Environment Minister Bess Price inspects the new aquarium at Alice Springs Desert Park Picture: JUSTIN BRIERTY Creature feature given a new life Corey Sinclair PARENTS of Central Australia have been urged to take advantage of upgrades to an animal enclosure at Alice Springs Desert Park by Minister Parks and Wildlife Bess Price. ‘‘It’s important for people to be able to come to the Desert Park and see how spectacular these animals are,’’ Mrs Price said. ‘‘It’s great for children as well to learn a bit about Central Australia. ‘‘I urge all parents and local people to bring their children to be able to be in touch with nature.’’ Mrs Price inspected the upgraded enclosures at the Alice Springs Desert Park on Tuesday morning. The enclosure houses a new perentie exhibit, two new aquariums and a redesigned en- trance to the aviary. ‘‘These upgrades took several months to complete and now in- clude a new perentie exhibit, two new aquariums and a redesigned entrance to the aviary,’’ Mrs Price said. ‘‘The aquarium area of the River- ine Display was dated and poorly set out. The viewing space has been vastly improved and the new aquariums provide better scope to increase the variety of fish species from the Central Australian re- gion.’’ The perentie enclosure is fitted with heat pads and lighting to provide warmth during the winter months which will encourage the goannas to remain active. The open walk through design of the aviary and the waterhole board- walk gives the visitor an up close and personal experience with the animals.
