Senior Center News, Activities & Entertainment

Adventures in Dining - On the 3rd Thursday’s of the month the seniors go to different restaurants

around the area. Durango, Farmington, Pagosa Springs, & Ignacio. Please call to make reservations.

Bayfield Food Bank Donation - Friday, 10 - On Birthday Celebration Day, the Senior Center will be

collecting non-perishable, unexpired, unopened packages of food for the Bayfield Food Bank. Monetary

donations are also welcome and can be dropped off at Bayfield Town Hall or given to Brenda at the Senior

Center.

Bingo - on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday’s of each month starting at approximately 1:00 pm we will be playing

bingo. Each card costs a quarter and you can play all afternoon, this also helps with purchasing the prizes you

can win.

Birthday Celebration - Friday, May 10 -at noon - Please join us on the 2nd Friday of every month for our

birthday celebration.

Blue Star Moms - Donations for our troops are being collected for the Blue Star Moms of Durango. There

is a drop box at the Senior Center for donated items. Support our troops and this great organization!

Box Tops & Labels for Education - The Senior Center is collecting Box Tops & Labels for Education to

benefit our local schools. Please drop them in the plastic container on the front counter.

Brenda Marshall’s Card Making Class - Tuesday May 28 - Brenda from the Pine River Public Library

hosts a “Stamping Up”! card making class 4th Tuesday of each month from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Cost is

FREE; we will make 2 greeting cards each. Call 884-5415 with questions.

Bridge Club - Tuesdays at the Senior Center from 9:00 a.m.. - 11:30 a.m. Please call Joe Mozgai at

884-0928, or call 884-5415 for more information. New members are always welcome!

Caregivers Group - Meet the second Friday—May 10 of each month at 10:00 pm till 11:00 am at the

Senior Center. This group will provide support for those who are caregivers needing help or want to know

more about caregiving. For more information please call Elaine Stampo 259-0122.

Cinco de Mayo - Friday, May 3 - Come join in the fun for celebrating cinco de mayo and our assessor's.

Coloring Group— 3rd Tuesday each month— 9:00 am till 3:00 pm. Come join the group for adults

who like to color for Free Please bring your coloring book, pencils, markers or crayons and come visit while

you color.

Community Quilt Group - Tuesday, May 14 - All quilters & people with homemade projects are invited to

come join them on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This group is open to all who are interested in sharing

Health Checks—Friday, July12, 2019 — Bayfield Pharmacy will be here 2nd Friday, in July to take

blood pressures and check blood sugar for free. For more information please call Ann or Nic at Bayfield

Pharmacy at 970-884-9133.

Mexican Train Dominoes - Join us on Tuesday Game Days, Wednesdays and Fridays after lunch for

a fun game of dominoes. Anyone can join and it’s free. Can’t beat free entertainment!

Pine River Senior Board Meetings - Held on the 2nd Wednesday of every other month. The 2019

dates are January 9, March 13, May 8, July 10, September 11 and November 13. Everyone is welcome to join

us at 12:30 p.m. in the conference room.

Pot Luck Tuesday’s - Tuesday, May 7 - Join us on the 1st Tuesday of each month to have pot luck.

Please bring a dish to share.

Veterans’ Services - Friday, May 31 - Richard Schleeter with the La Plata County Veterans Service’s

Office will be at the Senior Center at 10:00 a.m. to visit with any veterans that may have questions about

what benefits and services are available to them, please call 970-759-0117 for more information.

Fitness & Exercise Programs

Stretch & Flex is a balance and coordination based exercise class that takes place every

Wednesday & Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. for FREE - Please come to Senior Center to Sign

up or call (970)884-5415.

Yoga - Tuesday at the Pine River Library Community Room 9:00 am, Thursday 8:00 am at the Library;

Colleen Theobald will guide participants through Hatha Yoga Class. The focus will be on core strength, body toning,

proper alignment and breathing techniques. This class is also held on Tuesday 6:00 p.m. at the Senior Center.

Recipe Corner

Blueberry-Banana Pie

2 Pie Shells, Baked 1 C. Sugar

3 Bananas 1 (8-oz)) Ctn Cool Whip (Whipped Topping)

1 (8-oz) pkg. Cream Cheese, Softened 1 Can Blueberry Pie Filling

Slice bananas in shell. Cream together cream cheese and sugar. Fold in whipped topping and spread mixture on

top of bananas. Top with pie filling and chill. Must keep refrigerated, if there is any leftovers.

Cabbage Salad

1 pkg. Chicken Flavored Ramen Soup Noodles 1/2 C Vegetable Oil

6 C Shredded Cabbage 3 T Vinegar

4 Chopped green onions 2 T Sugar

1/2 C Toasted sunflower kernels 1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 C Sliced almonds 1/2 tsp. pepper

Remove the season packet from the noodles and set aside. Crush noodles. Combine noodles, cabbage, green

onions, sunflower kernels & almonds in a large bowl. Combine seasoning packet with oil, vinegar, sugar, salt, &

pepper. Mix with a wire whisk. Pour dressing over the cabbage mixture & toss gently. Cover & chill.

Special Nutrient Needs of Older

Adults Eating right and staying fit are important no matter what your age. As we get older our bodies have different needs, so certain nutrients become especially important for good health.

Calcium and Vitamin D

Older adults need more calcium and vitamin D to help maintain bone health. Have three servings of calcium-rich foods and beverages each day. This includes fortified cereals and fruit juices, dark green leafy vegetables, canned fish with soft bones, milk and fortified plant beverages. If you take a calcium supplement or multivitamin, choose one that contains vitamin D.

Vitamin B12

Many people older than 50 do not get enough vitamin B12. Fortified cereal, lean meat and some fish and sea-food are sources of vitamin B12. Ask your doctor or a registered dietitian nutritionist if you need a vitamin B12 supplement.

Fiber

Eat more fiber-rich foods to stay regular. Fiber also can help lower your risk for heart disease and prevent Type 2 diabetes. Eat whole-grain breads and cereals, and more beans and peas — along with fruits and vegetables which also provide fiber.

Potassium

Increasing potassium along with reducing sodium (salt) may lower your risk of high blood pressure. Fruits, vegetables and beans are good sources of potassium. Also, select and prepare foods with little or no added salt. Add flavor to food with herbs and spices.

Know Your Fats

Foods that are low in saturated fats and trans fat help reduce your risk of heart disease. Most of the fats you eat should be polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which are primary found in nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil and fish.

Fraud Alert: Nationwide Brace Scam Scammers are offering Medicare beneficiaries orthotic braces that are supposedly free to them and covered by Medicare. If a beneficiary has received unwanted or unneeded braces and that equipment is billed to Medicare, then Medicare may deny a brace

that the beneficiary needs in the future. MEDICARE SCAM ALERT - Scammers may call about your new Medicare card to trick you into sharing your personal information — like your current Medicare Number. Remember, Medicare will never call you uninvited or ask for your personal or private information to get your new Medicare Number and card. There are very limited situations in which Medicare can call you.

Here are 2 tips to avoid Medicare scams:

1. Guard your Medicare Number and card. Only give your Medicare Number to doctors, pharmacists, other health care providers, your insurers, or people you trust to work with Medicare on your behalf.

Hang up on fraudsters. If someone asks for your information, for money, or threatens to cancel your health benefits if you don’t share your personal information, hang up and call us at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227)

The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) empowers and assists Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse. SMPs are here to answer your questions. Advice is free, confidential and objec-tive. Medicare is complicated. What may seem like an error to the beneficiary may simply be the result of a misunderstanding about benefits. It may also be abuse, which involves billing Medicare for services that are not covered or are not correctly coded. The Colorado Senior Medicare Patrol is here to help, so call or email with your questions.

Frequently Asked Questions: I was billed for a service I didn't receive. What do I do?

Contact the Colorado Senior Medicare Patrol I believe there is an error on my Medicare Bill.

Contact the health care provider or the company that paid the bill. If they don't resolve the issue, contact the Colorado Senior Medicare Patrol What if I suspect Medicare fraud?

Do they say the offer is only good today? A real company will give you time to think and verify.

Become an informed

Medicare consumer

Each day, you make important choices about your finances, health, privacy, and more.

During National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW), March 3–9, 2019, non-profit organizations and

government agencies can help you take advantage of your rights and make better-informed choices.

Here are some things you can do to become an informed Medicare consumer:

Know your rights. As a person with Medicare, you have certain rights and protections designed to help protect you and make sure you get the health care services the law says you can get.

Protect your identity. Identity theft happens when someone uses your personal information without your consent to commit fraud or other crimes. Keep information like your Social Security Number, bank account numbers and Medicare Number safe. Your Medicare card has a Medicare Number that’s unique to you, instead of your Social Security Number. This helps to protect your identity. Get more information on how to protect yourself from identity theft.

Help fight Medicare fraud. Medicare fraud takes money from the Medicare program each year, which means higher health care costs for you. Learn how to report fraud.

Get involved with other seniors with the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP). The SMP educates and empowers people with Medicare to take an active role in detecting and preventing health care fraud and abuse.

Make informed Medicare choices. Each year during the fall Open Enrollment Period (October 15–December 7), review your plan to make sure it will meet your needs for the next year. If you’re not satisfied with your current plan, you can switch during the Open Enrollment Period.

agencies and organizations are able to help you, and to find out if there are any activities happening in

Sr. Board Meeting

March 20, 2019

Meeting called to order at 12:37 p.m.

Board members present: Dan Dvojack, Margaret Crawley, Maxine Dvojack, Lee Roy Powers, Joanne McCoy, Sharon Fowler, Anne Rudolph, Vicky Mozgai, Charlene Johnson, Carole McWilliams, Maureen Cleveland Town representatives: Brenda Jones, Becky Eisenbraun, Kristen Dallison County representative: No County representative present.

Minutes corrections: Vicky Mozgai will be doing the bir thday board, not Anne Rudolph as reported in the January minutes. Minutes approved as corrected.

Financial Report: Repor t given by Brenda in Tony's absence. Donation of $2,510 ($10 cash, $2,500 from SWAG), and another donation of $50 from Chris Johnson to bring us to a total of $10,700.45, add CDs for a cash total of $38,474.62. Since January CD interest is $2,000. CD #23360 will be made into a checking account on March 11, and requests board approval for a new CD of $13,000 with TBK bank with a return of 2.xx% for a term greater than 2 years. No need to have so much cash in checking account. Motion to approve moving money into the new CD, motion approved, seconded.

Old business: Pool table update: re-covered, leveled, pockets and slates straightened for $550. Fall bazaar: Door prizes, drawings? Motion to do door prizes, motion carried.

New business: We purchased a 40 in. flat screen TV. Sell raffle tickets? Do we need a raffle license? COA ok for that? We will check with COA. Sell voices? Picture of TV for drawing instead of raffle ticket? Details to be decided at future meetings. Charlene makes a motion to do picture instead of raffle ticket, motion carried. Annual BBQ June 4th (1st Tuesday), discussion. Hamburgers, hot dogs? Finalize at May meeting. Need County input regarding suggestions for picnics here, what days, etc.

Becky: Quotes on re-doing floors was higher than anticipated.

Anne: Question re decorating committee, decorating for holidays, no committee now, rely on volunteers.

Brenda: Ar ts and crafts every month going down in numbers. We need to get r id of some materials to make room for new stuff.

Kristen: Meeting last week about east intersection and connecting it to Oak, no decision on intersection as yet, getting public input. Mosquito spraying contract renewed. 4 plex on South street approved, 2 story w/garages, alley will be no parking.
