Centenary Hospital for Women and Children
The hospital is located on the Canberra Hospital campus and offers a range of
services for women, children and families:
 Children and Youth
 Newborn Care
 Maternity
 Women’s Health
3
Background
The purpose of the project is to:
Meet the projected service demands of the ACT and Southern NSW
 Improve clinical and operational outcomes
 Improve operational efficiencies
Align the CHWC with the Territory-wide Health Services Redesign
Embed a culture of teaching, training and research into the delivery of
clinical services
5
We know current demand is growing
• Over 6,200 babies born in the ACT across multiple settings (public,
private and home-birth)
• In 2018, approximately 65% of public hospital births in the ACT were
at CHWC
• Population growth expected between 2018 and 2039 = 153,800
• Activity data shows significant increase in births over last ten years
• Growing demand for adolescent mental health inpatient services
• Patient needs are more complex due to changing demographics and
higher risk profiles
6
Distributed Model of Care for the ACT
Delivering the right care, in the right place, at the right time by the right people
7
Improved staff and patient outcomes
• New high quality and accessible health services – the project
increases the volume, range and quality of services offers
• Improvements to service delivery – creating a critical mass of
acute and tertiary services to allow health care professionals to
develop and maintain specialist care skills
• Improvements to patient experience – better co-location of more
services leads to better patient experience
• Improved staff training and education – modern teaching, training
and research facilities fully integrated with clinical care
