Hello and welcome to Memorial Park for today’s Central League clash with Wellington United and the early Premier League game for our Reserves against Marist.

Wellington United have a long and proud history in our game and it is great to see them back in the Central League. They have had a couple of good results already this season and will provide another real test for our lads.

We’ve been a little inconsistent again this year but have shown some scoring firepower with two 6 goal hauls in recent weeks. Once again it proves we do have the talent and when we get it right we can beat the very best. Let’s hope today is another good day in front of goal and we put our chances away.

The Premier League is proving to be a real challenge for our very young reserve team but despite the results we need to keep supporting these lads and help them get a positive result or two. They come up against another very experienced side today in Marist but need to keep believing in themselves and working hard for each other. A couple of victories could be all they need to gain some confidence and momentum and start a move up the table.

Good luck to both our teams today and don’t forget to play hard but playfair. I must also mention the 3rd team and how well they’ve been doing this year after a couple of lean seasons. Well done to the lads and good work Broadie. Keep it going!

Don’t forget our Horsie night coming up next weekend run by the 1st team boys. It’s our first major function for the year so let’s have a good turnout and a fun evening. It’s also a good chance to dress up in your Sunday best and show your style. You don’t know, we might even have an impromptu ‘Fashion in the Field’ event

the Visitors: Wellington unitedThe Wellington United club’s origins can be traced back to 1893, when some members of the Star Rugby Club set up the Diamond Association Football Club, in order to affiliate with the Wellington Football Association and enter a team in the Association’s Junior Division – that was the one and only lower grade of men’s football beneath Division One. By virtue of several amalgamations and name changes, Diamond morphed into Wellington United, which can claim to be the oldest club in Wellington football. Petone, on the other hand, is the oldest club in Wellington that is still in the form in which it was founded – with no amalgamations. Diamond entered the Division One championship in 1895 and was joined by Petone in that division in 1898.

Diamond remained a single entity for 75 years until 1968, but then a series of complex changes began. In 1968, it merged with Wellington United to become Wellington Diamond United. Wellington United, founded as Zealandia in 1954 by Dutch immigrants, had changed its name in 1964. In 1968, WDU (as the club was more commonly known) played in the inaugural Central Regional League Division One, finishing fourth. The club made it to the National League for the 1973 season but at the end of the following season they found themselves back in Division One. WDU went on to win the National League in 1976, 1981 and 1985.

In 1986, WDU merged with Wellington City to form Wellington City Diamond United, which soon shortened its name to Wellington United. Wellington City itself was the product of a limited merger of the Hungaria Club (formed in 1962 by Hungarian immigrants) and Miramar Rangers. Hungaria had been playing very skillful football in the Central League before being invited to join the first New Zealand National Soccer League in 1970. The team finished seventh out of eight, winning just three games. Hungaria decided to forfeit its place and combine with Miramar Rangers to form Wellington City, which was in the National League for the 1971 and 1972 seasons. Miramar Rangers withdrew from Wellington City after the 1971 season.

Hungaria went solo again in 1973, while Wellington City remained as an independent entity, continuing to play in the National League until 1975. Hungaria had mixed success in the years ahead until at the end of the 1977 season they were relegated to Central League Division Two. After two unsuccessful seasons in Division Two they merged with Wellington City permanently in 1979.

Season 2012 has started exceptionally well for the Petone Football Club’s junior ranks. The year was always going to be one of massive change with the new nationwide Whole of Football plan being implemented and ensuring that we continue to grow and develop all the children within the club.

This year has seen us grow the size of the junior section of the club to about 450 kids. With the addition of the new First Kicks programme, we have seen growth in almost every age grade bar one. The number of juniors can put a strain on gear, resources and securing quality coaching. However, as we are one of the few clubs to have grown its junior ranks, that is a positive return for the Junior Committee, Grade Managers and the Management Committee who put in so much hard work and voluntary time.

Whole of FootballThis year has seen the introduction of a new national standard and framework for the coaching and playing of football, impacting every grade of junior football over the next 2-3 years. This year has seen a massive shift in focus particularly for grades 7th – 10th but with changes also occurring in 11th and 12th grades. The focus of the changes is all based on the kids enjoying themselves, developing new skills and creating a “player centred approach”.

Director of Junior FootballOne of the biggest impacts on the club this year is the recruitment of Stu Pyne as Director of Junior Football. Stu has been marvellous for our kids’ development through running pre-season clinics, musters, and the School Holiday programme, and being involved with trials. We welcome Stu and look forward to his further involvement.

SponsorshipThe junior section of the club has also been fortunate in securing sponsorship to help with the management of junior football. The Office Relocation Company have come on board to become our Whole of Football sponsor, and Packaging Products are sponsoring our Junior Premier League teams as well as helping out with other costs. We are grateful to both companies for their contributions.

Now that the season has started we are looking forward to some great results for the junior section of the Club this year and continuing to offer a comprehensive and enjoyable programme for the kids.

We are a well-established football club with a long history in the Wellington area. Our home ground is Kilbirnie Park and from 1896 until now, Marist has been competitive in local and regional football. We are fiercely proud of our amateur standing and have a determination throughout the club to maintain this status. We are pleased to note that we continue to attract talented players without having to offer any incentives for them to play. We have players from many countries and backgrounds and this creates a diverse and vibrant culture within the club itself. Our coaching and management are integral in the success of the club and work tirelessly to provide a stable administrative and practical base second to none. Our current membership boasts 3 women’s teams (Central League; Premier and Division 1) and 11 men’s teams represented throughout the divisions. Over the years we have achieved high honours of being Chatham Cup winners twice; winners of multiple Central League women’s titles; semi-finalists in the 2010 NZ Women’s Knockout Cup; and we even took out our division in the Hilton-Petone tournament a few times!

Marist welcomes the involvement of families and friends of players as we believe this contributes to our ongoing success as a local amateur football club. We, like all great amateur clubs, rely on families, friends and associates to help on all levels of our operation. From fund-raising to management we are fortunate to have skilled people volunteering their time which enables us to retain a secure footing in the world of club football in Wellington.

Editor’s footnoteThe very considerable research that we undertook into the history of the early years of football in Wellington revealed that Petone’s foundation year was not as we had always thought – 1889, but was in fact 1898.

Similarly, that research showed no mention of Marist Bros. until 1900, when that club first played in a Wellington Football Association championship - the boys’ fourth-class division (under 14 years old). They were in that division again in 1901. In 1902, Marist Bros Old Boys entered a senior team in the 1st Division, where Petone had been playing since 1898. The two clubs played their first game against each other on 31 May 1902 at the Petone Recreation Ground, and the score was a 2 – 2 draw. Marist Bros. Old Boys did not enter a senior team in competition for the next two years at least, but Marist Bros did have teams in what was called the Boys’ District League in those years.

Steve joined the club as a nine-year-old in 1960, playing his first game on the then newly commissioned Memorial Park No. 1 ground. He soon found his niche as a left wing and moved through the age grades until commencing senior football in 1968.

In 1971 Steve started in administration as secretary of the inaugural supporters’ club committee and he sometimes attended management committee meetings as the supporters’ representative. He must have enjoyed the experience because for 1972, while still supporters’ club secretary, he was elected to the management committee, taking responsibility for football administration. The following year, he remained on the management committee and was chairman of the supporters’ club for a year.

Steve suffered a broken leg in a game in 1972 but returned to play again the next year, before becoming player/manager of the 3rd team in 1974, a year in which he took a break from committee work. In 1975 he was again elected to the management committee, filling in as acting chairman at the end of that season. He was also Hilton-Petone Tournament organiser at the beginning of 1976.

The 1975 season saw Steve take what was to be a long break from playing and start a nine-year stint as a very proactive manager of the 1st team. He changed the role from one of laundry and match-day duties to include also publicist, marketer and records-keeper. Steve meticulously kept appearance and goal-scoring records of the Central League team, a practice that enabled him to bring about the 1st team centurion awards and that contributed to the material on our new Honours Board.

Steve resumed playing in 1984 and enjoyed four years in the President’s grade, being a strategic weapon for the Pet Shop Boys’ team’s attack.

Perhaps Steve’s most visible role would have been many years spent as results officer, which included weekly gathering of results and the then new practice of announcing them and other information in the clubrooms. The equal and witty treatment given to all teams fostered good club spirit, as it does to this day.

A break in 1978 aside, Steve was elected to the management committee each year from 1975 to1997. During that time, he put a lot of energy for varying periods into such roles as publicity officer, gear steward, and editor of the club’s monthly magazine. He also served as deputy chairman for many years, a measure of his colleagues’ respect for his significant and sustained input.

Late in 1986 he was appointed one of Petone’s two directors, and deputy chairman, on the board of Hutt Valley United, a joint Petone, Stop Out and Lower Hutt set-up to enable representation in the then National League. Steve remained in this rather arduous role until 1991, shortly after which Petone withdrew from the arrangement.

At the Annual General Meeting in 1986, Steve’s huge commitment, initiative and taking of responsibility through16 years of administrative service was acknowledged with the awarding of life membership. It is easy to list the offices held and the length of service given that our life members have indebted us with, but it is much harder to convey the sheer intensity, extensive commitment and breadth of responsibility taken that were, and have been, characteristic of Steve’s contribution.

In the sponsorship area, Steve has been almost solely responsible for securing major sponsorships with most of our Central League and club sponsors over many years. He also arranged multiple minor sponsorships which were incorporated into our annual calendars and monthly magazines.

Another initiative unique to Steve was his success in organising special events. In particular, the visit to Petone of West Ham United star, Trevor Brooking, and the associated dinner; the 1988 John Adshead dinner; and in 1989 a series of luncheons in our clubrooms with eminent guest speakers, including Sir Robert Muldoon.

During 1988 - 90 Steve was at the helm in the hosting of three internationals at the Hutt Rec. where New Zealand played Young Brazil, Australia, and China. In this period and through to 1992, he also had liaison roles with England, and other international teams including the All Whites, when they played in Wellington. Along with being Newstalk ZB’s football reporter during 1985 – 96, these roles gave Steve a high profile in local football.

Steve led the project for fencing the no.1 pitch, and improvements to the changing sheds and the car park, leading up to the 1995 season. From that role he went on to be elected Chairman of the Management Committee in 1995-96, during which time he managed the termination of the Club Manager role.

He then withdrew from active club roles and in 2001 moved to Auckland where he still managed to set up a sponsorship deal with Bosch for the Hilton-Petone Tournament. He moved south in 2004 to live on the Kapiti Coast, and became seriously involved with the club again in 2010 when he filled a gap to take the leadership of the Honours Board Project Group, which saw the Board’s completion late in 2011. He also took the lead with the under 19 fundraising raffle, and last year secured a major sponsorship for the 1st team with Grant Plumbing.

This year Steve has established new sponsorship packages and gained support from several local businesses that will provide backing for all sections of the club. His work has involved re-instating the fund-raising club calendar and overseeing our match programmes to assist in promoting our sponsors’ interests.

Steve’s willingness to take responsibility for achieving good outcomes from major projects which really make a difference to the club has been of great benefit, and it would be greater if others might derive inspiration from his example.
