With energy prices soaring and global data center power costs already exceeding $80 million annually, leading network services provider CenturyLink realized it was essential that they find a way to reduce the amount they were spending on power and cooling. But they also knew if wasn't as simple as just raising the temperature in their data centers: without proper monitoring and control those increased temperatures could potentially lead to costly downtime.

In this presentation, CenturyLink discusses why they chose RF Code to provide the enhanced visibility they needed, providing:

- An easy to deploy, affordable, power-and-network independent sensor solution

- The power and scalability they need to keep pace with their growing data center demands

- ROI in less than a year, with accrued annual savings in the millions of dollars each year thereafter

•  2011: Savvis merged with CenturyLink •  Over 50 data centers in North America, Europe and Asia. The electrical cost to operate these data centers in 2011 was over 80 million dollars

Introduction and Background •  CenturyLink – 3rd largest telecommunications company in the

United States •  Recognized as a leader in the network services market by

technology industry analyst firms •  A global leader in Cloud infrastructure and Outsourced and

Hosted IT solutions for enterprise customers.

How to sustain optimal IT equipment reliability and not over cool the data center therefore wasting energy and money? Too hot and equipment reliability suffers… Too cool and energy bills skyrocket… For every 1ºF that rack air intake temperature is raised, 2% of the annual power costs can be saved.

The Challenge

How to sustain optimal IT equipment reliability and not over cool the data center therefore wasting energy and money? ASHRAE TC 9.9 allowable range permits 18ºC to 27ºC (64.4ºF to 80.6ºF) at the server inlet. How can we comfortably raise our temperatures and eliminate any risk of equipment reliability and SLA Violations?

The Challenge

Developing a Solution

Needs •  Visibility at the Server Inlet •  Wireless Solution •  Easy to Deploy/Move •  Easy to Integrate with BMS •  Long Lasting Battery Life •  Aesthetic •  Accurate •  Secure Network •  Reliability

Developing a Solution Needs •  Visibility at the Server Inlet, Wireless Solution, Easy to Deploy/

Move, Easy to Integrate with BMS, Long Lasting Battery Life, Aesthetic, Accurate, Secure Network, Reliability

Many products were considered and several products were evaluated in depth. RF Code was the most superior technology and was the only product that fully met all of our needs.

The Present •  Server-level temperature & humidity data highlighted inefficiencies •  Safely raised AHU’s Supply Air Temperatures so reducing

humidification

Before After AHU Supply Air Temperature

55ºF 68ºF

Average Server Inlet Temperature

67ºF 76ºF

Use of Real-Time Sensor Data •  Reset CRAH Supply Air Temperature through our BMS System •  Controlling Humidification at the Server Inlet through our BMS System. Real-time visibility of environmental data has allowed us to open our Economizer window and allow for thousands of additional hours of free cooling.

Moving Forward With the success of our first deployment of the RF Code Solution we installed the solution at 14 more sites in 2013. We have 11 Sites scheduled to receive Wireless Sensors in 2014. •  Expanding RF Code throughout CenturyLink portfolio

•  Evaluating the use of RF Code’s asset management and power consumption solutions

Results

Product cost for 65,000 sqft of Raised Floor Space was $110,000 - 40% was for integration of RF Code into our BMS system Environmental data exposed over $2.9 Million of potential annual savings Savings attributed to raising temperatures in 2013 was $120,000. This project had an ROI of 11 months The projected annual savings for the sites planned in 2014 is $1,205,000.
