    Introduction

IntroductionThe Celerra File Server Manager provides a simpler way to enter elerra File Server Manager and Celerra Monitor

many commands and parameters into your Celerra File Server.

The Celerra Monitor lets you observe the performance of a Symmetrix that is attached to a Celerra File Server and of any Data Movers mounted in the Celerra cabinet.

This technical note provides an information about accessing the Celerra File Server, a conceptual overview of the Celerra Monitor, and specifics about installing and using Celerra Monitor.

The installation and operational information provided in this chapter is covered only here and, as appropriate, in the Celerra Monitor online help.

  • Celerra File Server Manager

Celerra File Server ManagerThe Celerra File Server Manager is a graphical user interface that Celerra File Server Manager and Celerra Monitor 3

enables you to perform many Celerra File Server operations. You must have an administrator or operator password to log in to the Celerra File Server Manager.

To use the Celerra File Server Manager, your system must meet the following requirements:

If minimum resolution requirements cannot be met, the browser functions at suboptimal capacity. You can increase the area of the browser window available to Celerra File Server Manager by hiding some of the browser toolbars.

The Celerra File Server Manager provides a simpler way to enter commands and parameters, especially if you are not familiar with the UNIX command style and syntax. The Celerra File Server Manager allows you to select the function you want, and then builds the appropriate Celerra File Server command for you.

Most Celerra File Server commands can be accessed through the Celerra File Server Manager, but some are available only through the command-line interface. Refer to the Celerra Command Reference Manual for details on these commands.

You can access the Celerra File Server Manager from any platform that has HTTP connectivity to the Control Station, using Netscape Navigator 4.5 or Internet Explorer 5.0 as your Internet browser. The Celerra File Server Manager includes easy to use menus, frames and buttons, as well as on-line help.

The Celerra File Server Manager allows you to select the function and parameters you want, and uses the information you enter to build and execute the appropriate Celerra File Server command.

Some commands within the command set also support an EMC network storage application other than the EMC Celerra File Server. Therefore, when viewing the command syntax, you may be presented with options that are not applicable to Celerra File Server use. For clarification, refer to the Celerra File Server Command Reference Manual or the on-line man pages. The manual documents only the Celerra File Server-specific usage of the commands; the on-line man pages include usage notes identifying which options are not used.

Celerra Monitor OverviewYou can use Celerra Monitor to perform the following tasks for the Celerra File Server Manager and Celerra Monitor 7

    Symmetrix and the Data Movers:

Receive online alerts of events posted to the system log View performance View configuration View statistics View logs View summaries of past configurations Control access and polling of monitored data

Celerra Monitor is a Java client/server application that consists of a Java server (poller) that runs on the Control Station and a Java applet (or, in the case of Windows, an application) that runs in your browser.

Celerra Monitor lets you closely monitor and manage specific performance data about the Data Movers in the Celerra cabinet and the attached Symmetrix that provides the data storage capability of the Celerra.

You select the object (Symmetrix or individual Data Mover) you want to monitor from the Object Selection frame in the top-level window of the Celerra Monitor. Figure 2 on page 8 shows an example of the Object Selection window.

Figure 2 Celerra Monitor Object Selection Window

The Windows Opened panel holds the list of windows that this application manages. In the case of many windows, the users can quickly locate a specific window in this list. For example, suppose you have four Symmetrix history graphs. Iconized, they all look alike, but using this list, you can select the one you want by name.

  • Celerra Monitor Overview

Control Window Icons on the left side of the Object Selection window define all the objects in your Celerra. When you select one of these objects, the Commands menu changes accordingly. Celerra File Server Manager and Celerra Monitor 9

If you select a Symmetrix, the top-level window displays Symmetrix monitoring commands.

If you select a Data Mover, the top-level window displays Data Mover monitoring commands.

Two text fields (tickers) at the bottom of the control window continuously display new messages from the system log in a ticker tape fashion.

The Priority field displays high-priority messages (priority 0 through 3).

The second field displays low-priority messages (priority 4 through 7). These messages are sent to all Celerra Monitor users on the system.

For easier reading, you can click and hold the left mouse button to stop the movement of the message. When you release the button, the message ticker resumes. If the message has been displayed for more than 30 minutes, the ticker stops. You can resume displaying messages by clicking the message window.

If the Java server does not start, verify that the node name (as defined in /etc/nodename) and host name (as defined in /etc/hosts) of the Control Station are identical. Normally, the node name and host name are created at installation and should be identical. If they are not, edit /etc/nodename and change the node name to the same value as the host name in /etc/hosts.

ra Monitor p Window ins Blank

If the Celerra Monitor window is blank when you start it, one of the following conditions may exist:

Incorrect installation review your installation to ensure it complies with the requirements in Installing Celerra Monitor on page 1-12.

A necessary piece of software is not running. Typically, in this case, the screen appears and remains blank. To diagnose this condition, verify that Java, agent and macstat are running by entering the commands:

ps -ef | grep javaps -ef | grep agentps -ef | grep macstat

If a problem exists, a message in the Java console reports an I/O exception, with a comment that the server may be down or temporarily unavailable.

If your installation meets these guidelines and the problem persists, contact EMC Customer Service.

    ntifying Users tonhance Trouble-

    shooting

You can help to identify Netscape users and enhance your ability to troubleshoot Celerra Monitor issues by ensuring each Celerra Monitor user has set up identity information in Navigator.

    1. Select Preferences... from the Navigator Edit menu.

    2. Click the plus (+) next to Mail and Newsgroups to expand the Category.

    3. Click Identity.

    4. In the Identity category, enter your name in the Your name: field.

    5. Type your e-mail address in the Email address: field.

    6. Click OK.

Once users have set up the identity information, the Control Station administrator can determine which users may have made specific changes or encountered errors. You can find the error information by logging in as root and accessing the following files:

    /nas/jserver/logs/error_log./nas/jserver/logs/sys_log.

    Java Server Trouble-shooting

If you encounter problems launching Celerra Monitor, the Java server may not have launched properly. To manually launch the Java server, log in as root and enter the following command:

    SavinAmou

For MInform Celerra File Server Manager and Celerra Monitor 31

    # nas/sbin/run_jserver &

If the server fails to start, debug messages appear on the screen, and additional debug messages are recorded in the log.

If the Java server is hung or needs to be restarted, shut it down gracefully by entering the command:

    /nas/sbin/js_shutdown

If this does not work, you can get rid of all associated processes by using the script:

    /nas/sbin/js_kill

Using the js_kill script may cause the loss of up to 20 minutes of recorded statistics or the loss of changes done to the parameters of the Java server during the previous 20 minutes, but in general, it does not cause serious problems.

    g Large nts of Data

If you intend to save a large amount of Celerra Monitor data, move the Celerra Monitor data directory, /nas/jserver/sdb, to another file system and create a softlink to it from /nas/jserver. To create this softlink, use the following procedure:

    1. Start Celerra Monitor.

    2. In UNIX, create the new /sdb directory in the other file system.

    3. Move (mv) the contents of /nas/jserver/sdb to the new /sdb directory.

    4. Create a softlink in /nas/jserver to the new directory and shut down the Java server. It will be restarted automatically by the mcd daemon.
