CEN/TC 287
TC 287: 'Geographic information':
• Standardisation of digital geographic information• Structured framework of standards and guidelines• Specify a methodology to
– define geographic data and services– describe geographic data and services– transfer geographic data and services
• Close co-operation with ISO/TC 211 • Consistent use of geographic information • Support a spatial data infrastructure
CEN/TC 287 general presentation 12
CEN/TC 287
Benefits• underpin common spatial infrastructures required by European
governments;• provide affordable routes to geographic information in an
enlarged European Union;• enable research and development to be carried out on a pan-
European basis;• open up new spatial data resources;• increase availability, usability and understanding of data;• re-use data in multiple applications;• enable interoperability between systems.
CEN/TC 287 general presentation 13
CEN/TC 287
PrioritiesTo facilitate the building of the infrastructure for spatial
information in Europe by:• adopt ISO 19100 series of standards as CEN standards;• developing new standards that underpin INSPIRE
implementing rules;• developing other new standards, specifications and technical
reports;• ensuring interoperability with ISO/TC 211, INSPIRE and OGC;• promoting the use of and education on standards for
geographic information.

EN ISO 19110
Geographic information — Methodology for feature cataloguing
• Provides a standard framework for organizing and reporting the classification of real world phenomena in a set of geographic data.
• A feature catalogue should present the particular abstraction represented in a given dataset clearly, precisely, and in a form readily understandable and accessible to users of the data.
CEN/TC 287 general presentation 20
EN ISO 19115
Geographic information – Metadata• Provide data producers with appropriate information to
characterize their geographic data properly;• Facilitate the organization and management of metadata for
geographic data;• Enable users to apply geographic data in the most efficient
way by knowing its basic characteristics;• Facilitate data discovery, retrieval and reuse. Users will be
better able to locate, access, evaluate, purchase and utilize geographic data;
• Enable users to determine whether geographic data in a holding will be of use to them.

CEN/TR 15449
Standards, specifications, technical reports and guidelines, required to implement Spatial Data Infrastructure
• to identify standards required to implement a SDI in Europe;
• to propose a roadmap for future standards;• to provide recommendations for measures to be
taken in order to support implementation and maintenance of a SDI.
