In July 2013 over 1,200 people from 50 American states and 77 countries converged on Chicago, Illinois with the sole purpose to have a conversation about climate change, as trainees in the Climate Reality Project.

The Climate Reality Project is a global network of dedicated individuals that are committed to taking action on climate change. The training in Chicago was the 23rd training session since its inception in 2006.

Former president of Wolston and Centenary Catchments, Janelle Rees was one of nine Australians to be selected to participate.

“I was privileged to be part of a group selected for our commitment to the environment to be trained by former US Vice-President Al Gore,” she said.

“The program encouraged us to take a stronger look at climate change – the science, the impacts and the solutions. We were trained in communication skills, heard the latest science and were equipped with Al Gore’s climate reality presentation to bring back to our home countries in order to start a climate conversation.

“As an environmental scientist, climate change is an issue that I have researched for some time. The opportunity to learn more from leading global experts was a once in a lifetime experience.”

Since her return, Janelle has conducted presentations to clubs and groups to educate people on climate change and it’s impact.

“Each climate reality presentation is approximately an hour long and can be given to any size group of people, of any age. The presentations look at the latest science and the most recent impacts of climate change, both around the world and in Australia.

“We also look at ways that you can be involved in this global network, and what you can do to help. Climate change is one of the biggest threats facing us today. I want to be part of the solution by bringing the climate conversation to you – to listen to your concerns and hear your questions.”

If you are part of a community organisation, a parent or a concerned citizen and want to know more information about booking a presentation, please contact Janelle Rees by sending an email to [email protected].

If you are a regular reader of this column, you would know by now that I love Christmas. I love the rush, the entertaining, the present wrapping, the buzz in the air. I love it all.

My husband, though, being not so keen on the rush and busyness of the season, was lamenting it’s excess and the fact that most of the time, the reason for the season is not even mentioned.

It’s true, isn’t it? Christmas in the western world is often a time of excess. We spend too much, eat too much, drink too much, and the whole point of Christmas gets lost along the way, if it’s even remembered at all. It can be hard to see how any of what we currently do at Christmas time has any relationship to what happened in that manger over 2000 years ago.

So, how do we get around that if we want to remember the real reason we celebrate it but not boycott the whole event?

I’m not sure what the answer is for each individual but here’s how I look at it.

When we rush around looking for that perfect gift for a loved one, we are honouring the gift humanity was given on the first Christmas. When we worry if there is enough food or that the meat is overcooked, we are demonstrating we care about the people we are feeding and want to give them the best there is. When we make up another bed on the lounge room floor, we are opening our home and showing love to others - something that the person who was born at Christmas talked a bit about. When we don’t sit down all day because we are on our feet ensuring everyone has enough drinks and food, we are serving others - another thing that the same person talked a bit about. When we go on a mad cleaning frenzy in preparation for our guests, we are really saying that their comfort and giving them pleasant surrounds is important to us.

We can find the real meaning of Christmas in everything we do if we look at it a different way.

For those who feel bothered by the over-commercialism, the tinsel, the secular emphasis on a fat man in a red suit, try shifting your focus and instead of grumbling and lamenting the lack of acknowledgement of the real reason for the season, embrace the festivities.

What better way to say thank you for the ultimate gift we were given than loving, serving, laughing and thoroughly enjoying ourselves?

So, from us to you, a merry Christmas. May it be safe, full of joy and abounding in fellowship, no matter how you spend it.

Dogs and cats feel the heat just as much as we do, and can show signs of heat stress and discomfort. In addition to avoiding excessive exercise in the heat of the day, here are a few tips to make summer time fun for your pets.

Ice cubes or a frozen ice cream container of water are a great way to cool down your pooch – you can add them to their water bowl or give them a challenge by freezing a piece of kibble inside each cube.

Buy a wading pool (not inflatable!). Fill it up with about 10cm of water and add some favourite toys or some ice cubes. The clamshell pools are perfect for your pets.

Get a sandpit for your dog - dogs love to lie in the cool sand. In really hot, dry, weather, it helps to wet the sand first.

Have plenty of shady trees for your pet to keep cool underneath.

Cats and dogs generally find the coolest spot in the house to lie - you can make life breezy for them by keeping a bowl of water near this area.

Icepacks in their beddings and surrounds will help keep them cool. Just make sure that the pack is wrapped up in order to avoid ice burn on your pet’s skin.

Give them a summer clip - long haired dogs and cats really do enjoy their long coats being clipped off. Not only does this help them feel cool, but it stops moulting and furballs.

Try a belly clip – if you think a full clip would be too much for your pet, why not try a belly clip instead? The belly hair is clipped very short, which looks inconspicuous and keeps them cool when they lie on the ground. And as always, remember to brush and groom regularly.

The hot, lazy days of summer can be fun for everyone. They are certainly easier for our pets to enjoy if we help them manage the heat.

Summer time fun!

2013 is coming to an end and I am sure that many of you, like myself, will take some time over the Christmas and New Year period to relax and reflect on the year that was.

It has been a very busy year, particularly in the political spectrum and I would again like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting me at the federal election. I do not take this support for granted and I will continue to work for the people of the Western Corridor.

It is important to remember to take extra precautions on our roads over the holidays. There are a few simple measures that can be taken to ensure everyone’s safety. It is undoubtable that there will be extra traffic on the roads, so make sure you plan your trip and allow for delays. Always stick to the speed limit, obey the road rules and ensure all of your passengers are wearing their seatbelt. Remember, it is better to get to your destination safe and late, than not at all.

My office will close at 5pm on December 20 and will reopen at 9am on January 6.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.

The Centenary News would like to wish our advertisers, contributors

and readers a Merry Christmas.

Middle Park State School P&C Association has received more than $4,500 funding as part of the Newman Government’s Road Safety Action Plan.

“Road safety should be a top priority for everyone, and the Newman Government is serious about fixing our roads, skilling our drivers and reducing the road toll,” Mount Ommaney MP, Tarnya Smith said.

“Through this program, which is one of 60 action items in our $350 million two-year Road Safety Action Plan, we are getting on with the job.”

Middle Park State School P&C Association will use the $4,530 to installing speed humps for driveways and signage to ensure children and other pedestrians within the grounds are safe around vehicles moving through the school.

A total of 41 projects were successful in receiving $850,954 of Community Road Safety Grant funding.

Some of the winning projects included:• child restraint education and awareness;• school bicycle education programs;• upgrades to school road safety related infrastructure;• driver mentor programs to assist disadvantaged learners

in achieving 100 hours on-road supervised driving;• designated driver programs; • signage for heavy vehicle drivers and tourists to alert

‘Tis the Season to be jolly’ and that’s exactly what our Members do. But first we want to thank ‘Centenary News’ for helping raise people’s awareness of our Seniors’ activities during the year. We wish them and their readers a Merry Christmas and a happy 2014. We also thank our hard-working Committee who are the backbone of our activities.

Our Christmas Lunch is set to be a huge success and our large attendance will enjoy ‘Tim and Maggie’s Baby Boomer Band’ with singing, dancing and a delicious lunch. Our annual Mystery Coach Trip is always a favourite and we thoroughly enjoyed the day - nobody guessed the destination.

Now the best part is yet to come on Tuesday 3rd December at the Jindalee Bowls Club; 9.30am is our General Meeting start time. This is always a special festive day because we have over 30 Christmas hampers packed by our Committee and decorated by Carmel’s creative hands – a picture of colour - to raffle off. Four specially chosen Members will cut the Christmas cakes that we will share at our special morning tea after the Centenary State High School Choir from years 8/9 entertain us with Christmas Carols.

We always look forward to the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Concerts especially this year as they will be held at our rejuvenated City Hall.

Our Steady Steps Exercise classes continue on Mondays until 16th December at 9am at the Middle Park Uniting Church Hall, then we can all take a break until January 13th when we will have to think about weight reduction from Christmas. The Zumba Gold classes, held at the same address at 9.30am on Wednesday will cease on 18th December and also resume in January 2014.

Members playing MahJong at Mt Ommaney Library on the first and second Thursdays each month at 10am will finish in December. They will resume on January 9 at the Mt Ommaney at 9am – 12 noon. For new interested Members, we will teach you how to play.

Our 2014 program of events kicks off again in February with social outings, plays, dinners and concerts as well as the regular programs. We invite you to attend our first General Meeting for 2014 on Tuesday, February 4th at the Jindalee Bowls Club and join in with us on our journey of fun and friendship.

For more information, please call me on 3376 1986. I would love to hear from you.

Wolston House, at Grindle Road, Wacol, will be holding their annual Christmas Craft and Open Day on Sunday, November 24 from 11.00am to 4pm, at a cost of $4 per person.

Browse the craft stalls, check out the sweet treats on the home baked stall, search for treasures on the trash and treasure stalls, enter the raffle for a patchwork quilt and then relax on the lawn under the giant fig tree with a Devonshire tea or sausage sizzle.

Stall holders welcome. Enquiries can be directed to Carolyn 3201 4937 or Barry 3278 8042.

The Kiwanis International Foundation recognised the generosity and contribution made by members Marie and Graham to the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane and has awarded both Graham and Marie Simpson a George F. Hixon fellowship award.

The award is named in honour of the first Kiwanis International President, George F Hixon, who dedicated 50 years of his life in service to Kiwanis. It was fitting for the Brisbane Club members to nominate Marie and Graham for this prestigious award in recognition of their dedicated service to Kiwanis.

Both Marie and Graham of Sinnamon Park have been members of the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane for ten years and have held positions on the board of management. But it has been their dedication in maintaining and resupplying a BBQ trailer over the years which has allowed the club to raise thousands of dollars to give back to charities and the community.

Referred to as Hixon Fellows, they received a commemorative tie tack/lapel pin, two numbered medallions hanging from blue and white ribbons, one encased in a walnut box for display and one to be worn.

Kiwanis Club of Brisbane is a service organisation that has recently celebrated it’s 25th year of service to children and communities locally, nationally and internationally.

From the early years and throughout primary education, quality primary school education provides a rich and focussed curriculum delivered by highly skilled teachers and supported by effective, targeted and informed programs to ensure that every student achieves their best possible outcome.

Our Kindergarten program sees our youngest children already developing their early literacy and numeracy skills while our Preps are taking spelling, reading and pre-algebra in their stride. When learning is fun, presented by skilled, caring staff and tailored to fit each child’s needs, great results are possible.

The fun element is evident in our annual Prep Art Show where our Preps begin by exploring colour, shape, texture, designs and patterns. The Art Show not only enhances each child’s creativity but this activity has a direct link into the innovative mathematics program which won St John’s many accolades. Creativity has been identified by international educational leaders as missing in many schools and yet is a vital skill to enable confidence, problem – solving and team work. Our Preps also look at a range of well-known artist like Monet, Dali, DaVinci, Picasso and Degas. They copy their work for the Art Show with some very interesting modifications!

From Kindergarten to Year Six, St John’s students study Chinese, Speech and Drama, Literature, Music and Physical

Education delivered by highly trained specialist teachers. From Year Three all children play a musical instrument and our inclusive sporting program is producing some outstanding young athletes.

Out of hours care is available for all children. Our Kindergarten program specialist staff also provide before and after school care. This service is now eligible for the Child Care Benefit.

M e m b e r s o f t h e Centenary Evening VIEW Club are already planning f o r C h r i s t m a s . T h e y are decorating boxes of varying shapes and sizes in festive style.

A worthwhi le fund-raiser for this c lub is involvement in the gift-wrapping service offered by the Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre. For a gold coin donation, these ladies wrap customers’ Christmas gifts and add bows and ribbons. Funds raised go to The Smith Family’s Learning for Life Program which provides assistance with educational expenses to Queensland children in need.

Retiring President Helen Brunner says that members are preparing well in advance by decorating hundreds of boxes. Some items bought at Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre are too awkward in shape to be wrapped in the conventional manner and these boxes are the ideal solution.

Customers of Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre are urged to take advantage of this service and be generous with their donations.

Coaching For Life

Most people know the importance of exercise and healthy eating for physical fitness. However, mental fitness gets very little press. Many myths still prevail about mental unwellness, or not coping – that it indicates weakness or worse still, madness; that it’s “deserved” because of something awful the person has done; or that it’s just a “chemical imbalance” and a pill will make it better.

As a society we are not well equipped to build up our mental fitness so that when life delivers tough challenges, we’re ready and able to tackle them.

Just as stretching, cardio and strength training are the foundations for physical fitness, there are also five crucial components of psychological fitness. Each is explained below with one simple exercise you can do to strengthen it.

Mood management refers to the skill of managing your emotions – being able to down-regulate bad moods and up-regulate good moods. Moods have a profound influence on how we cope with life - an anxious mood can cause us to be more prone to worry; an angry mood can cause us to be more easily offended and irritated; a hopeful mood can help us plan more interesting and meaningful activities; a curious mood can help us explore and learn new things. Daily exercise: Download a list of “positive emotions” from the internet, then every day, share a story or write about an experience you’ve had that activated one of the positive emotions on the list.

Positivity mindset refers to the skill of refocusing your thinking towards finding solutions to challenges and staying mentally focused on the important end-goals. Not only are positive thinkers healthier and less stressed, cultivating affirmative thoughts and reducing negative self-talk strengthens your immune system, reduces blood pressure, and helps you sleep better. Daily exercise: Reflect every day on things that went well for you, the things you accomplished, and the delightful moments you’ve experienced.

Personal strengths (also known as “signature strengths”) refer to our own unique set of coping resources or traits that provide the building blocks for many positive outcomes. For example, research shows that using signature strengths in a new way increases happiness and decreases depression for six months or more. Daily exercise: Set yourself the task of actively using at least three signature strengths in a different way every week.

Flourishing relationships are the base for mental and emotional wellbeing. Recent advances in brain research have shown that the way we interact with other people and social experiences are vital for brain development and health functioning, in fact even modifying the expression of our genes. Daily exercise: Write a personal note of gratitude to someone who has contributed to your life in some way this week.

Finding meaning and knowing your life purpose are essential for wellbeing and buffering against psychopathology. Having a sense of what the world is about and why we are here provides the motivation to set personal goals and strive to make our own little piece of the place better. It provides us with a sense of past, present and future, which can be energising. Daily exercise: Reflect on the three most significant contributions you’d like to leave the world, and consider actions you could take this week towards making sure these goals are achieved.

CENTENARY NEWS

Centenary Suburbs Historical Society update by Vice President Lynda Young

During the coming school holidays, how about taking a drive, cycle or walk along 17 Mile Rocks Road, opposite Sinnamon Park Retirement Home, to look at the Historical Precinct of land and buildings originally settled by the Sinnamon family in the 1860s? A description of the area published in The Queenslander newspaper in June 1869 reads:

“The Seventeen-mile Rocks settlement, in the parish of Oxley, contains a rather large agricultural population. It seems, however, to be a sort of out-of-the-world place, as there is no road, no school, and, up to this time, no place of religious worship.”

With a family of 10 children, the Sinnamons built a large slab hut overlooking the Brisbane River before building Beechwood in 1869. Now in bad repair, you can see this house behind wire mesh fencing with the former Seventeen Mile Rocks State School and shelter shed behind. Passing the school, have a look for the plaque just inside the fence. This commemorates the slopes from where Thomas Macleod flew the first bi-plane glider in 1910.

Farther down the road towards Oxley, at number 645, is the now privately owned Avondale, built in 1889, which has been recently renovated, retaining the original exterior. As you pass these buildings on your left, imagine them set in cleared farmland stretching down to the river beyond Windermere Estate. This land was originally scrub filled with wild pigeons, ducks, quail, parrots, wallabies and kangaroos! Heading back to Jindalee you will see, on your right, the sad remains of the once graceful Glen Ross homestead, built in 1887, by James Sinnamon. Bordered by orchards and with a once pretty garden, the house was accidentally burnt down on 14th July 2007. (pictured above in 2005)

The new owners, Jamieson Projects, are proposing to reconstruct the fire-damaged Glen Ross and sell it as a private home. The school building will also be renovated, retaining the original parts of the building without alteration but including extensions to enable it to be sold as a private dwelling. Beechwood will become part of the common property available for use by the community of owners. The new planned townhouses will be set toward the back of the property and green space will front the road together with minimal removal of original trees.

If your interest in local history has been kindled, visit our website for more details and photographs, past and present, of the area you have just explored, www.cshsoc.org.au.

Independent Public SchoolsTwo local schools in the Mount Ommaney Electorate have been successful in applying

to become Independent Public Schools from 54 Queensland state schools named last month to adopt the model.

From next year, Corinda State High School and Middle Park State School will become Independent Public Schools, which will mean that schools will have more freedom to make decisions which will benefit their students.

As independent public schools, Corinda State High School and Middle Park State School will be well-placed to benefit from increased autonomy to deliver the best possible outcomes for their students and this community.

Over time, I have no doubt this will lead to better innovation, stronger partnerships with industry and the community and the tailoring of school programs.

New playground a hit with kidsEarlier this month I opened a new playground Jamboree Heights State School funded by

the Queensland Government through the Gambling and Community Benefit Fund program.

The grant was for $31,818 for the Jamboree Heights State School P&C to upgrade their playground. This is a fantastic grant for the school to upgrade their playground.

The success in securing the funding is certainly a testament to the hard work of the P&C committee and the Principal Mr Cam Wallace.

I trust that many children in the years ahead will take such joy out of what is a fantastic play area for the prep classes

Good Luck Year 12s!With the end of the school year upon us, I would like to take this opportunity to

congratulate all Year 12s on graduating from their final year at school.Graduation from high school marks a new and exciting phase in their life as they take

on the responsibilities and challenges of adulthood. I wish them well.Students and parents can also contact my office to obtain my free “The Next Step –

School Leavers Guide”, a great guide to life post school, to assist with education, work and training options. To obtain your copy contact my office on 3279 5137 or email [email protected].
