On a hillside setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Laetitia Vine-yard & Winery is committed to producing ultra premium, limited edition Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling wines

that showcase the distinctive qualities of their estate vineyards locatedin San Luis Obispo Countys Arroyo Grande Valley.

Arroyo Grande is a cool viticultural area, notably one of Californiascoolest, just 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean, ideal for cultivating PinotNoir and Chardonnay. The narrow east-west valley channels damp, maritime breezes and fog to this Burgundian Eden.

It is French tradition that originated the plantings at LaetitiaWinery, when in 1982, the terrain was researched as a suitable site forproducing Mthode Champenoise sparkling wines for an American-ized version of Champagne Deutz. The soils were compared to thosein Epernay in France, and Maison Deutz soon blossomed in thisCentral Coast AVA, planting about 185 acres to Pinot Noir, PinotBlanc and Chardonnay. When the winerys vineyard owner purchasedthe property in 1997, still wine production overtook sparkling wine, and owner Jean-Claude Tardivat, who renamed the winery after hisdaughter Laetitia, realized the superior quality of the Pinot Noir grownof this terroir.

A year later, Selim Zilkha, and his daughter, Nadia Wellisz, boughtLaetitia Vineyard & Winery and assumed leadership of the brand.

Selim and Nadia bring a successful and varied business background

this estate, as well as a passion for producing truly outstanding wine Winemakers Eric Hickey (still wines) and Dave Hickey (sparklwines) are a vibrant and energetic father and son winemaking teamwhose award-winning efforts have brought much esteem and excitement to the estate.

Laetitia owners Selim Zilkha and Nadia Wellisz also own aoperate Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard, located in Santa BarbCountys Sierra Madre Mountain Range.

This winery makes a little of everything and all of it surprisingwell. The sparkling wines are crisp and appealingly straightforwarwhile the Pinot Noirs are typically rich and structured. The winery built into a hillside overlooking Highway 101 and is a favorite wiwine tourists for its scenic picnic area and friendly tasting-room staThe tasting room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    by Dave Wilcox

Perched on a hilltop at the end of a

serpentine road winding throughwalnut groves and stately oaks, Casa

de Caballos seems to be at the top of theworld. But the modest, ranch-style home andthe unassuming winery and horse farm youfind there are, like their owners, very down-to-earth.

Dr. Tom Morgan and his wife, Sheila, haveuniquely combined their passion for finewines and fine horses in a setting with breath-taking views of the Paso Robles Wine

Country.Standing in the doorway of Morgans office

upstairs from the winerys tasting room, looking southwest a panoramic scene of vine-yards and rolling hillsides unfolds before you.A late afternoon breeze sweeps through, awhisper of the Pacific Oceans presence a littlemore than 10 miles away.

Since planting the first vines in 1983,Dr. Morgan has seen his winemaking hobbyblossom into a venture producing approxi-

mately 1,200 cases each year, with six acres of vineyards planted to varietals such as PinotNoir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rieslingand Muscat Canelli.

I call it a hobby run amok, jokesMorgan.

Even though his hobby has become asuccessful business, the thrill remains.

Its still a passion, said Morgan. Every-body needs an art form. This is what I do. Itsfun to create something.

Serendipity had something to do with thMorgans finding their way to the Templetohilltop farm. While in residency in OranCounty in the mid-1970s, Morgan traveled Paso Robles to explore the possibility establishing a medical practice. During hvisit, he met with a fellow internist wworked in Paso Robles Dr. StanlHoffman, one of the areas pioneeriproducers of Pinot Noir at HMR Winery.

Morgan, who already was experimentiwith making berry and fruit wines while Orange County, made the move north anplanted his small vineyard with White Rie

ling, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. At the time, there were five wineries in

of San Luis Obispo County.By 1995, Casa de Caballos was bond

and it released its first commercial offerinthe 95 Fantasy White Riesling. Morgan sthe varietal thrives on the southwest-facihilltop, thanks to its 1,280 foot elevatiocooling Pacific breezes and the chalky, clsoil. Those features also enable Casa Caballos to produce excellent Pinot Noir.

At the same time Dr. Morgan cultivated his winemaking skills,Sheila Morgan lived out her dream of breeding award-winningArabian horses. The farm now includes a half-dozen mares andSheila Morgan has been involved with the births of all but a handfulof the 67 foals born there.

Wines from Casa de Caballos (House of Horses) feature thenames and pictures of the brood mares, such as Periwinkle, Forget-menot and Lilac Tyme. Morgans 2006 Lilac Tyme is an unusual blendof 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 percent Merlot and 20 percentMuscat Canelli, a mixture inspired by his desire to get the color of the wine as close to the color of the horse as possible.

The Morgans say their dual passions are complementary. Its hardto imagine two pursuits with more history and romance than raisinghorses and making wine.

Like many, Morgan was initially drawn to his craft by wines noblehistory, having traveled to Germany while still in college.

Wine has always had a history and a story behind it. I becameinterested in the history and the mystique.

At the same time, the Morgans try to de-mystify or, as he said,de-snobbify wine.

The key is whether you like it, or not, summed up SheilaMorgan.

The Morgans are involved with production at Casa de Caballosevery step of the way.

Hand-crafted is a phrase whose meaning can sometimes bestretched to the breaking point, but Morgan isnt exaggerating whenhe talks about his personal involvement with the wine.

The thing I enjoy most is that we do it all ourselves. Its an artform.

Starting with planting the vines, Morgan takes part in every phaseof production from vineyard to the glass, including punching downthe must by hand, barreling and bottling. Sheila Morgan designs thelabels featuring her Arabian horses that are then made using theMorgans labeling machines.

And if you stop by for some tasting, it will be the Morgans happilypouring at the tasting bar which happens to be fashioned fromwalnut trees removed to expand the vineyards.

Tasting room visitors who want to relax with a bottle of wine orpicnic are invited to visit the Morgans backyard patio, which offersviews of the winerys Secret Valley Vineyard. The bowl-shaped valleyis surrounded by oak groves and cant be seen from the low-lying

roads leading up to Casa de Caballos. The Morgans rent the patio which includes full, outdoor

cooking facilities and can comfortably seat 60 for small weddingsand other gatherings. The winerys barrel room, housed in an 80-year-old barn adjacent to the tasting room, is also available to rent.

The tasting room is open Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to5 p.m. and Monday through Thursday by appointment only. Theyare located at 2225 Raymond Avenue in Templeton. To get there, exitHighway 101 at Vineyard Drive and head west to Bethel Road. Turnleft and follow the signs. For more information, call (805) 434-1687or visit the website at www.casadecaballos.com.

2007 Winery Music Awards CompetitionThe 2007 Winery Music Awards competition, the Paso Robles-

based showcase of original music artists from across the US andCanada who are unsigned with major record labels, kicked off itsfive-concert series of competitions in June with five female artistscompeting for a spot at the final competition in October and achance to win prizes, cash and a breakthrough recording contract.

The June event was held at Maloy ONeill Vineyards in PasoRobles and featured a variety of musical genres, including pop, rock, country and folk, performed by artists from Los Angeles, SanDiego, Sacramento and Portland, OR.

We are very excited about the caliber of talent that we haveplaying at this summers competition, says Kathy Kelly, producerof the Winery Music Awards. It just happened that all of the firstfive artists were female because of how the schedule worked out,

but the July through September Elimination Rounds will be fairlybalanced between male and female artists.

A panel of notable judges influential in the music, entertain-ment and wine industries votes its choices for best artists of thecompetition. Artists are judged in the categories of originality, musicianship and, most importantly, marketability to the wine-consuming market. The competition is open to the music genresof: jazz, rock, blues, new age, acoustic, country, folk, soft rock, reggae and adult contemporary.

June artists were Kerri Dopart, San Diego, CA, Rocky Gaines,Los Angeles, CA; Debra Arlyn, Portland, OR; Shannon Curtis,Sacramento, CA and Kimberly Jean, Los Angeles, CA.

The results of each Elimination Round concert are posted on theWinery Music Awards website, www.winerymusicawards.com.

S Some people are saying Paso Robles is fast becoming the next Napa Valley. Since its about three hourssouth of the Bay Area, Paso Robles is a great destination for a weekend getaway. You wont find thecrowds or the traffic but you will find fine wine, plenty of tasting rooms and lots to do. Weve made several trips to Paso Robles on In Wine Country shoots and are amazed each time by

the transformation of cattle grazing land to vineyards. I used to be a news anchor near Paso Robles inthe 1980s, when Paso was considered more of a cow town than a wine town. Back then the Mid-StateFair was Pasos biggest draw. Fortunately for us, Paso Robles has managed to hang on to its small-towncharm while emerging as a force to be reckoned with on the wine scene.

Paso is known for sizzling hot summers and cool nights. The closer you get to the coast, the milderthe temperatures, but inland, the heat and cold can be quite dramatic. If you tend to wilt in the heat, spring is a great time to visit because temperatures are quite comfortable and the scenery is stunning.By July, almost all but the hills have turned a golden brown, but right now there are plenty of rollinggreen hills to enjoy.

Justin Winery is among the brightest stars in PasoRobles. Their Isosceles meritage is one of the mostacclaimed Bordeaux blends in California. But owners

Justin and Deborah Baldwin offer the full WineCountry experience with a restaurant, Deborahs Room, and a small inn tucked away among the vines, appro-priately called the Just Inn. With only three rooms, youll feel as if youre staying in your own private Wine

Country. Another must-stop along the Paso Robles wine trail is Eberle Winery. Gary Eberle is a pioneer onthis wine scene. He co-founded the Paso Robles appellation in 1980 and is considered the Johnny

Appleseed of Syrah because he introduced the first 100% varietal planting of Syrah grapes in CaliforniEberle was also the first winery on the Central Coast to put in underground caves, and with 17 thou-

sand square feet of underground tunnels, they remain among the biggest.Despite his contribution to Paso Wine Country, Gary is about as laid-back a

they come. When I visited Eberle, he challenged me to a game of bocce, wineglass in hand, claiming they play strip-bocce at Eberle. He was kidding, butGarys fun-loving personality definitely sets the tone. In fact, its one of the fewbig wineries left that still pours wine without a tasting fee. Make sure to rub thnose of the bronze boar when you visit; it is good luck.

From wild boars to wild coyotes, another side of Paso Robles can be found Wild Coyote Winery.

Wild Coyote is one of the newer wineries to make its appearance on the PasRobles wine scene and its unlike any other winery weve been to before. For one thing, its styled aftethe adobe pueblos of New Mexico and for another, theres a genuine teepee on site. Its all part of thevision of its owner and winemaker, Gianni Manucci.

Gianni is passionate about Native American culture and its connection with the earth. That passionis reflected in his winemaking style, but also in the winery itself. Youll find Native American artifactalongside Giannis stone sculptures in the tasting room, and if Gianni isnt pouring some of hisZinfandel, Syrah or Merlot, he may well be out in the teepee, playing his flute.

Gianni also recently opened a five-room, New Mexico-style retreat on site thats part bed and break

fast and part spiritual hideaway. These are just a few of the wineries weve featured on In Wine

In fact,Paso Robles offers a wealth of fun places to explore includingWindrose Farm, famous for organic heirloom tomatoes, WillowCreek Olive Ranch, makers of the acclaimed Pasolivo olive oil andgourmet restaurants such as Bistro Laurent and Villa Creek.

Its not Napa, yet, and thats part of the charm. Paso Robles is defi-nitely up and coming but it hasnt abandoned its small town roots.Theres still a Mayberry-ish vibe to the town and you cant help buthope it stays that way. When you visit, leave your Gucci shoes athome and pack the Timberland boots instead; and if you go duringthe summer, dont miss the 4H livestock competition at the MidState Fair.
