Artist Biographies
JJ PIPITONE WITH THE EMPIRE STATESMEN D&B CORPS
With more than 10 years of drum corps experience, JJ Pipitone is one of the most in demand music/percussion judges in the United States. Pipitone has marched in drum corps all across North America, including several drum corps in Upstate New York; the Dutch Boy corps from Kitchener, Ontario; the Phantom Regiment corps from Rockford, Illinois; and the Concord Blue Devils corps
from Concord, California. He judges numerous marching band competitions in the fall, indoor drumline competitions in the winter/
spring, and Drum Corp International in the summer.
Entering his fifth year as the assistant band director at Grapevine High School in Dallas, Texas, Pipitone is responsible for music theory and history history classes, the Jazz Band, the School musical, and all percussion activities from Grades 6 – 12. Prior to this assignment, he was the director of percussion at Lewisville High School in Dallas for nine years.
Pipitone received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Morehead State University and his Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas.
ANDREW BEALL
A multi-faceted performer, composer, educator, and entrepreneur, Andrew Beall sustains balance between the Symphonic, Broadway, Rock, and Marching arenas. As a freelance percussionist, he has performed on Broadway in The Lion King and Les Miserables, In The Heights, Carnegie Hall with the Manhattan Pops Orchestra, and the Latin Grammy’s with artists such as Santana, Gloria Estefan,
Andy Garcia, Patty LaBelle, Kenny G, John Legend, Jon Secada, and the Miami Sound Machine. His debut studio album, Deliverance, was
released on BMP Records and received critical acclaim from PAS News.
Beall has appeared as a soloist around the world, including 15 recitals and 8 concerto performances. In 2001, he won the D.C.I. Solo Marimba Competition, D.C.I. Percussion Ensemble Competition (with the Phantom Regiment drum & bugle corps), and the P.A.S.I.C. College Marimba Competition. He has placed 1st in concerto competitions at The Ohio State University and New York University, and 2nd at the MTNA National Young Artist Performer’s Competition. He is also president of the Percussive Arts Society New York Chapter.
Beall received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the Manhattan School of Music, his Master’s Degree from New York University, and was a Charles Owen Memorial Fellowship winner at the Aspen Music Festival.

JIM ARMSTRONG
Jim Armstrong is a specialist in Haitian, Cuban, and West African based folkloric drumming with extensive fieldwork experience in West Africa, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and the United States. He continues to study and perform traditional Afro-Haitian and Afro-Cuban music for dance classes and religious ceremonies through the greater New York City and Philadelphia areas, in addition to presenting
several performance lectures at colleges and universities each year. Armstrong is currently Master Tambor for Sosyete Du Marche, an
American Vodou House in Philadelphia.
In addition to his world music background, Armstrong is an accomplished drumset artist, jazz vibraphonist, and symphonic percussionist. He has recorded and toured with the Robert Hohner Percussion Ensemble and can be heard on the DMP releases of Different Strokes, World Music Tour (DMP), and the Percussion Music of David Maslanka (Albany). He is currently an adjunct instructor of percussion at Elizabethtown College in Central Pennsylvania. Additionally, he was director of percussion ensemble at Cornell University from 2000 – 2007 and was visiting assistant professor of percussion at the University of Toledo.
Armstrong holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Central Michigan University and a Master’s Degree in Music Performance, with an emphasis in jazz studies and ethnomusicology, from Bowling Green State University. He is co-vice president for the Pennsylvania State Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society.
GREGORY BEYER
Hailed a “fine percussionist” in The New York Times and second prize winner of the 2002 Geneva International Music Competition, Gregory Beyer has given solo performances and masterclasses throughout the world. A contemporary music specialist with significant experience in contemporary, orchestral, jazz and world music, Beyer melds the multiple disciplines of 21st Century
percussion into a singular artistic voice.
Of primary importance to him is his project, ARCOMUSICAL – an endeavor that involves ethno-musicological research about, and the
composition and commission of new works for, the berimbau – am Afro-Brazilian musical bow instrument. His berimbau sextet, “Bau House,” has premiered five new works in as many years and has performed at PASIC 2009. His own compositions, Bahian Counterpoint (2002) and Vou-me embora (2006) have garnered multiple performances, prizes and positive reviews.
An Associate Professor of Percussion at Northern Illinois University, Greg Beyer directs the Percussion Ensemble (performed at PASIC in 2009), New Music Ensemble, and Latin Jazz Ensemble. He endorses Bosphorus cymbals, Innovative Percussion sticks and mallets, Pearl/Adams percussion instruments, and Evans Drumheads. Beyer is currently serving as President of the Illinois Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society.
