Cell Theory

Page 2: Cell theory

Robert Hooke

Hook took a look

In 1660’s he observed Cork under a microscope and saw little “cells” that looked liked rooms

He named these compartments “CELLS”

Page 3: Cell theory

Anton von leeuwenhoek

1670’s examined pond water and described living cells

Page 4: Cell theory

Spontaneous Generation

Scientists believed that living things grew from non-living materials such as dust or decaying meat

Page 5: Cell theory

Francesco Redi

First scientist to challenge the theory of Spontaneous Generation

Proved through experimentation that maggots came from flies

Page 6: Cell theory

Maggot Experiment

Page 7: Cell theory

Louis Pasteur

1800’s experiment shows understanding of cell theory and disproves Spontaneous Generation

Swan neck flask experiment proved that life came from life

Pasteurization

Pasteur learned that boiling liquids would kill any bacteria

Used process to keep milk fresher longer

He wondered if “germs” (microscopic organisms he observed) could be the cause

of disease or sickness

His research led to the first vaccines for cholera, anthrax, and rabies

Cell Theory

Every living thing is made of one or more cells

Cells carry out the functions needed to support life

Cells come only from other living cells

Credit for the formulation of this theory is given to German scientists: Theodor Schwann, Matthias Schleiden, and Rudolph Virchow.

Modern Cell Theory

Adds: •Energy flow occurs within cells.•Heredity information (DNA) is passed on from cell to cell.•All cells have the same basic chemical composition.

Why is it not a Law?

“We may find specimen, maybe outside our planet that conflicts with this theory.” Steve Sample
