May 6, 2013 Celebrating National Nurses and Health Care Professionals Week It doesn’t take an extraordinary experience for our nurses and other dedicated employees at St. Joseph Health to make health care feel like an extraordinary blessing. You understand that even the smallest, most ordinary moments are sacred. Whether you provide administrative services or welcome new life into the world, your everyday work is central to fostering health and instilling hope in our communities. Thank you for supporting meaningful care through your hard work. Read what inspired some of our SJH family to work in health care: “I knew I wanted to be in health care when I had a great health teacher in the eighth grade. I was hooked on anatomy and physiology. In high school, I volunteered as a candy striper at a nursing home. I loved talking with all the patients and hearing their stories. I was sure that I wanted to be a nurse. My days as a bedside nurse still remain among my best days in my career.” Deborah Proctor, president and CEO, SJH “Once upon a time, in 2007, the mortgage industry was gone and my job was gone too. Then, I got a county government job, later followed a friend into health care and eventually followed my two bosses to St. Joseph Health. I found a wonderful and positive place to work. I lived happily ever after. The end.” Scott Flanders, technical writer, revenue cycle services, SJH “When my mom was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a serious brain cancer, my perspective on life changed. I was her sole caregiver, never wanting a moment to pass without her in my sight. My experience with her illness and passing helped me find my purpose. I enrolled in nursing school and found my calling. Being in health care is noble – it is a field that encompasses compassion, service and humanity.” Sally Marquez, R.N., P.H.N., M.S.N, hospice admission manager, SJH “When I was 16, I applied for a job at a local nursing home. I got the job and quickly learned I loved working with the elderly. My heart would open each time I helped someone dress up for family visits or held a hand during someone’s last moments of life. The nursing director at the home encouraged me to go to nursing school – I thank her for that every day!” Ann Kaiser, L.V.N, C.M., authorized licensed vocational nurse, SJH Home Health Network “I was a bookkeeper at a supermarket for 15 years and I wasn’t getting anywhere. So I wanted to try something completely out of my realm. I have always been intrigued with the medical field. After working several years in a company doing workers compensation, I applied to St. Joseph Health and I could not be happier. I really love my job and hope to continually make a difference. This is the best company I have worked for – I am truly blessed!” Frances Pharis, technical denial consultant, revenue cycle services, SJH Click here to read their complete stories, and look for more in next week’s Huddle newsletter.
