Seidel à Vichy (au profit des prisonniers de guerre détenus en Allemagne) et Fernand Flury à Nice. Il retourne entre-temps brièvement à Alger pour vaincre Brun et Coureau.

Cerdan obtient alors l’assurance du Haut Commissaire aux Sports de pouvoir se rendre en Amérique et poursuivre sa carrière interrompue par la guerre. Mais l’année 1942 s’ouvre par la déclaration de guerre des Etats-Unis contre les forces de l’Axe. S’en

est fini des espérances amé-ricaines de Marcel. A défaut d’Amérique, Cerdan est invité à franchir la ligne de démarcation afin de paraître pour la première fois sur un ring de la zone occupée.

On September 6, 1939, Cerdan is called up to serve in the French army in his native Morocco. Appointed in the artillery division of the French Coast Guard, his boxing career is put on hold. The Europe championship behind him, he will have to wait 7 years for his World championship.

In Morocco, helplessly the people witness the spread of a conflict that takes place elsewhere. People wait, Marcel spends most of 1940 on the soccer fields of Casablanca. In the spring, he is selected by the Moroccan soccer team to play against France. It is the second time that Cerdan is chosen to play left field in the team led by captain Larbi Ben Barek, the famous «Black Pearl» (17 times international from 1939 to 1954).

Early 1941, the French Resistance group «Liberation» gains in popularity and at the

time Cerdan does not hide his sympathy for them. He meets a high emissary in the greatest of secret, but everyone knows of Marcel’s involvement in the Resistance. Marcel does not apply underground methods but all the fights’ benefits go to finance the Resistance.

Marcel fights Raymond in Algiers, Fortes in Oran and Kid Janas in Casablanca. He defends his European championship title against KouidrI who, for the first and last time, admits defeat before the end of the match. Not a single boxer is able to defeat Cerdan.

In June 1941, Marcel returns to France for his fight against Francis Blanchard in Marseille, the Swiss Seidel in Vichy (the benefits go to the prisoners of war held in Germany), and Fernand Flury in Nice. He briefly returns to Algiers to fight Brun and Coureau.

Cerdan receives permission from the High Commissioner of Sports to go to America to pursue his boxing career. But at the end of 1942, the Americans declare war against the Axis. His American hopes fade away with this news. Instead, he is invited to cross the demarcation line and compete in the occupied zone.

The war (1939-1942)

Sa rentrée parisienne a lieu le 26 avril 1942 contre Gustave Humery, le boxeur qui avait failli stopper sa carrière en mai 1938. Marcel met Humery K.O. au bout de 23 secondes de combat, y compris les 10 secondes comptées par l’arbitre. Littéralement assommé, il est transporté inanimé à l’hôpital Boucicaut. Marcel

se précipite à son chevet et y reste une partie de la nuit. Humery sort de son coma 36 heures plus tard. Il ne réapparaitra jamais plus sur un ring de combat. Après quelques combats victorieux contre Fernand Viez, Gustave de Ridder (K.O. en 85 secondes), Kid Janas et Ben Frély, Cerdan affronte Victor Buttin à Alger le 9

août 1942. Buttin, au tapis à la 8ème reprise, se met à gémir. L’arbitre a vu un coup bas et Marcel est disqualifié pour la seconde fois de sa carrière. Son adversaire venait d’être opéré de l’appendicite et n’aurait pas dû combattre.

A l’époque déjà, le sport était pris en otage par la politique. Cerdan apprend qu’il est déchu de son titre de Champion d’Europe parce qu’il n’a pas rencontré dans les délais prescrits son challenger officiel, l’Allemand Gustave Eder.

A la fin de l’été, l’état-major nazi de Paris leur fait savoir qu’il n’est pas hostile, bien au contraire, à un combat qui mettrait le titre européen en jeu, entre l’Espagnol José Ferrer, détenteur de la couronne, et Marcel Cerdan.

Le 30 septembre 1942, dans un Paris sous occupation allemande, Cerdan rencontre donc José Ferrer pour le titre de champion d’Europe des Welters devant seize mille spectateurs. Ferrer combat pour les Allemands, il est vêtu d’un peignoir orné d’une croix gammée et fait le salut fasciste aux quatre coins du ring. Il se fait huer par la salle archicomble tandis que Marcel, ovationné comme un libérateur, reste blême. Ce combat est celui de la France

contre l’occupant nazi. Ferrer, qui n’avait jusqu’alors jamais mis un genou à terre, ira quatre fois au tapis avant que l’arbitre n’arrête le combat à la première reprise au bout de 68 secondes !

Cerdan, nouveau Champion d’Europe, quitte la salle déchaînée sans même toucher sa bourse pour fuir l’invitation des officiers allemands chargés du sport à Paris.

Reprise du titre de Champion d’Europe des Mi-Moyens (1942)

In those days, politics already took sports hostage. It was announced to Cerdan that he had lost his European Welterweight title because he did not fight his official challenger, the German Gustave Eder, within the adequate time delay.

At the end of the summer, the Parisian Nazi headquarters allow and encourage a fight with the Spaniard Jose Ferrer who was holding the championship title at the time. On September 30, 1942, in the heart of the German-occupied Paris, Cerdan faces Jose Ferrer to fight for the Welterweight title in front of 16,000 spectators. Ferrer is fighting for the Germans; he is wearing a robe adorned with a swastika and gives the Nazi salute at the four corners of the ring. Ferrer is booed ferociously, and Marcel is greeted with an explosive ovation as if he was a liberator. Marcel is stunned. This fight has become a struggle between France and its occupiers. Ferrer, who has never been knocked-out in a fight, fell five times before the referee stopped the fight after 83 seconds in the first round.

The new champion Cerdan, rapidly left the ring without even taking his prize money to escape the invitation of the German officers in charge of the sport in Paris.

Reconquest of the European Welterweight Championship Title (1942)

Marcel se marie en janvier 1943 avec Marinette Lopez. Ils auront trois enfants: Marcel, René et Paul. Début 1944, il remporte plusieurs combats contre Bob Milano, Jack Toney, Tony James et Sampson.

Lors d’un premier Tournoi Interallié organisé à Alger dont il sort vainqueur, c’est le tour de Sammy Drouhin (K.O. 1), Adragna (K.O.8) et Joe Di Martino (K.O.2). 3 victoires fulgurantes expédiées en l’espace de 5 jours ! Les Américains n’en reviennent pas, Cerdan devient la terreur des Marines. Le 21 octobre il foudroie Ahmed Bouaya en moins de 3 minutes. Ce

combat n’est qu’une formalité pour Marcel, mais il a dû fournir des efforts considérables pour maintenir son poids et rester dans la catégorie Welters (mi-moyens).

Après ce combat, il décide de boxer dans la catégorie supérieure. Il a perdu en souplesse, détente et mobilité, mais il a gagné en puissance. Ses poings sont devenus des pilons et il sait dès lors qu’il ne doit plus rechercher qu’une seule chose sur le ring: l’efficacité – frapper pour abattre son adversaire le plus vite possible.

Le second Tournoi Interallié, à Rome, va lui permettre d’expérimenter sa

métamorphose sur un ring officiel.

Entre le 12 et le 16 décembre 1944, trois Américains s’inclin-ent devant Marcel qui remporte le tournoi : Clinton Perrey en 59 secondes, Floyd Gibson aux points, et Frankie Burney en deux reprises pour la finale. Ce dernier a tellement été malmené qu’il doit se faire hospitaliser le soir même. Il est indéniable qu’une partie du prestige de Cerdan outre- Atlantique est dû aux séries de victoires qu’il a accumulées au cours de cette manifestation.

Premier contact avec les Américains (1943-1944)

In January 1943, Marcel Cerdan marries Marinette Lopes. They have three children: Marcel, Rene and Paul. Early 1944, Cerdan wins several fights against BobMilano, Jack Toney, Tony Jameset Sampson .

He wins one of the first inter Allies Tournament organized in Algiers, he beats: Sammy Drouhin (1 K.O.) Adragan (8 K.O.) and Joe Di Martino (2 K.O.). Three extraordinary victories in five days – it’s hard to believe! Cerdan becomes the Marines’ man to fear. On October 21, he brings down Ahmed Bouaya in less than 3 minutes. This fight is only a formality for Marcel, but he had to

work extremely hard to maintain his weight and stay in the Welterweight category.

After this fight, Marcel decides to fight in the next category. He may have lost in fluidity and mobility but he has gained in power. His fists became real hammer blows and knew that from then on he only had to look for one thing in the ring: efficient knock-out to neutralize his opponents as quickly as possible.

The second Inter Allies Tournament organized in Rome allows him to test his new tactic.

Between the 12th and 16th of December 1944, three Americans lose against Marcel, who then goes on to win the tournament: Clinton Perry in 59 seconds, Floyd Gibson lost by decision and Frankie Burney in two rounds. Burney was so badly beaten down that he had to be hospitalized that same night. It is undeniable that these very fights propelled Marcel Cerdan to his legendary status.

En 1945, Marcel retourne enfin à Paris. Il vit chez Paul Genser, restaurateur de la rue d’Orsel, au pied du Sacré-Cœur à Montmartre, qu’il a connu lors de ses débuts à Paris. Il y trouve une atmosphère familiale qui lui sera précieuse.

Marcel est transformé. Joe Brun, Jean Despaux, Oscar Menozzi (ex-champion de France des mi-lourds, K.O.3), Edouard Tenet et l’anglais Tommy Davies (battu en 2 minutes

et 55 secondes) le constatent à leurs dépens. Cerdan, dont le masque devient blême dès qu’il franchit les cordes du ring, n’est plus le boxeur d’antan mais l’assommeur. Bien souvent il n’offre plus le spectacle de « l’escrimeur », mais celui du frappeur déchaîné résolu à donner le plus de puissance possible à ses coups. Ayant changé de catégorie, Cerdan n’est paré d’aucun titre officiel, même si on le reconnaît

comme le meilleur Welter européen. Le 30 novembre 1945, il s’empare enfin du titre de Champion de France des Super Welters que détenait Assane Diouf. Le 8 décembre 1945, Marcel obtient sa revanche contre Buttin. Il veut laver l’affront d’un précédent combat où il fut injustement disqualifié.

Champion de France des Poids Moyens (1945-1946)

In 1945, Marcel returns to Paris. He lives at Paul Genser’s, a restaurant owner, in the Rue Rosella at the foot of the Sacre- Coeur in Montmartre; he met him in his early career. This family atmosphere is very dear to him.

Marcel has changed. Joe Brun, Jean Despaux, Oscar Menozzi (French ex- Heavyweights champion, 3 K.O.), Edouard Tenet and the English Tommy Davies (losing after 2 minutes and 55 seconds) are witness of his supremacy to their great regret. Cerdan has become a real hammer . His art evolves – indeed he used to have the grace of fencing in him now his has the rage of a puncher.

Having changed categories, Cerdan had yet to receive an official title; even though he was recognized as the leading European Welterweight. On November 30, 1945, Cerdan finally wins the title of French

Super Welterweight Champion, a title Assaf Dioune used to hold. On December 8, 1945, Marcel gets his payback against Buttin. Marcel wants revenge for a former unfair disqualification against Buttin. Buttin is knocked out in the third round. The latter being a highly qualified boxer joins Roupp’s team with Marcel’s support. Buttin then became Marcel Cerdan’s principal sparring partner.

Marcel Cerdan has a string of victories, against Antonio Guides (K.O. in 2 minutes and 50 seconds), once again Tenet, Ferrer and Brun. On May 25, 1946, he will fight against Charron at the Parc des Princes with a ring holding court on the famous grass field. For the first time the French press described a fight as the «Fight of the

Century». Never before this event had a fight known

such fame. The match

took place in front of 37,000 people, soaking wet because of a terrible storm (which didn’t stop anyone from attending, as proved by receipts that evening of 15 million francs, quite a feat for the times). Cerdan, with an injured right hand and slower reflexes and rigid moves, fights to demolish and not to punch. The press and the public are disappointed, in spite of Marcel winning by decision.

Middleweight Champion of France (1945-1946)

Buttin est mis K.O. à la 3ème reprise. Boxeur de qualité, il rejoindra l’équipe de Roupp à la demande de Marcel et deviendra l’un de ses principaux sparring partners. Il enchaîne ensuite plusieurs victoires contre Antonio Guedes (K.O. en 2 minutes et 50 secondes), à nouveau Tenet, Ferrer et Brun, puis le 25 mai 1946, c’est le match tant attendu contre Charron au Parc des Princes qui accueille pour la première fois un ring sur sa pelouse. Pour la première fois aussi, la presse parisienne parle de « Match du Siècle ».

Jamais, avant cette date, un combat n’avait eu autant de publicité. La rencontre se déroule devant 37 000 personnes, trempées par un orage épouvantable (ce qui ne nuit en rien à la recette, astronomique pour l’époque: 15 millions de Francs). Cerdan, blessé à la main droite, dont les réflexes sont trop lents et les gestes trop lourds, fait un combat de frappeur, de démolisseur, mais pas de puncheur. La presse et le public sont déçus, malgré une victoire aux points.

A présent, pour s’élever dans la hiérarchie internationale, il faut être consacré par l’Amérique. Le contact est établi par Joe Longman, le fils spirituel de Lew Burston, bras droit à New York de Mike Jacobs, le puissant patron du Madison Square Garden et l’un des associés de la Twentieth Century Fox. Pour mesurer la valeur de Marcel Cerdan, les américains lui envoient Holman Williams, un des meilleurs poids moyens du monde. Mike Jacobs déclare alors à la presse : «si Cerdan bat Williams, je lui donnerai sa chance contre le vainqueur du match Tony Zale / Graziano». Malgré sa fracture à la main droite, Cerdan dispose de Williams aisément en dix reprises à Roland Garros le 7 juillet 1946 et gagne son « passeport » pour les USA. Après son match, Marcel assiste au spectacle d’Edith Piaf au Club des Cinq. C’est leur première rencontre.

Lew Burton désigne Georgie Abrams comme adversaire pour le bombardier marocain aux Etats-Unis. Avant le départ de Marcel, Roupp organise un combat de préparation pour voir si sa main tient le coup. Cerdan rencontre Jean Pankowlack le 20 octobre 1946 à la Croix de Berny et gagne par K.O. au 3ème round. Sa droite tient, il peut partir faire son premier combat en Amérique. La rencontre contre Abrams a lieu le 6 décembre au Madison. C’est l’un des

duels les plus pénibles de sa carrière. Marcel, malade, est habité par le doute et n’a pas la forme. Pourtant, en dix rounds, le Français gagne aux points. Il est si épuisé qu’à la fin de son combat l’arbitre doit l’entraîner au centre du ring et lui lever le bras en signe de victoire. Cerdan vient de conquérir New York et les cœurs

de toute l’Amérique. Les portes de la consécration suprême lui sont désormais ouvertes.

Paris explose de joie à l’annonce de sa victoire. La France, qui se remet petit à petit du traumatisme de la guerre, retrouve sa dignité par champion interposé. La légende

prend alors le pas sur la réalité. Cerdan devient un héros national. Le mythe est né.

Passeport pour l’Amérique (1946)

In order to reach to the international recognition, America must be conquered. Joe Longman, Lew Burston’s godson and Mike Jacobs’s right hand in New York, introduces Marcel. Let us not forget the latter is Madison Square Garden’s powerful boss and one of 20th Century Fox partner. To measure Marcel Cerdan’s talent, the Americans select Hollman Williams, one of the leading middleweight boxers in the world, to challenge him. Mike Jacobs declares to the press: «If Cerdan beats Williams, I will give him the chance to fight the winner of the “Tony Zale / Graziano” fight». Despite an injured right hand, Cerdan is victorious after the 10th round held at the Roland Garros Stadium on July 7, 1946. He

earned his passport to America. After the fight, Marcel attends the concert of Edith Piaf at the “Club des Cinq”, It is the first time he comes across Piaf.

Lew Burton chooses Georgie Abrams for Marcel’s next fight. Cerdan’s alias «The Moroccan Bomber» is how he is known in the United States. Before he leaves for the States, Roupp organizes a preparatory fight to see if Marcel’s hand can stand further punches. Cerdan faces Jean Panklovack on October 20, 1946 at La Croix de Berny and wins the fight by K.O. in the third round. He is fit for his American challenge. His fight with Abrams takes place on December 6, at the Madison Square Garden. It’s one

of his career’s most grueling fight. Marcel, sick, troubled by doubts and not in great shape. But in the 10th round he wins by decision. At the end of the fight Cerdan is so exhausted that the referee has to drag him to the center of the ring and raise his arm in victory. Cerdan had just conquered New York and the hearts of all Americans. Victory and fame lie before him.

Paris bursts with joy at the news of Marcel’s victory. France, recovering slowly from the tragedies of the war, regains a bit of national pride with Marcel Cerdan’s victory. Legend becomes reality, Cerdan becomes a national hero. The myth is born.

On February 2, 1947, at the Palais des Expositions de la Porte de Versailles, Marcel wins his European Middleweight title by knocking out his opponent, the Belgian Leon Fouquet, in the first round in 126 seconds. A week after the fight, Marcel leaves for London, to avenge Graster the «joke». His opponent is Britain’s second middle heavy weight. Bert Gilroy, who bites the dust in the fifth round.

Mars 1947, Marcel s’entraîne à Whitestone, près de New York, pour sa rencontre contre Harold Green au Madison Square Garden, match décisif pour son championnat du monde. Atteint d’une tendinite au coude droit et d’une foulure au pouce gauche, Cerdan aborde malgré tout son combat sereinement mais selon l’avis des médecins, la rencontre ne doit pas durer plus de 3 rounds, sinon les lésions pourraient être irréversibles. Le médecin de service (qui avait misé sur Green comme on le sut plus tard) lui fit une piqûre de novocaïne truquée, sans effet. Green sera quand même mis K.O. au second round. Cerdan, pour son 100ème combat professionnel, vient de remporter sa 56ème victoire par K.O.

Après une victoire-éclair à Montréal contre Bill Walker le 7 octobre 1947 (le combat dure moins de 3 minutes), Marcel affronte le 31 octobre à Chicago son troisième adversaire de taille en Amérique: l’estonien Anton Raadik, que la presse américaine présente comme le boxeur le plus dangereux des Etats-Unis. C’est l’ultime escalade

vers le championnat du monde. Sa célébrité entraîne une vie de plus en plus mondaine – c’est un personnage public que chacun s’arrache – loin des rigueurs de l’entraînement ; le match manque de lui échapper. En perdition à la fin du combat, Marcel se bat comme un automate contre un Raadik heureusement fatigué lui aussi. Pour la première fois de sa carrière, Cerdan met le genou à terre à 3 reprises. Il est déclaré, de justesse, vainqueur aux points.

Le 14 janvier 1948, Marcel rejoint Edith qui chante au « Versailles » à New-York. C’est le début de leur relation amoureuse.

De retour à Paris début 1948, Marcel gagne contre Giovanni Manca et Yanek Walzack avant d’affronter Lavern Roach le 12 mars 1948 à New York au Madison. Roach est la nouvelle vedette du Madison et certains pensaient, de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique, qu’il était de taille à couper les ailes aux ambitions du Français. Mais Cerdan est vainqueur par abandon à la 8ème reprise, bien que Roach aille au tapis à la 3ème

reprise et y reste plus de 32 secondes, selon Nat Fleischer, Directeur du magazine Ring, qui le chronométre. L’arbitre lui, n’en a compté que 8 !

13 jours plus tard, le 25 mars 1948, Cerdan bat Lucien Krawczyk avant de rencontrer Cyrille Delannoit le 23 mai 1948 au stade du Heysel à Bruxelles. Après un combat acharné, Marcel perd son titre de champion d’Europe alors qu’il pensait avoir gagné aux points. Consterné, il s’écroule de désespoir sur le ring.

Le 10 juillet, Marcel récupère son titre contre Delannoit alors qu’il s’est fracturé la main droite sur un sac d’entraînement, 48 heures avant la rencontre. Edith est avec lui à Bruxelles.

Retour à New-York (1947-1948)

In March 1947, Marcel trains in Whitestone, near New York preparing his fight against Harold Green at Madison Square Garden;a decisive match for his world championships. He suffers from an elbow tendonitis and a sprained right finger. Still, he faces the battle with serenity but is worned by doctors’ opinion that the fight cannot last more than three rounds if he does not want to risk irreversible injuries. The doctor in charge (who had secretly bet on Green, as it was discovered later on), administered a fake shot of novocaine which had no effect. This did not stop Cerdan from knocking out Green in the second round. Cerdan, in his 100th professional fight, receives his 56th victory by K.O.

After an electrifying victory in Montreal against Bill Walker on October 7, 1947 (in a fight only lasting 3 minutes), Marcel faces his next opponent on October 31, the renowned Estonian Anton Raadik. The American press describes Raadik as the most dangerous boxer at the time. It’s

his stairway to the world championship consecration. His growing celebrity makes him a public figure everyone wants to have at his party ; his life is full of temptations far away from the rigor and discipline of training: he is close to losing the fight. At the end of the fight, Marcel fights like a robot against Raadik, whom he hopes is also worn out. For the first time in his career, Cerdan goes down 3 times. He is declared winner by decision only.

On January 14, 1948, Marcel attends Edith Piaf’s concert at the “Versailles» nightclub in New York It is the beginning of their love affair.

Back in Paris in early 1948, Marcel wins his fights against Giovanni Manca and Yanek Walzack, before facing his next opponent, Laver Roach, on March 12, 1948 in the Madison Square Garden. Roach became the new star of Madison Square Garden and some people on the other side of the Atlantic thought that he had the power to cut short his French opponent’s winning

streak. But Cerdan won in the 8th round, although Roach went down in the third round and stayed there for 32 seconds, according to Nat Fleischer, director of the magazine «Ring». The referee counted only 8 seconds!

Thirteen days later, on March 25 1948, Cerdan won his fight against Lucien Krawczyk before facing his next opponent Cyrillic Delannoit on May 23 1948 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels. After a violent fight, Marcel loses his European Champion title although he had thought he had won by decision. Devastated, he falls to his knees and is in complete despair.

On July 10th, Marcel regains his title in a match against Delannois with a fractured right hand sustained 48 before during a training session. Edith Piaf is there to support him.

Back to New York (1947-1948)

Edith et Marcel partent pour les Etats-Unis. Elle vient incognito au camp de Loch Sheldrake où il s’entraîne.

Le 21 septembre 1948, le championnat du monde Cerdan-Zale se déroule au Roosevelt Stadium de Jersey City. Les sportifs du monde entier sont à l’écoute de la T.S.F. qui commente la rencontre. Malgré les qualités exceptionnelles de Zale, il sera promené à travers le ring.

Au 11ème round, il s’écroule sur un dernier crochet du gauche

de Cerdan, blessé au bras droit. Il est saoulé de coups, dont il ne se remettra jamais. On relève Tony Zale hébété. Il va s’écrouler dans son coin. Marcel est Champion du Monde. Le retour en France est triomphal. Paris lui fait un accueil de chef d’Etat. La foule se rue sur lui. Des Gobelins au Luxembourg, du boulevard Saint-Michel à la Concorde, de la Madeleine à l’Opéra, de la République à la Bastille, la liesse est telle que le cortège officiel avance difficilement.

A l’Hôtel de Ville enfin, Cerdan vogue littéralement sur un océan humain. La France relève la tête. Il a le privilège de rallumer la flamme du Soldat Inconnu à l’Arc de Triomphe, et est reçu à l’Elysée par le Président Vincent Auriol.

On September 21, 1948, the world championship match of Cerdan vs Zale takes place at the Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. Sportsmen all over the world listen religiously to the T.S.F broadcasting the fight. In spite of Tony Zale’s extraordinary talent, Cerdan clearly leads the fight.

On the 11th round, Tony Zale falls after one of Cerdan’s left hooks, while Cerdan

has an injured right arm. Zale is showered with constant punches, from which he will never recover. When Tony Zale is helped up to his feet, he is stunned. He collapses in his corner. Cerdan is the world champion. His return to France is triumphant. Paris lays out the red carpet waiting for the national hero. The crowd is delirious. From the Luxembourg Gardens to the Boulevard St Michel to the Place de la Concorde, to

the Place de la Madeleine and the Opera, from the Place de la Republique to the Bastille, the crowd is so intense and dense that the official procession can hardly advance through the crowded avenues. At the Hotel de Ville, Cerdan literally struggles his way through an ocean of people spread everywhere. France is proud. He has the privilege to light the flame of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe and is

welcomed at the Elysee palace by the President Vincent Auriol.

World Middleweights Champion (1948-1949)

L’Amérique, jalouse d’avoir vu un titre mondial lui échapper, propose à Cerdan un challenger, Jake La Motta. Certains disent qu’il est le poulain de la mafia très puissante dans le milieu de la boxe aux Etats- Unis.

Comment expliquer ce choix autrement, alors que La Motta n’est que le 10ème poids moyen mondial, et que ses combats ont été pour le moins douteux ? Lui-même ayant admis dans son autobiographie avoir triché sur l’instigation de la Mafia. D’ailleurs, les organisateurs new-yorkais refusent le contrat et c’est finalement au Briggs Stadium de Détroit, en plein air, que se déroule la rencontre.

Le 17 juin 1949, Marcel Cerdan perd son titre de Champion du Monde contre Jake La Motta. Ce soir-là, les organisateurs de Detroit ont avancé le combat de Cerdan d’une demi-heure. Marcel n’a pas le temps de s’échauffer plusieurs rounds comme il le fait d’habitude. Aux Etats-Unis, tout est neuf à chaque combat: tapis de sol, chaussures, gants…

Dès le coup de gong, La Motta jaillit de son coin et se précipite sur Marcel. Sur une poussée, Cerdan glisse et pour se rattraper, tend son bras gauche en arrière. Il se luxe l’épaule. Il ne peut plus gagner, La Motta ne le lâche pas et sa douleur est trop vive. Marcel veut continuer, mais au 11ème round il abandonne sur les conseils de son manager.

Malgré sa défaite, la foule parisienne accueille son champion préféré en héros. Cette félicité du public, en dépit de la défaite, rend à Cerdan son courage et la volonté de reconquérir son titre.

Prétextant une blessure à l’épaule droite, La Motta annule leur match revanche du 28 septembre. Une nouvelle date est prise: Le 2 décembre 1949 au Madison Square Garden.

Marcel décide d’achever son entraînement sur place au camp Loch Sheldrake à quelques kilomètres de New-York.

Au mieux de sa forme, certain de sa victoire, il déclare aux lecteurs de France-Soir le 26 octobre, la veille de son départ pour les Etats-Unis: « En ce qui concerne le résultat de mon match contre La Motta, je serai très affirmatif: la question d’une défaite ne peut pas se poser. Je dois battre La Motta, je le battrai. Une fois pour une bêtise, un accident stupide, La Motta m’a possédé… C’est déjà beaucoup trop. En fait, je prépare ce championnat depuis plus de 6 mois. Je suis déjà bien. Je serai parfait le 2 décembre ».

La catastrophe de Détroit (1949)

America, jealous and not willing to share the title, proposes a challenger, Jack La Motta. Some say that he is a protégé of the Mafia, who had infiltrated the world of boxing in the US.

How else to explain this choice of opponent, when La Motta ranks only 10th in the world in the middleweight category? Further, La Motta’s victories against Billy Fox and Villemin were suspect even at that time, and he later admitted in his own biography having cheated and been pressured by the Mafia. In fact, the New York organizers refused the contract and it was finally at the Briggs Stadium in Detroit, in open air, that La Motta and Cerdan are face to face... It was June 17 1949, and Marcel Cerdan loses his World Championship title against Jack La Motta. That night, the organizers of the fight in Detroit had moved the time of the fight half an hour ahead of schedule.

Marcel did not have the time to warm up as he always does . In the United States, everything is new for each fight: the floor, the shoes, the gloves. As soon as the gong sounds, La Motta springs out of his corner and attacks Cerdan. Cerdan slips and hurts his shoulder. He cannot win. La Motta does not let him go and his pain grows. Marcel wants to continue but at the 11th round, he gives up the fight advised by his manager.

Despite his defeat, the Parisian crowd greets its champion like a hero. This endless love and encouragements of his public give him the strength and the will to regain his title.

Pretending to have an injured left shoulder; La Motta cancels the fight against Cerdan scheduled for the 28th of September which is postponed to December 2, 1949 at the Madison Square Garden.

Marcel decides to train at Loch Sheldrake camp, a few miles from New York. In the best of shapes and certain of his victory, Marcel Cerdan declares to the readers of the French publication France Soir on the 26th of October, the night before he leaves for America: «The outcome of my fight with La Motta will be a victory for me, without any doubt, I will not be defeated, I will win. I must win against La Motta, I will win. I lost before against La Motta for a stupid accident and La Motta took advantage of me… It’s too much. I have trained hard for this fight for the past six months, I will win! ».

Disaster in Detroit (1949)

Après un match-exhibition à Troyes, sur un coup de fil d’Edith Piaf, Cerdan change son départ pour New-York en bateau pour l’avion, afin de la rejoindre plus vite. Le vol d’Air France de 21 h est complet. Un couple en voyage de noce, leur offre leurs places de tout coeur. Marcel peut embarquer in extremis avec Joe Longman et Paul Genser.

Dans la nuit du 27 au 28, le Constellation FDAZN s’écrase sur le pic de Rodonta aux Açores, avec 48 passagers dont la célèbre violoniste Ginette Neveu. Ce sera le premier accident enregistré par Air France sur la ligne Paris – New-York, après plus de 2 000 traversées. Il n’y aura aucun survivant. Marcel avait 33 ans.

L’avion-cargo « Liberator », qui ramène le corps des Açores, se pose sur l’aéroport de Casablanca. On installe Marcel dans une chapelle ardente au Stade Lyautey. Durant deux jours et deux nuits, toute la ville défile devant le catafalque. Devant sa dépouille, les luttes séculaires cessent. Unis dans la même douleur, les Musulmans, les Israélites, les Catholiques, les Arabes, les Espagnols,

les métropolitains… Tous communient dans la même peine. Cerdan remporte une dernière victoire. Peut-être la plus belle.

Le 18 novembre 1949, Marcel Cerdan reçoit l’ordre de la Nation avec la citation suivante: « Champion de boxe, dont la conduite pendant la guerre et la juste popularité en ont fait l’une des figures les plus exemplaires du sport français ». Trois jours plus tard, la Légion d’Honneur lui est décernée.

Sa tragique disparition (1949)

After an exhibition match in Troyes, a phone call from Edith Piaf changes Marcel’s plans deciding to join Piaf, performing in New-York, as quickly as possible and the boat is replaced by the plane. The 9 p.m. Air France flight is full. Honored, honeymooners offer their tickets to Cerdan. Marcel can take the flight right away along with Joe Longman and Paul Genser.

During the night of October27-28, the Flight FDA-ZN crashes in the Pico de Vara on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, with 48 passengers on board, amongst them the famous violinist Ginette Neveu. This was Air France’s first air disaster between Paris and New York, after more than 2 000 flights. There were no survivors.

Marcel was only 33 years old. The cargo-plane «Liberator» brings back Marcel Cerdan’s body from the Azores to

Casablanca. His body is laid out at a chapel in the Lyautey Stadium. Over two days and two nights the whole town shares the same grief. All faiths and ethnicities are present: Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Spaniards, all communities united in the same deep loss. Marcel Cerdan reaffirms his last, most stirring victory.

On November 18, 1949, Marcel Cerdan receives the National Order with the following quote: «Boxing champion, whose exemplary conduct during war time and his legitimate fame made him one of the most important figures in the world of Sport in France». Three days later, Marcel Cerdan was awarded the medal of the Legion d’Honneur.

His tragic death (1949)

Cerdan gagnait par ses qualités physiques et intellectuelles: sa garde parfaite et son intelligence à juger le style qu’il devait prendre par rapport à celui de son adversaire ; il avait une magnifique musculature, une puissance, un coup d’oeil, une rapidité, une précision hors du commun. Il innovait avec des coups que personne n’avait jamais portés. Il touchait partout, sous tous les angles, dans n’importe quelle position (la sienne, en « crouch », le lui permettait) et cela, juste pour empêcher son adversaire de réfléchir. Puis d’un seul coup, il voyait l’ouverture et le coup partait avec une vitesse fantastique, une puissance exceptionnelle. Marcel était d’ailleurs appelé le Bombardier Marocain car dès le coup de gong, il était en action et frappait sans arrêt, sous tous les angles, sans laisser à son adversaire une chance de s’en sortir. Il gagna 60% de ses combats de cette manière.

Ce style était dû à sa morphologie, au bon écart de ses jambes, qu’il conservait à tout moment. Ses obliques, ce muscle puissant, faisaient qu’il pouvait faire partir son coup en souplesse et le faire revenir encore plus vite qu’il n’était parti: c’est ce

qu’on appelle le « punch ». Il pouvait facilement tripler un crochet ou un uppercut du gauche. C’était un génie dans son art.

Dumb Dan Morgan, un des plus grands managers de boxe qui a vu boxer tous les grands depuis John Sullivan, le premier champion du monde poids lourds, affirme que Marcel Cerdan est un des trois boxeurs complets de sa décade, avec Will Pep et Ray Sugar Robinson. « Par boxeur complet, j’entends celui qui excelle en tout – vitesse d’exécution, art de la boxe pure, résistance aux coups et puissance des deux mains. Cerdan est un boxeur de combinaison, capable de lancer en succession rapide une série de quatre ou cinq coups aussi puissants les uns que les autres, frappant tous des objectifs différents, choisis avant le déclenchement de la série. Chacun de ses coups secouait l’adversaire parce que Cerdan était un puncheur redoutable ».

En 1949, le champion de boxe W.C. Herring estimait que Marcel tirait sa puissance de frappe plus de la rotation du tronc que du support de sa jambe droite. Il avançait également que Cerdan, outre le menton et le plexus

solaire, avait découvert un troisième point faible: le foie. « Son crochet en deux temps, en remontant foie et menton, ou en descendant, menton et foie, lui faisait gagner la plupart de ses combats ».

La plupart des boxeurs qui ont tenu jusqu’à la limite devant Cerdan n’ont plus jamais reboxé de leur vie: Abrams, Roach (interdit de ring, il passa outre et mourut à son combat suivant), Zale et tant d’autres.

As soon as he heard the bell, he was on his feet and punched endlessly, leaving no chance to his opponent. He hit everywhere, from every angle, in different positions and all of this to stop his opponent from even thinking what to do next. Marcel saw openings and went for them with lightning speed. An invincible hammer. He would win 60% of his fights that way. His ”punch” is legendary and one of the most prestigious managers Dum Dan Morgan said of him “He is one of the three best boxers ever known”. He was a genius in his art and an angel in his heart.
