Faces January 4–27, 2019Opening Reception Friday, January 4, 7–9pm

Portraits show the life a person has lived, the joy a person emanates, the wisdom gained through years of living, and focuses on the soul of the person. This exhibit is for the fresh face of a two-year old toddler or the lived-in face ofan octogenarian, and all living in between. Full length portraits are encouraged, but thisexhibit centers on faces, however the artist portrays them, whether realistic, impression-istic, surreal, or abstract. Bodies in motion, thoughtful faces, eyes as the mirror of the soul are all part of the portrait.

Faces runs from January 4-27 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center, 2704 Mt. Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia 22301. Gallery hours are Thursdays 12–6pm, Fridays 12–9pm, Saturdays 12–9pm, and Sundays 12–6pm. For the Artist March 1–31, 2019

The March show For the Artist will feature works that the artist has always wanted to create.

Make that piece that has been bugging you, calling to you, and has been on your New Year's resolution list several years running.

Although this can be considered an open show, we challenge participants to reach into that wish list and cre-ate the special piece they've always dreamed about doing. Two and three-dimensional works and photography will be accepted.

Reduce, reuse, recycle! The EPA estimates that75% of the American waste stream is recyclable. We only recycle about 30% of it.

Some people are being more conscientious about recycling, and also about reusing. Sellers have taken to eBay and Craig's List foryears, but now many are using give-awaysites like Freecycle.org and BuyNothing. This exhibit focuses on using recycled materialsto make original artwork.

Artwork submitted to this exhibit should contain at least half recycled materials. Recycled materials may be found objects, unusual items, even recycling some of your older art pieces. Exhibit is open to all area artists.

A Card Party! Sunday, January 20, 3–7pm

Come to the gallery to gather around our crafting tables and create greeting cards you would never find anywhere else. Each card becomes its own work of art as participants “treasure hunt” through papers, images, supplies, and ephemera for embellishing. You have the option to donate the cards made to DRA or make a small monetary contribution for time and supplies. No experience necessary. Timely 2019 wall calendars are here! Each month features 4-5 pieces of artwork done by Del Ray Artisans members. The wall calen-dar comes pre-printed with Del Ray Artisans events, community events, national holidays, and major religious holidays.

Upcoming WorkshopsArt of Business WorkshopSaturday, January 12, 10am–12pmThe Art of Business workshop will answer your questions on income, sales, and local Virginia county taxes. In a lecture and discussion format, Rita Schooley, CPA, will go over the general points of tax law and then answer questions. We will also discuss general aspects of business from an artist’s viewpoint. We cover recordkeeping, record retention, filing tax returns, estimated tax payments, and navigating the tax maze. Participants can bring all tax- and business-related questions for consideration. Needle Felted JewelrySaturday, January 12, 1–4pmBrittany Gabel will teach you the basics of how to create 3D Needle Felted Jewelry, as well as basic jewelry techniques. Creative Revival – 12 Weeks to Nurture & Unblock Your Creativity, starts Saturday, January 26, 2–4pmCreative Revival Artist’s Way Circle, a group facilitated by artist and curator Sharon Burton, will meet once a week for 12 weeks as we go through The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. Together, we will share our journey into finding the creative muse. Each week we will meet to discuss a chapter of the book, our daily journaling practice, weekly Artist’s Dates that you select to in-spire yourself and other insights that you wish to share on this special journey. Each participant receives The Artist’s Way book and journal for the program, as well as access to a Facebook group and a group of other artists and creatives moving through the journey with you. Member Meeting & Art Supplies SwapSunday, February 17, 2019, 4–6pm

If you haven’t already, check your studios, basements, closets, attics – wherever you have stashed those old art supplies that you really thought you would use, and bite the bullet… if you haven’t used them yet – give someone else a chance. Maybe you will find a new project waiting for you.

Our winter All Member Meeting is DRA’s traditional opportunity for members to swap unused art supplies for “new to you” supplies from fellow members. Always popular at DRA, this swap is a great opportunity to chat about making art.

Please bring your old supplies with you to the meeting. We will collect and display them. Light refreshments will be served as we learn about the latest DRA news, and view the supplies. Urban SketchbookingSunday, January 13, 2–4pm

Urban Sketchbooking conveys a sense of place or a moment in time through drawings com-pleted from direct observations. These are drop-inmeetings on the second Sunday of each month.No need to register in advance.
