MESSAGEFROMTHEDIRECTOR
I would like to invite you, by means of thisAnnual Report,which uses the 2017‐2021UPStrategicPlanasabroadroadmap,totakethatfirst step and join the 2017 journey of theCentreforAAC.ThisAnnualReportisakeytoolforsharingthejourneythroughdatapointsthatprovide insight into our recent progress withregardstoresearch,teachingandlearning,andcommunity engagement projects, designed toimpactontheeconomicandsocialdevelopmentof persons with disabilities – especially thosewithsignificantcommunicationdisabilities.Theinformation presented here is not merely aglimpseintoour2017trajectory,however;itisalsoatestamenttoalongstandingcommitmenttoourcorevalues:respect,diversity,teamwork,andintegrity.
Wherever improvements have occurred, theyareduetothecommitmentofgreatpeople,anditisrewardingtoseethatmanyofthenamesinthisAnnualReporthavenotchangedsincetheprevious year, showing a high degree ofcontinuity and stability in terms of our keyinitiatives, despite a period of change in thebroader academic landscape. I thank myoutstanding colleagues at the Centre, ourcommitted students and loyal alumni, thegenerous local and international partners inacademia, government, theprivatesector,andnon‐profit organisations, as well as ourAdvisory Board and the management andexecutive of the University, specifically ourDean,ProfVasuReddy,and thedeputydeans,ProfHennieStanderandProfMaxiSchoeman–atrulydependableforce.Together,theyenablefact‐based leadership, which is becomingincreasinglyimportanttothefutureoftertiaryeducation.Thefirstpointofpauseonthejourneyiswiththe applied and translated research initiativesandthecontinuingpursuitofimpactandmeritby the researchers in the Centre who are allexceptionalintheirrespectivenicheareas.These include initiatives to boost researchlinkages between the Centre and leadinginstitutions in Sweden, the United Kingdom,
IndiaandtheUnitedStates,aswellassixfundedprojectssupportedbytheFogartyInternationalCenter andNational Institute of Deafness andOtherCommunicationDisordersMobileHealthInitiative, Swedish Science and TechnologyResearchCollaboration, theNationalResearchFoundation of South Africa, the NationalInstitutefortheHumanitiesandSocialSciences,and the Indian Council of Social ScienceResearch.Thevalueadded throughourglobalrelationships and stature is not limited toresearchalonebutalsoentwinedwithteachingand learning, and it is therefore rewarding tonotethatnolessthan13internationalvisitorswerehostedin2017.Thegraduationjourneycanbechallenging,butour137enrolledstudentshavethesupportofcommitted lecturers who are dedicated tocultivatingapositivestudentexperience–fromHonourslevelallthewaythroughtoPhDlevel.We have enabled our students, who aretypically working adults, to gain a career‐relevant education through offering multi‐professional hybrid post‐graduate degreeprogrammes, enabling them to become game‐changinggraduates.This has opened new opportunities for them,witharippleeffectontheirfamiliesandfuturegenerations.Wethereforecelebrateeveryone

of the31graduates andeverymemberof ourteam who worked to support their successthroughout the years. However, maintainingourappealtodedicated,ambitiousstudentsandattracting more international students,specifically students from across the Africancontinent, requires continued thoughtfulplanningandvigilance,andthusremainsafocusarea. Our staff and students compete stronglyforexternalfundingandthereforeweareproudofthe24highlycompetitivebursariesawardedtoourstudents.TheCentre’s journeyalsowarrantsa focusonourcommunityengagementendeavours,whichareseenasanaturaloutcomeofourresearchandteachingandlearninginitiativestoensurelocal relevance and impact of our offering.Personswithsignificantdisability,theirfamiliesand support networks, lie at the heart of ourmission.Whilecommunityengagementisoftenregarded as a student‐driven activity, it isconceptualisedandimplementedintheCentreby staff who regard it as the sharing of our
professional knowledge and therefore it willremainhighonourlistofpriorities.In2017,11awareness‐raisinginitiativeswereconductedinSouth Africa and on the continent (includingNamibia, Lesotho and Kenya). Sharingresources via social media (our website,Facebook,Twitterandemaillistservs)hasalsobeen highly successful and in 2017, weaccumulated more than 1500 followers fromacrosstheglobe.WeareconfidentthateachonewhoreadsthisAnnualReportwillbemetwithaclearpictureofour2017 journey,showcasingasmall teamdedicated to relentless, continuousimprovement – constantly striving towardscreating a voice for the most vulnerablemembersofoursociety.Intheworldofdisability,silencecanneverbegolden.

DrEnsaJohnsonisinvolvedasco‐supervisorwithDrKarienMostert,fromtheDepartmentofPhysiotherapyattheUniversityofPretoriainundergraduateresearchstudiesofphysiotherapystudents.Thefourth‐yearPhysiotherapyresearchgroup(MsSBosch,MsLEksteen,MsKSatekge,MsEOosthuizen,andMsMVos)successfullycompletedtheirprojectentitled“Developmentofavisualscheduletoimproveunderstandingofahomeexerciseprogrammeforchronicnon‐specificlowbackpain”.Thethird‐yearphysiotherapyresearchgroup(MsALouw,MsBJacobs,MsMBone,MsKMogaleandMsTMagwai)completedandsubmittedtheirproposal,entitled“PictorialAidstoEnhanceExercisePerformanceinCommunitiesofPretoria,SouthAfrica:ARandomisedControlledTrial”totheResearchEthicsCommitteeoftheFacultyofHealth.Ethicsapprovalwasreceived,andthisgroupwillcontinuewiththeirprojectintheirfourthyear,withDrJohnsonasco‐supervisor.DrEnsaJohnsonactedasateachingpracticementorlecturerfortwofinal‐yearBEdstudentsfromtheDepartmentofEarlyChildhoodEducation,UniversityofPretoria(MsKBentleyandMsAVorster).DrAleciaSamuelspresentedalectureonEarlyChildhoodPlayBasedAssessmenttoeightstudentsenrolledintheMaster’sinSocialWork(Play‐BasedIntervention)intheDepartmentofSocialWorkandCriminology.Theaimofthelecturewastogivestudentsknowledgeabouthowtoconductanauthenticplay‐basedassessmentforyoungchildreninneedofintervention.Thelecturewaswellreceivedandthefacilitatoroftheprogramme,DrLianaLeRoux,hasaskedthatitberepeatedin2018.
2.1.3 CAACinvolvementinacademicprogrammesofotheruniversities
Twenty‐twostudents(enrolledfortheirfinalyearinSpeech‐LanguageTherapyandAudiologyatSefakoMakgathoUniversity)andtheirlecturer,ProfAnna‐MarieWium,visitedtheCentreon25April2017fora‘hands‐on’sessionwithAACtechnology.DrKerstinTönsingarrangedandfacilitatedthisinteractionsession.ThreepersonswhouseAACsharedtheirexperiencesandexpertisewiththestudents:MsConstanceNtulisharedhowAACmadeitpossibleforhertofindajobandsharedabouthernewroleasthemotherofababygirl;CarlavanNieuwenhuizenspokeaboutherpassiontowritepoems,hercompletionofamake‐upcourseandherbusinessenterprises;andZainabOmarexplainedhowAACmakesitpossibleforhertoparticipateintheschoolinhercommunityandconnectwithfriends.Zainab,whoisonly13yearsold,alsowarnedthatpatienceisneededinengagingwithsomeoneusingAAC,and,sadly,peopledonotalwayshaveit!StudentswerealsogivenabriefintroductionaboutAACtechnologyandthenhadthechancetohandleandusesomeofthecommunicationaidsandinteractwithConstance,CarlaandZainab.Thestudentsalwayscommentaboutthelife‐changingexperienceofseeinghowpeoplewhouseAAClivefulllivesandappreciatebeinggiventheopportunitytointeractwiththem.Oneofthestudents,MsKambuhle,commented:“FromthebeginningofthepresentationwherewewereintroducedtoAACusers,IwasblownawaybythepositiveimpactthatAAChasonpeople’s

lives.Thiswasaneye‐openingexperienceinthesensethatfromthisIsawtheimportanceofmyroleasaspeechtherapistinassistingthosethathavecommunicationdifficultiesthroughtheuseofAAC.ItwasreallygoodtohearthosewhouseAACspeakabouttheirownpersonalexperiences…Itwasreallyamazingtoseepeoplewithadisabilityachievesomuch.”AspartofherongoingcollaborationwithJönköpingUniversityinSweden,DrAleciaSamuelstaughtandexaminedtwoonlinemodulesintheInterventionsinChildhoodMaster’sProgrammehostedintheSchoolofEducationandCommunication.Inaddition,shesupervisedtwomaster’sstudents,LenaAlbrechtandKatarinaCelic,whoundertooksystematicreviewsaspartoftheirthesismoduleinthisprogramme.Thetheses,entitled“Playinterventionssupportingthesocialandemotionaldevelopmentofpreschoolchildrenwithexternalisingemotionalandbehaviouraldifficulties“and“TeacherandparentsimplementedinterventionstargetingsymbolicplayofpreschoolagedchildrenwithAutismSpectrumDisorder”,canbedownloadedfromJönköpingUniversityLibrary.ProfJuanBornmanpresentedalectureon15November,entitled“Children’sRights:Implicationsforyoungchildreninpovertysettings”toagroupofeducationstudentswhoworkwithyoungchildrenatJönköpingUniversity.Thelecturewasfollowedbyapaneldiscussionwithquestionsfromthestudentsintheafternoon.MsKarinvanNiekerkpresentedaguestlectureon22JuneattheUniversityoftheWitwatersrandtotheMaster’sinOccupationalTherapystudents.ThestudentsweregivenanintroductiontoAACandwerealsoexposedtocertaininterventionaspects.From5to9June,ProfJuanBornmanpresentedaseriesoflecturestopostgraduatestudents(master’sandPhDlevel)attheDepartmentofSpecialNeedsEducationatKenyattaUniversityinNairobi,Kenya,onAAC,researchandacademicwriting.ThisprojectwassponsoredbyPAGEL.

AACandmulti‐lingualismTheoverallaimoftheprojectistodesignandtestAACsystemsforpersonswithnon‐EnglishandmultilingualbackgroundsinSouthAfrica.In2017,twomanuscriptsreportingontheviewsofserviceprovidersandadultsusingAACregardingmultilingualAACimplementationwerefinalised.Inaddition,amaster’sstudentcompletedastudytodetermineanisiZulucorevocabulary,whiletwoothermaster’sstudentscommencedstudiesonSepediandAfrikaanscorevocabularyrespectively.Lastly,astudycommencedaimedatdeterminingwhether3‐5‐year‐oldbilingualchildrencanlearntoassociateagraphicsymbolwithwordsintwolanguages.Specifically,theaimistotestwhetherchildrenspontaneouslytranslatetheglossofasymbollearntinonelanguagetoanotherlanguage.Thisinformationwillassistin

Beingabletoidentify,labelandcommunicateaboutemotionsisanimportantskillforyoungchildren.Itlaysthefoundationfordevelopingsocialskills,navigatingrelationshipsandbecominghealthyandhappyadults.OurMA(AAC)studentsgave67minutesoftheirtimethisyeartomakevisualsupportmaterialtohelpyoungchildren
withdisabilitieslearnaboutandcommunicatetheiremotions.Thestudents'creativitywasevidentinthestorybooks,emotionpuzzles,picturesymbolsandtheemotion'trafficlights'(usedtohelpchildrenmonitorandregulatetheiremotions)produced.ThematerialwasdonatedtoChrysalisPreschoolforchildrenaged3‐6withspecialneeds,astheyhadearlieridentifiedsuchmaterialsasoneoftheirneeds.4.1.2 FofaCommunicationEmpowermentProgramme–MakingconnectionsRelationships–humanconnection–maketheworldgoround.Forpeoplewithseverecommunicationdifficulties,makingtheseconnectionsisnotalwayseasy.Discrimination,stigmaandfalseperceptionsbysocietyoftenmakeitdifficultforthemtobeseen,tobeheard,andtohaveachanceto‘justsayhi’.‘Makingconnections’wasthethemeofthisyear’sFofaCommunicationEmpowermentProgramme.Thisyear,sixyoungadultswithcommunicationdisabilities,fourreturningparticipantsoftheprogrammeandtwomentorswhoweregraduatesfromtheprogramme,attendedtheweekfrom28Augustto1Septemberoncampus.Theweek’sprogrammeincludedactivitiessuchastoastmaster’strainingbyMrIanFlintfromToastmaster’sSouthAfrica,acampustourpresentedbystudentsfromtheDepartmentofHistoricalandHeritageStudies,andtrainingoncrowdfundingandfundraising.StudentsfromHouseHumanitiesassistedtheparticipantstoprepareforthe‘MakingConnections’eventheldon1September.StudentsfromtheRagcommitteeofHuisMaroela,togetherwithgraphicdesignersOliviaandSuzanneLoots,assistedtheparticipantsinpaintingthe“GraffitiWall”withcatchyslogansaimedatbreakingthestigmaarounddisability.ThreeUPstudentswithdisabilityalsosharedtheirexperiencesofstudyingatUPwiththeparticipants,anditwasclearthattheirstoriesresonatedwiththeyoungadults.
Theweekculminatedwiththe‘Talk‐Without‐A‐Voice”awarenesseventon1September(coincidingwithUP’sAnti‐DiscriminationWeekandCasualDay).Onthatday,thePiazzaoftheUniversityofPretoriawasabuzzwithinteractions,astheparticipantssteppedouttoconnectwiththecampuscommunity.Formanystudentsandstaffthiswasthefirsttimetheyinteractedwithsomeoneusingothermethodsofcommunication,suchasiPads,laptops,andtabletsthatmaketypedtextaudiblethroughsyntheticspeechprocessors.Itmayalsohavebeenthefirsttimetheywereconfrontedwithquestionssuchas–‘Would

communicateverbally.StudentswereremindedthatpersonswhouseAACcanmakedecisionsforthemselves.4.1.4DevicespracticaldayThethird‐yearstudentsoftheDepartmentofSpeech‐LanguagePathologyandAudiologyendedtheirAAClecturesonahighnote,withapracticalsessionon25August.Studentswereprovidedtheopportunitytoputtheoryintopracticeandtryoutthevariousspeech‐generatingdevicesthatindividualswithlittleornofunctionalspeechusetoeitheraugmenttheirspeechorasanalternativemodeofcommunication.CarlavanNiewenhuizenandZainabOmar,whocommunicatethroughtheuseofspeech‐generatingdevices,inspiredthestudentswiththeirstoriesofperseverance,hopeandcourage.DesiraePillay,anassistivetechnologyadvisorfromInclusiveSolutions,andparentofadaughterwhousesAAC,toldthestudentsaboutsomeofthelatesttechnologythatassistspeopletocommunicateandimprovethequalityoftheirlives,andalsodemonstratedthelatesteye‐trackingtechnology.StudentsandstaffoftheCAAConceagainrealisedthepowerofbeingabletocommunicate.
